It looks like the people has spoken!

The winner is GFXiNXS's Dark bload-soaked Volcano Vista!

Second place goes to xobl1v10nx's Magma Disk!

Third place is taken by Djohaal's Gold spiked sphere!

Woot!  8)

I'm going to setup Obsidian so that it loads one of these four logo's (GFXiNXS' logo has two versions - with and without the stone) randomly during startup, weighted by the number of votes received by each.

So, the winning artists can make final tweaks to their designs before I add them to Obsidian. Please don't change it radically, though - cleanup work, resizing and signing will be fine.

We need to aim for a good splash screen size. I can crop and resize xobl1v10nx's disk to a nice 700x700. Djohaal, would you be able to re-render at that size and aspect ratio without losing too much detail?

GFXiNXS, I'm going to use your full-size with-stone logo as the official logo on the wiki etc. May I resample both versions at 640x150 for use as splash screens? Or would you prefer to provide smaller splash versions yourself?

Progress Report

I've gotten the Cell engine (the part of Obsidian that loads, saves and manipulates the data from DF) basically working. I can now load and save XML files that uses a version-independent format to store fortress data. This will mean you can upload a compressed Obsidian save file with your favorite mega project, and then anyone on any platform can download and view/render it using almost any version of Obsidian*. You no longer need to have to get the exact version of DF, load up the fortress and then attach to it with a visualizer that supports that specific version of DF.

It still needs to be polished a bit before I can release, but it works!

After polishing I'll start on the Visual Fortress geometry module. It will use VF's geometry generator as-is to construct the renderable geometry. Once that module is done I'll try and release a stable version of Obsidian so that others can write exporter modules for offline rendering (using 3DSMax or Povray or Blender or what have you).

* Big version differences in the Cell engine will need to use XSLT stylesheets to internally upgrade/downgrade the format, but that should happen automagically behind the scenes.

I've been doing that for a while now :)

Most of my personal projects have an exception called Vloermoer, which is a colloquial Afrikaans word for tantrum that is fun to say. It literally means to beat up the floor. I usually throw that one whenever there is an error caused by the user doing something stupid.

Thanks Daenyth, that would be awesome. I'm an archlinux fan myself, and plan to install it on my laptop again soon. I'll need it for testing the Obsidian Linux build.

I'll let you know when it is up on github.

Right, so I've uploaded what I've got so far for definition files: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Cell_definition_files

Let's use the discussion page to figure out what needs to go in there :)

Any kind of a way I could get started on coding a module to export the terrain as a DF Designer map?
For instance, have you sorted out an interface yet for modules?  (Or better still, is the Obsidian source on a public repo?)

It's just that 'terrain import' is, like, my top requested feature.

Alas, Obsidian source is not yet in a public repo. I have to sort out a few things before I can do that.

As to the module interfaces, there is no set interface. An Obsidian module is nothing more than a Lua module/package, either written in pure Lua, a Lua shared library or a mixture of the two.

The only real interfaces will be with the rendering engine (which I still need to design) and the internal Cell engine - which I'm working on right now. The Cell engine will represent a fortress as a collection of C++ objects, exposed through Lua. It will start with an xml and binary serializer, but you are more than welcome to write a Lua module that will export to a DF Designer map.

I still need to nail down the internal representation of a fortress - it will directly affect the interface and available operations. I'll create a wiki page with the latest version of the representation and where we can discuss what info needs to be in it.

I haven't yet looked into the internals of DF, i.e. how terrain is represented, etc., so any input from anyone who has done that before will be MUCH appreciated.

I feel the same way with including just one logo with a lower weight if doing random logo's - people will bet used to seeing the top few, and then all of a sudden *pop* woah, what is that?

Graaaargh! Too many good logos!

I definitely agree James - each new entry was a more awesome surprise after the others.

<musing>
Just from a professional developer's perspective - a glimpse of the final look and feel for a project really makes a difference in motivation.

The hardest part in starting a new project is to get past the motivational slump that follows the initial rush of "let's try this". Its when the grand idea meets the practicality and the scope of the work required becomes clear.

Most of my side-projects usually peter out around that point, and Obsidian was in danger of that. I had big troubles with the Lua binding generator this week, the basis for all of the other functionality.

But I have to say that seeing these logo's allowed me to power through. Last night I finally cracked it, and now have 80% of DFHack available in Obsidian (I can access materials, creatures and items from DF now :) )

The rest of the project will go easier from this point on, methinks.

Therefore I would like to especially thank Djohaal for his render (got me through the OpenSceneGraph cluster$%$) and GFXiNXS for his volcano logo (it helped me slay the Lua binding generator dragon).

So, yeah, I'm thinking I'll have to add an inspiration section to the credits  8)
</musing>

Next up it will be up to the model artists and render guru's to provide the inspiration! (I'm a visual person, okay?)

GFXiNXS, there were multiple requests for a version without the stone and I'm thinking the time zone differential isn't that great in your case, so you've got a few more hours to finish that version and I'll add it to the poll.

I'm thinking adding the stone-less version to the poll now will only dilute the results, so unless anyone objects (or another logo becomes the winner) I will use whichever version GFXiNXS prefers (stone or no-stone).

If we go the random logo route - should I include both versions then?

Modify thread title by changing subject of first post.

Well, that's intuitive (sic).

I'm going to leave the poll open till Monday evening (PST), see how things look then.

Even though the current trend seems to favour GFXiNXS's excellent volcano/blood logo, there are others that also stand out (xobl1v10nx's magma disk, djohaal's rendered orb, etc).

The amount of work that went into these entries are considerable, and I'd hate to not use such lovingly crafted examples of craftdwarfship.

What about following DF's example of a random title? It creates a different title each time you load it, by randomly picking the last two words from a list of synonyms.

I'm thinking Obsidian can do the same. We take the top X (I'm thinking three) logo's and Obsidian randomly picks one each time it starts up. It would be a weighted random pick, i.e. the number of votes received by each of the logo's would determine how often it gets picked, relative to the others.

This will of course be an init option so that you can select your favorite logo to display all the time... and only the winning logo will be the official one for online/publication purposes.

What do ya think?

How do I modify the thread title?

How do I change the poll to allow vote changes?

26
Mosey on over to this thread http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=57923.0 and vote for the Obsidian logo.

Poll's up. Vote away!

Let me know if I left anyone out by mistake or added the wrong submission.

The poll will run until we get a clear winner, or there looks to be a very close margin between a few top entries (and I have an idea for that).

GFXiNXS, there were multiple requests for a version without the stone and I'm thinking the time zone differential isn't that great in your case, so you've got a few more hours to finish that version and I'll add it to the poll.

This is a one-vote, no change poll, so if you like GFXiNXS's work, wait a bit for his last entry before voting.

This is SOOO damn exciting. I am really curious who is going to win!

Righto, competition closed. Let me compile the entries and set up the poll.

So far I have found entries for:
Sizik
Bloogonis
ITnetlolor
Rotten
Djohaal (2)
soundandfury
bmaczero
Adamantine Fist (2)
xobl1v10nx
GFXiNXS (2)
BManx2000

I took the last image submitted for the cases where the poster did not indicate which submission is final.

Alas, farmerbob, I'm not sure if your picture was a submission or not, but if it was I must decline and say 'original art' only. Copyright reasons, amongst other things.

I'm going to add the poll to this thread, unless people think it needs its own thread?

Woohoo - the competition heats up!

This thread is so cool that evaporated awesome condenses on it. :P

This competition is really inspiring, by the way. I'd better make sure Obsidian is good enough to deserve such a logo!

I'm actually at this very moment whispering sweet nothings in the ear of the Lua binding generator, trying to get it to do what I want it to do without complaining. But unless it gets its act together in the next few hours, I'm afraid I'll have to go and fetch the aluminium baseball bat (encircled with bands of duck tape and menacing with spikes of roofing nails)... Carrot and stick, you know, carrot and stick...   ;)

Just a reminder:

Deadline for submitting logo entries is this Friday, 12pm Pacific Standard Time

At that time I will collect all entries marked as FINAL, post them to the wiki and open a voting poll thread.
Each competitor can enter as many logo's as they want, as long as they keep it the number reasonable. Stylistic variations on their main entry is also welcome.

Just to make it official - Janus' icon is now in Obsidian. I just really liked it :)

It had that Quake II feel about it...
