If the Magma is spawning down there you are just going to need to create a catchment system that feeds into a massive chamber from which you can then deploy your magma reserves as needed.

Walls, a solid wall around your wagon, and dig straight down into the dirt (and pray the badgers don't learn to dig.... wait until NPC's dig also!)

Also while undead may not need to breath, elves do, and even undead are subject to the lays of physics when you push them off a bridge with water into spikes!

My latest fort.


Day 1.   Strike the Earth, Erect the wall.
Day 2.   Build a bridge that goes to a ramp, when bridge is retracted there is no way out of the fort, entirely walled.  This will keep us safe from Skeletons.
Year 1.  Struggling along with a small population, barely keeping up with food, no real trade going yet, trying to get smelters going, though perfect Hematite/Limonite/Lignite/Coal/Limestone/Marble layers below us.
Migrant Wave 3..... OMG!  They just keep coming!  We are doomed!

And.... that's as far as I've got.  I just had one of those epic migrant waves turn up and completely change the dynamics of the fort.
Several zombie incursions have been beaten back by Marksmen firing from the 2nd level of fortifications on the tower.  But no serious attacks yet.

Have a killing chamber in the bottom, make a massive bloody pool and operate a pump stack making rivers of blood run down it's side, back into the pool, and repeat until everything is blood covered?

Given the problems surrounding automated cleaning, it would seem a much more elegant solution to have it manually designated and treated like any other designated job at that point.

This comes from a couple of Dwarf Mode threads discussing Embarks melting/thawing unexpectedly.


What I propose is that on Embark you can bring up a more detailed Biome screen (current overview remains unchanged, additional screen available).
On this screen you get things such as average time a tree/shrub takes to grow.
Average rainfall by season
Max/Min/Average temperature by season.
Evaporation (if it happens) by season.

This will allow people who want to deal with things like rivers thawing & freezing to select their embarks a lot better, as well as give you a slightly better idea of how climate works in your embark zone.  As well as if it is hot/cold enough to cause actual damage, & so forth.  Rather than the current very vague & often misleading systems.

If it freezes in winter, I would channel out the brook under the dam and install flood gates to block it, then you can close the floodgates once your dam is finished, and use the brook itself to fill the dam.

If you regularly check the health screen Thirsty & Hungry show up as do Starving etc.  So it's there, you just have to use the screen.
