DF Gameplay Questions / Transferring to .16

So I recently heard that goblins n' stuff were crapped up in 31.14, and i now want to switch over to 31.16. However, I don't want to lose my current fortress. With that in mind:

1) Can i simply copy the file into the folder for the new version and play my .14 fort on version .16?

2) Will doing 1) stop goblins being extinct in my world, or will I have to get a new fort if I want goblins/kobbos?

DF Gameplay Questions / Odd channeling bug?

So i find some magma, roughly 29 levels down, and start constructiong magma forges/smelters. When they're complete, i go to melt down some lovely bronze crap from the humans, and am told that the magma smelter "must have magma accessible from below one of the 8 boundary tiles". But i have a channeled square under the boundary tiles of each workshop, each tile leading down to 7/7 magma. Then, my well runs dry- even though it's got 6/7 unfrozen water underneath.

Any help?

So i have completely gone against established practice, and kept my elven traders alive for once- i wanted the giant war leopards they bring. Problem is, they only bring them rarely (I'll genocide elves when i get a breeding pair) and i was wondering if there's a way to increase the frequency of certain goods from elf caravans, as they don't have liasons.

DF Gameplay Questions / Exploding Dragon?

Ok, so i got my first titan just now- a dragon. He appears on the edge of the map, so i station my military outside. He charges my fortress, comes within sight of my army,

...and explodes. He dissappeared in a large flash of fire, taking 9/10 legendary dorfs with him. No corpse, no chunks, just a 10x10 block of fire and a lot of smoke. Anyone care to explain?

Little dilemma here: there's a forgotten beast trapped on my stairwell. I want to take it out wit my military, but i don't know how much force I'd need (i currently have 5 axedwarves, 1 speardwarf, 1 macedwarf, and 3 marksdwarves. All but 2 are legendary, and they are complemented by 3 giant war leopards an 2 war grizzly bears.))


On a vaguely related note, what's the best material for warhammers?

Is there any way to get some form of enemy civ on a map that has none? I don't want to anger my friendlies, and there's no goblins/kobolds on the map. I don't want to restart either (megaprojects ftw), i just want to know if there's any way of introducing gobbos etc.

DF Gameplay Questions / Art defacement without art?

So i noticed that my legendary cook/farmer (he migrated like that) has been a little depressed lately. I check his feelings, and it says he has " suffered the travesty of art defacement", in a fortress where there is a sum total of one artifact and no masterwork crafts. All he does is cook, he's never made anything other than a meal- so how could someone destroy his artwork? Eating a masterwork meal perhaps?

DF Gameplay Questions / Taming troubles

So i found an underground cavern, and put up a bunch of cabe traps in the hopes of catching something good. I got a bunch of naked mole dogs. However, said mole dogs aren't appearing on the "Tame large animals" menu caged or un-caged - and neither are my alligators of leopards.

Any help?

DF Gameplay Questions / Urist McMerchant has gone beserk!

So, Urist McMerchant was trading at my fortress, when suddenly a vile force of treehuggers arrived. I raise my (wood) drawbridge, and continue trading. However, the siege does not abate for a good half a year, during which the trapped merchants go either melancholic or beserk, and i have to put a few of them down.

What i want to know is, how does this affect relationships/trade links with the mountainhomes? does it count as my fault, theirs, or the elves?

DF Gameplay Questions / No civilizations appearing?

Ok, so I've been playing DF for a good 2-4 weeks now, and i recently downloaded the 0.31.03 version. I created a world, chose a site, and dug in, but after about 3 years i've had nought but dwarf caravans. I check the Civilization screen, and see only a dwarf society and an unnamed olm man one.

Abandon fortress. No fun there.

I try with 5 or 6 more forts in another couple of worlds, but no civilizations for me. I even started one fort as close as possible to a goblin civ, and didn't even get a snatcher at 300 pop. Am I doing it wrong, or is there something i can do to make it better?
