I didn't realize there was a Starbound thread over here!  Guess I should do the necessary shameless promoting...

If you like DF and Starbound maybe you'll like the Kobold Mod!  Good for all of your kobold in Starbound needs.  Hopefully.

CaptainKobold, out.

You know what is REALLY freaking cool to me?  Stumbling upon this while browsing the web.  Mind if I link to your LP from the mod page?

Depending upon what version you have, there are likely some improvements that have come through!  One of them is that there is now a sacred dark altar that you can sacrifice bars at to get animal spirits.  There's not a ton implemented with that yet, but it does allow you to get an awesome wolf sword that counts as a hunting weapon.

Let me know if I can post your LP and I'll link you up!  Also, feel free to ask if you have any questions/requests!

I believe that Splinter should still be able to wield a weapon and fight!  On the other hand, if you'd like to withdraw him from the military let me know.

34
Yeah, I recognized the danger of fighting on those stairs, but also knew that those drakes could wreck havoc up in the camp.  Luckily, there are other available kobolds for the taking if you'd like to be re-bolded!

As Winter’s grasp began to tighten around the kobolds at first it nearly seemed a blessing.  There was quite a bit of work to be done and though there were plenty of paws the clay for the walls was still heavy.  Under Zata’s careful eye the outside wall of clay was built first to provide a single entrance to the camp, all the better for it to be guarded by the iron plated “doggy” chained inside.  At the same time Maverick worked with military consultation (and insinuating flirtation) from Kalras to make a fortified wood wall near the clay barrier.  The Death Passage certainly wasn’t impressive, but it would at least make charging into the camp a little bit more difficult.

“Need spiders,” pointed out Mephistophelia as she played a game of catch with the Iron Doggy.

“Shiny Cog,” called out Tin as he surveyed the work being done from on top of one of the living huts.  “Shiny Cog smart?”

Shiny Cog looked up from her current project of hammering together several bones with a curious look on her face.  “Smart?  Shiny Cog count.  Count paws.”  She held up both of her bone-dust covered paws in demonstration of this.

“Good,” responded Tin with a serious look on his face.  “Put statue, then count.”  So it was that Shiny Cog became the Hoardcounter of Ebentijenta with a bone statue to commemorate her raising.  It didn’t really look that much like her and honestly didn’t show the whole ‘raising to hoardcounter’ very well, but it certainly did add to the glamour of the dining hall.

Although the food supplies were still good there was talk among the kobolds that with the camp’s increasingly fast growth it could be good to have more meat available.  Besides, more bones were going to be needed to arm the incoming group of kobold fighters!  The Menacing Rabbles and the Wanderers of Heaven took up their arms and went off in search of Adventure.  Splinter found the drake first, a massive grey beast with a hissing tongue.  He did what any kobold would do in that moment.  He charged it alone with a cry of battle.  Swinging time and again with his pointy stick, he couldn’t seem to pierce the drake’s scales.  Then he reached too far forward and the monster’s claws found his leg and his hand.  With a cry of pain, he stumbled back dropping his stick.

Seeing Splinter collapse onto the ground, holding his paws above his face to protect himself, Kalras, Anald and Deepblue shouted out to him and charged forward.  The drake hissed in surprised and turned on them leaving Splinter time to scurry away.  “Die dragon,” snarled DeepBlue as she began stabbing and pushing it back into Kalras’ ready stabbing.  The three warrior women stabbed, chunks of scale ripping off and blood spurting until the beast was down.  At the last, Anald crushed it’s skull and the three went off to celebrate.

Splinter was not in so much of a celebrating mood.  Nursing his hand he wandered back to camp letting out small whimpers of pain as he went.

Before GatorFace could even kiss Splinter’s hand better, there came a cry of terrible fear.  A beast so terrible and horrifying that it sent shivers of fear through even the bravest of kobolds.  A monster from hells so deep that no loving kobold parent would let it’s pups know of it’s existence.  And it had found Maverick.

A GINGERBREAD WOMAN.

Maverick took up his spear and let out a primal shout of anger and rage, summoning everything it was to be ‘bold.  The Gingerbread woman’s mouth quirked upwards the chocolate chips forming a sneer before she backed away into the wilderness growling out, “I will return for you, Maverick of the Wrung Claws.  I will devour your soul.”

With the military all set to attack, there was a moment of calm.  The kobolds panted out heavy breaths as they stood waiting.  Then a terrible hissing came to their ears.  Two drakes that had previously been assumed to be stuck at the bottom of the river had began to climb up toward the camp.  Alone Kalras descended the stairs to fight it, stabbing again and again, ripping through it’s scales with her pointy stick and shouting defiance to the monster before her.  It bled and raged, screaming as it charged at her and for a moment, she stumbled on the edge of the stairs.  Her claws reached out to try to grasp for a friendly hand, the drake, anything to stop her.  Then she fell.

The Dread Drake Voicekisses snarled and let out it’s signature hiss of terror.  “NOOOOO,” cried DeepBlue as she hurtled down the stairs with her spear ready, stabbing again and again into Voicekisses.  Anald and Splinter were soon behind her, but neither could match the fierceness of her strikes.  She cut into it’s side, stomach, back, and finally with a harsh flick of her wrist took it’s head from it’s body.  “Die, DIE!” she snarled out as she stabbed the corpse over and over again, until Splinter and Anald had to pull her from the body.

When the three came up to the camp, Maverick, unbeknownst widower of Kalras, saw the tears on DeepBlue’s face and asked, “DeepBlue?  Why cry?”

“Kalras,” she responded and Maverick’s eyes went dead.

The kobolds held a service that night to say goodbye to Kalras.

“Kalras bravest,” sermonized Maverick as the slab for his wife was placed before the statue Kalras had carved earlier that year of her god Shinto Spraysnaked, “Kalras carve good.  Kalras good hunter.”  The other kobolds nodded and the slab was put into place to honor the first fallen warrior of the kobolds.

Not exactly the happiest way to return to Ebentijenta.  Kalras will truly be missed.

Hey kobolds!  Sorry for my long absence there!  Had a couple of crazy weeks, but Winter should be posted today!  I'm working my way through it right now!

So in a sense, Splint was right, but I AM back now!

@GatorFace, That is a freaking awesome image.

37
@Meph, Oooh, that's brilliant.  I'm totally going to have to do some of that!  Bags of Loot also sound potentially very useful.  I imagine that anything with random odds and ends can be useful!

Truly fortune does favor the bold.  Indeed, I'll go ahead and say as a blanket statement that if you want your kobold to go on a thieving mission to let me know.  There is significant chance of death as I understand it, but it can lead to some very nice gains as well.  Hopefully it won't kill our entire civilization ;)

38
Ah well, CaptainKobold died the way he lived.  Tumbling backwards.

39
I'm not completely sure about that!  I'm pretty certain that trap spiders weave webs which people can be caught in.  I'd imagine that the trick would be to pen them in an area you want to fill with webs for a while, though needless to say that could make it awkward for kobolds to get in if it was the entrance to your camp.

If it weren't this week, I'd consider it but I'm rather enmeshed in quite a few RL responsibilities and Ebentijenta over in the other thread.  If there isn't anybody to take a turn after the... 16th I could give it a shot?

41
Actually, at some point I'm going to be building an awesome new building that lets you send a kobold off to try to steal things.  It's a VERY high risk endeavor, but it can also lead to some wonderful rewards.  As I see it, it's the perfect way for a wounded-to-uselessness kobold to prove their worth one last time...

42
Ooo!  Could I be bolded as a male ranged-combat kobold?

43
Well, there is a currently running Kobold Camp Succession Game that looks as though it could use some more overlords! (Yay cross promotion!)  I'd go in myself, but I'm terrified of doing succession stuff.  I really encourage you to try out Masterwork for Kobold Camp.  It's played very polished thus far (despite Meph's insistence that it isn't) and has lots of very fun, cool features I'm looking forward to trying out more stuff with.

I'm not 100% certain what hostile kobolds would be.  It didn't even occur to me to look at their description when they were over here.  I believe that they are a different RAW creature, so they likely have differences from OUR kobolds, but they may be approximately the same species!

My goal currently is a little bit simplistic but has been a bit slow going.  I want to get the camp to the point that it is secure from external threats.  As I see it, that has three main requirements.

1) Military Might: Out of 18 kobolds in the camp, 7 are in the military and armed in some way.  This number will likely go up as I'm probably going to assign some of these migrant kobolds to the military as well.  The kobolds have been impressing me very much.  Taking down a giant badger is an activity I've seen kill more than a single kobold and they did it without any loses.  However, they still are not fully armored and ranged-bolds are currently using wood ammo.  Apparently you can make earthenware ammo of some kind which is an immediate short-term goal, but overall I think military is going quite well.

2) Defenses: We are situated on a plateau which is always a wonderful thing.  There is relatively little space to work with right around the plateau, but I'm working on getting some walls up that our archers can shoot through.  Additionally we now have a guard dog tied up by the entrance.  We still need some traps but those will be started ASAP.

3) Sustainable food: We have semi-sustainable food.  I'm not 100% positive the well is working, but we have one well.  Probably not enough to deal with the thirst of the entire camp.  Additionally, we have some brewed drinks, but not nearly enough to sustain us should we be blocked in.  I'm trying to work out a way to get a farm going given the need for soil.

Beyond those goals, there's going to be need for expansion soon.  The plateau is hardly big enough to hold the entire camp as it is, so we'll likely end up using that eventually as a fall-back and supply point with a larger village further out.  Surviving the winter shouldn't be too much of a problem unless we get hit by some kind of an assault.  An assault would be a very, very big problem, especially if they have ranged attackers.

Yeah, I'm really not sure what happened this past season (and a bit into the Winter season).  I just totally forgot that pictures were a thing to be doing!  But we now have MORE kobolds!
