DF Suggestions / Re: if gods can curse now, will there be blessing?
« on: June 10, 2011, 04:34:50 pm »
One problem is that it makes the game too much of a Nethack clone.
No, Nethack is impossible for 1, and 2, there's no structure for dieties in nethack to bestow blessings/curses upon psuedo-political interactions in a randomly generated landscape (besides a dungeon).

Also, the two aren't clones, they have some similarities, but they're totally different games. You're thinking of adv. mode.

Hmmm, if we had a hag in DF, we'd need an evil eye syndrome. =O

DF Suggestions / Re: Wen...di...go....
« on: June 10, 2011, 04:23:36 pm »
I remember reading a wendigo myth as a child. In this variation, it was a creature of the deep woods, cursed to forever run. It ate people in it's path, and would cry out in pain from running for so long. It was as fast as the wind could blow, appeared as a tall monstrous man, and had bloody-stumps-for-feet.

Also, totally unrelated, but, I think we need Gigantopithecus in DF...

No, population cap only effects migrants.  There's a separate variable for the amount of babies and children in your fort.
Yup

Just start off the game with absolutely no skills, and absolutely no items on embark. You still get some wood from caravan, so, it's actually possible to survive on booze in an area without water.

I'd like to see some weregremlins slowly wreak trap havoc.

DF Suggestions / Re: bodyguard duty for soldiers + a train of thought
« on: June 07, 2011, 12:34:53 am »
I really like both of those concepts. The train of thought idea would make a more complex basis for the motives of dwarves and their actions. :)

I was wondering if rubies and gems were going to be added.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Iron (and coal too please?)

You can check this on the embark map. If it say's deep metals, you're probably going to get iron.

Cavern fishing is bugged ATM.  Never seems to be a population big enough to allow you to get the fish.  Plus side is though that surface fishing works fine and mussels are super common for your shell  needs.

What? I've caught Cave Fish in the current version. I don't know what you're talking about.

Excuse me if it's already been said, but, a lot of this ties in with farming, I mean, if you even wanted something like, "The harvest for cave wheat this season was terrible" you'd need something along the lines of nutritional tracking. That's just my 2 cents. A lot of the ideas are great though, I commend you for your good effort on organizing them.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The game punishes you for being social ?
« on: June 06, 2011, 06:12:03 pm »
Try incorporating their favorite stuff in their furniture and rooms. Gems, metals, woods, etc. If one of 'em likes Pine, embark with some pine wood, and make that dwarf, a bed and cabinet out of it. If the same dwarf likes emerald, and you happen to mine some out, encrust their favorite cabinet with emerald. Make sure every dwarf has a place to eat with a table and chair, sleeps in a bed(this is a big one), give 'em a coffer or a separate room with a statue in it. Try to keep their workshops away from dwarve's they have a grudge against. example -If they don't like the cook, dont put their room next to the cooks room. Making their rooms bigger can help with happiness, as well as eating well cooked meals, with their favorite foods in it. Waterfall is a big plus, you don't even need a whole falls, just some way to generate mist in a square they'll walk through. If they gain any skill increase, they'll get a happy thought, try to keep them away from corpses, and deposit said corpses in coffins. Seeing constructions like traps and levers, well-designed architecture, all give them happy thoughts.

Also, talking with friends gives them a happy thought. So don't worry about your dwarves socializing. :P

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Orphaned babies
« on: June 02, 2011, 01:45:32 pm »
I once had one of my female military dwarves take her baby into combat, defending a well from cave dwellers. The baby ended up losing half his hand, falling in the well, and drowning. All of my dwarves could see, every time they went to take a drink. :(

Turn off night creatures in advanced world gen, and or, have fewer civs.
