DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Am I...weird?
« on: March 06, 2011, 12:06:17 pm »
That's nothing. I kill off immigrants until the incoming wave is a multiple of 5, spend painstaking amounts of time making all my stockpiles 5 tile crosses, make all my hallways 5 tiles across (actually quite useful), all my room sizes are multiples of 5, and only trade to merchants goods with a value that is a multiple of 5.

Oh, and i start off by finding a way to kill 2 of my starting dorfs :D

That's not bad but it's rather anticlimactic. Is it possible to make them spontaneously explode into gore? Can I make their spleen bigger than the animal? Can I remove the connective tissue and will they fall apart in the sky? Can I make the pancreas be composed of magma?

You sir, are a true dwarf.

I think just editing the raws doesn't do anything unless you generate a new world afterwards- you need to edit the save raws instead AFAIK.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Strangest thing to happen in your fort?
« on: February 27, 2011, 10:49:27 am »
A dragon walked up to my fort and exploded, killing my entire military. No combat records, no dorfs near the dragon; just a cloud of smoke, fire and ten dead dorfs.

Normally, I'll get all the candyfloss i can without opening the circus, train 50~ dwarves to legendary with full adamantine equipment, build a couple of megaprojects, stripmine an entire z-level, hit the population cap, destroy countless goblin sieges, anger and subsequently decimate the elves, get the king in residence, build pretty golden roads all over the map, create an emergency magma fort destruction lever, and have my starting dwarves die of old age.

Then, when i get bored, i'll open the circus tent and let the clowns out for an epic juggling competition. I've only got close to sealing the sides of the map once - all the other times were complete failures, for a variety of fun reasons :P

DF Gameplay Questions / Transferring to .16
« on: November 12, 2010, 06:29:45 am »
So I recently heard that goblins n' stuff were crapped up in 31.14, and i now want to switch over to 31.16. However, I don't want to lose my current fortress. With that in mind:

1) Can i simply copy the file into the folder for the new version and play my .14 fort on version .16?

2) Will doing 1) stop goblins being extinct in my world, or will I have to get a new fort if I want goblins/kobbos?

:D

Major gratz for the release, but it doesn't seem to work for 31.12 - or at least the mike mayday tileset. Any help?

afaik, once a dwarf starts military training, it'll never do civilian work again. You could work around this by not letting your dorfs train, but they'd be horribly ineffectual in battle. IMHO, you shouldn't bother unless you want a military base that has to import all it's food.

OH SCREW ALL YOU GUYS.

but seriously, my challenge this fort is not to cheat, exploit, artifact or build on more than one z-level. Argh.

Any underground tile you put water on will become irrigated and muddy. So flood the room or set up a bucket chain.

Usually, i set up the neccessities- first and foremost being a meeting hall, to get my dorfs inside. I then put up large storage areas on the top floor, and dig a farm a soon as possible- usually 1 z-level down from the entrance.

Then i build a kitchen. I usually embark with a proficient chef, so cooked food is decent quality, and prepared food sells for an inordinate amount to caravans. This way, i get to trade with the first caravan, and their rope and stuff enables me to build a well. Normally by this point, i have a drawbridge as well, and a mechanics' shop churning out mechanisms from one of my first migrants. Then set up traps, build rooms (bedrooms, dining halls, statue gardens etc) and wait for migrants/fun

All that in one year.
