DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Exploding Dragon?
« on: June 19, 2010, 02:13:34 am »
It can't have run away- i checked it with K after the initial (square) fireball. Maybe a roasted chunk of it is on the moon, but i doubt it's gained sentience.

Nope, not there either. The only thing left behind is some steel armour and dorf ash.

Well, it hasn't landed for an entire ingame season then, and i can't see it in any of the upper z-levels. It looks like it just exploded and vanished.

Have you got coke or charcoal? That's needed for steel - an alloy of iron and carbon.

-Hope this helps

To the best of my knowledge, Dragons can't fly. Also, the world is vanilla- with the exception of bears/giant felines not needing a dungeon master.

DF Gameplay Questions / Exploding Dragon?
« on: June 18, 2010, 02:14:10 pm »
Ok, so i got my first titan just now- a dragon. He appears on the edge of the map, so i station my military outside. He charges my fortress, comes within sight of my army,

...and explodes. He dissappeared in a large flash of fire, taking 9/10 legendary dorfs with him. No corpse, no chunks, just a 10x10 block of fire and a lot of smoke. Anyone care to explain?

Use dwarf therapist. It's a program that runs parallel to DF, and allows you to see all dwarfs' labours and alter them accordingly.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Martial trances - What are they?
« on: June 18, 2010, 01:31:50 pm »
Martial trances occur randomly in combat, and a dwarf is nigh-invulnerable while in one. However, once a dwarf exits a trance, he/she is likely to be tired. For me, they seem to happen more frequently and last longer for higher level fighters.

Hope this helps.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How much military for a FB?
« on: June 18, 2010, 08:49:55 am »
It's a gigantic hairy toad, with thin wings of stretched skin. It looks perfectly killable. Also, my dorfs wear/wield masterwork steel.

The FB has cornered a mason the was in the caverns, and has been killing him for roughly a year now. Seriously, he's just sitting there without arms or legs, refusing to die.

Little dilemma here: there's a forgotten beast trapped on my stairwell. I want to take it out wit my military, but i don't know how much force I'd need (i currently have 5 axedwarves, 1 speardwarf, 1 macedwarf, and 3 marksdwarves. All but 2 are legendary, and they are complemented by 3 giant war leopards an 2 war grizzly bears.))

On a vaguely related note, what's the best material for warhammers?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: bones
« on: June 16, 2010, 09:18:00 am »
In almost every fort I've played, i tend to get a high master bonecrafter come in with migrants at around 60 pop., so i would say crafts is the best use for bones (providing you have a skilled dorf). Alternatively, bolts for practice/hunting. They're better than wood, and both wood/metal are more valuable for other things.

I don't know, but infants do have a disconcertingly high level of combat mortality, so you could well be right in that the arrow hits the baby, not the parent.

Another plus: no dwarves are saddened by the death of a friend- just the parents.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Need more gobbos

That's a point, i could always go for some HFS, although i don't have any animalman civs.

DF Gameplay Questions / Need more gobbos
« on: June 16, 2010, 08:08:22 am »
Is there any way to get some form of enemy civ on a map that has none? I don't want to anger my friendlies, and there's no goblins/kobolds on the map. I don't want to restart either (megaprojects ftw), i just want to know if there's any way of introducing gobbos etc.

In my opinion, the best tileset to use is mike mayday's tileset- it has little graphical representations of everything, rather than ASCII. Download the game plus tileset here: http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.php     (Delete your old game - this downloads the entire game with the graphics implemented)

As for pausing, you can pause at any time with spacebar. When paused, you can pretty much do anything you like- issue orders etc.- you just need to unpause for your dwarves to carry it out. Furthermore, whenever you go into any of the menus (to build a door etc.) the game automatically pauses, so you don't have to worry. Caveat: the {S}quad screen doesn't pause, meaning you have to manually pause if you want to manipulate your squads.

Hope this helps
