DF Announcements / Re: Dwarf Fortress 0.31.06 Released
« on: June 09, 2010, 11:02:27 pm »
I just had to post here to say that playing DF in my android phone via ssh into my linux machine is pretty damn sweet, even if I cannot actually play properly due to keyboard mapping issues with connectbot, the geek factor alone has me ecstatic  ;D.

You have made the geek in me proud.. BTW.. What issues are you having with connectbot? Have you tried remapping from the android? Even if the keys are coming across totally borked.. at least they should be consistent!!

I'd grab the default .ini(s) from this thread and try loading up with them.. see what happens. Might help you narrow it down at least. Even throw the default DF on your desktop, and run it from there, see if you have sound then.

Now works to 31.05. You should also check out Stonesense, a visualizer that'll help you get an idea of what your fortress looks like, though you'll likely use it less and less as time goes by, and as you begin to be able to visualize it yourself.

Actually, I was able to get it working, somewhat, with memory.xml from the updated DFHack. Shows me my terrain, and built structures, but no dwarves.

Wow, seriously folks! Do we need to resort to petty dirt slinging? Amazing how disagreeing with someone will PISS THEM OFF! It's not like he's saying the guy is a jerkoff who doesn't deserve any praise, in fact he's stated exactly the opposite of that. He's only saying that he doesn't have the EXACTING QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED TO FIT A CATEGORY IN A GAME!

DF General Discussion / Re: Elves are such hypocrites.

Interestingly enough, I have also found some documents on some elves who weren't able to make it out of my trade depot when a siege occurred. The got locked in, and due to the length of time the siege lasted, went... er.... a bit off. I'm sure it was either the lack of sky, or the lack of trees.. (Though it could have been the giant pile of cut wood they wandered into... Not sure) After dealing with (read: violently attacking) the problem, we discovered some papers that were much like those found at Imp's fortress. These, however, were more intact, primarily due to our Axe Dwarves having had their training axes equipped at the time. (The corpses were.... squishy.. I will not burden you with any more imagery than that..) Ours were basically the same information already relaid to the Council here, though with more detail on the two noted points. HOWEVER! One of our brethren happens to be a Legendary +5 cryptographer, and he thought it unusual that such a simple message covered over 20 pages.. When he requested funding to preform some research on them, it was, of course, granted.

After nearly three seasons, locked in his rooms and accepting nothing more than water (of all things) and wine biscuits, he finally emerged, tattered and on the brink of tantrum, clutching some crumpled scrolls in one hand, and the partially masticated remains of a kitten in the other. Only to promptly collapse. He's recovering in our hospital ward as I write this, and should the unthinkable happen, we have a very nice crypt selected for him. (It has some beautiful obsidian workings along the floors, and a very nice silver coffin that menaces with spikes of cat bone. On it is an image of a Dwarf, and Dwarves. The Dwarf is showing the Dwarves some important documents. This relates to when Urist McScribbleScript decoded the Elven Conspiracy)

More importantly is the content of the scrolls:

PROPAGANDA DISPATCHED STOP DWARVES SLASH HUMANS UNAWARE STOP PEASANT POPULATION ACCEPTING RELIGIOUS MALARKEY STOP MONOPOLIZATION OF TIMBER HAS PROCEEDED AS EXPECTED STOP HOW ARE WIFE AND KIDS QUERY END

Suffice to say, our trade depot now comes equipped with some 'Magma Features.'

I have included some 'Dwarven Decoder Rings,' and instructions on their use, with this message. We must be vigilant my comrads! We can't let the Pansies prevail!

For those having issues with a black/blank screen when using partial print, try PARTIAL:0, instead of PARTIAL:1/2/whatever. Seems to work for me, though I had terrible screen tearing or blinking issues with previous versions when using that settings. If you DO have tearing/blinking, try using the VSYNC setting. I'm getting roughly twice the FPS with this new version and PARTIAL:0. That's roughly 20gfps and less than (10cps) up to 30-40gfps and (20cps) where gfps == graphical frames per second, and (cps) == cycles per second, or 'the one in brackets.'

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarves Need This Tool

Ok, gotta chime in here, 'cause I actually had one almost 20 years ago, in Scouts. Granted, I never used mine as an oar, and it didn't have the bottle opener/saw/wire-cutters. It was just the folding shovel head and a handle. But I did put an edge on it to cut through dead wood for the fire pit. Was light-weight, portable, easy to use (it's a small shovel, so it seems like it'd be a pain to dig with, but it's actually really easy, 'cause you can 'pick' the area first to break it up, and also to cut sod) and handy as hell. The folding head alone is so useful it becomes more than the sum of it's parts.

BTW.. the edge kept for a long time, even with regular use as most of the impact of digging is along the bottom edge of the shovel, not the side.

If you know the right people, and can get stuff at cost/below cost. You could easily build that system for half that price!

Well, in that case, I couldn't agree more. It IS very difficult to predict. Though, in this case, having to do with computers, I would say that it a matter of overestimating the time it will take, rather than underestimation. I believe this because I have see so many old adds/studies/news articles that mention that we may be able to fit a computer into a living room by the Year 2000! Nearly every prediction we make becomes truth YEARS before we predicted.

Reading the posts about Neurogrid and memristors (and a few research papers I was able to dig up (cause I roll like that)) really helps to punch home my point. 1 million neurons at 1 watt? friggin amazing! and add in the ability to make a ram stick that's (forgive any sloppy math) 640nm in size? Yes plz!

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, because technically, what you're saying is more or less true (although the 6000 ft2, $100 million supercomputers aren't being used for AI work, but rather various simulations; AI research is done on high-end consumer grade equipment, from what I've heard).

It's a tongue in cheek, funny-because-it's-true kind of sarcasm. And http://www.engineeringservicesoutsourcing.com/b/fe/2008/03/can-supercomputer-think-like-brain.html Technically a 'Supercomputer,' though not the office building scale type.

Remember like, in the 1970's everyone was sure we would be a space-faring race by the 2000's. Its 2010 now :P .

Erm... We actually... ARE... You know... A space faring race... Already... ;D Have been since the '60s. We also have flying cars, and fully automated kitchens. Robots that serve us. And researching on AI isn't grinding to a halt, even though our closest attempts so far ARE the size of office buildings AND cost the same as the gross national output of several small countries.

Just because everyone doesn't have access to these things, doesn't mean the engineers weren't right, they just aren't sociologists. Or economists. Ya know... 'cause they are Engineers...
