DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Hot water

That's weird and a little disappointing. I guess you could always construct a drowning/boiling trap out of the river itself, or use it as a dump zone to see if it melts stuff into nothing.

"Bembol, hand me a shirt, I need a wash!" takes shirt "I pressed the rocknuts for this myself!"

Can anyone figure out how to make a scrub rag made from soap, and get a dwarf to use it instead of soap? Or is that shtuff hardcoded? I'm no scientist. :P

Hmmm, I've always thought about making bee hive surrounded spiked pits near my weapon traps, but, the lack of toxicity in their venom kinda put a halt on that idea.

I bet it wont cool. You should try making a goblin boiler room. Careful though, there's a chance, anything the boiling water touches will remain that temperature.

Also, what is the effect of wearing a hood or cloak? I thought that any clothing besides cotton candy didn't provide protection?

They provide extra protection 'round the head, neck and whatnot. They also make your dwarves look badass.

Silk alone can protect a dwarf from a copper weapon.

I actually took the liberty of destroying all clothing owned by my dwarves, and it doubled my framerate.

That is awesome, I never knew about this. But, again, I must say, cloaks and hoods!

No cloaks or hoods? They can wear leather with metal armor on.  :P

That's really funny! On another thought, this make me want to hike through the oregon cascades.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: + Difficulty

Embark with no skills, no resources, no tools. I was feeling like the game was to easy, and someone suggested that to someone else in a post. So I was all, "hmmm nothing...." tried it, and behold, it was harder.
Also what you gain is quite rewarding, when you have nothing (not including the three logs from your wagon)!

I had a friend who would focus on carving their rooms around falls. Happy thoughts everyday.

Anyways, is there a way, lets say to explore different areas of the world? Feel like I am stuck to the little one area I settled in.
In the future, probably, yes.

DF Gameplay Questions / Weaving
« on: April 25, 2011, 08:22:36 am »
So, I butchered a yak, spun his hair, and there's no automatic weaving! Auto-loom is on, I tried giving orders to weave yarn/hair thread, but still no cloth was produced, only an announcement declaring I need 15000 yarn thread. Is this a bug?

So question regarding the message "has been X about long patrol duty lately." Message on military Dorfs. I read that you need to have some down time in there schedules to avoid this, however, I've put about a month during each season as off duty(and during winter and spring, they don't even patrol out, just rest, train, then rest again for the season) and I'm still getting that message. Do I actually have to disband the squad to give them down time?

Some people make 'em patrol all year.

You're going to want to switch their alert state to inactive, to get them to actually be "off duty". They'll still train and stuff though.

Give him a bigger room too, it'll help increase the living standard.

The whole military screen is confusing at first, but if you fiddle with it, it's not super bad. Definitely not user-friendly, and could use some more aesthetically pleasing interface.

So, if you've got a squad set up with equipment, and you want to station them, press the N key, while off the other menus, and you'll be at a "Note screen" Designate key points, name them, (you can even setup patrol routes between these points) and then, you go to the Main military screen with the m key, look at their schedule, go to the month you want them stationed/training/patrolling, add an order, select the dwarves you want to be stationed/patrolling/training. You also have the option to defend burrows, if you've defined one.

Also, the S key, will allow you to select a squad and tell them to kill something or move somewhere specific on the map.
