DF Gameplay Questions / Art defacement without art?

So i noticed that my legendary cook/farmer (he migrated like that) has been a little depressed lately. I check his feelings, and it says he has " suffered the travesty of art defacement", in a fortress where there is a sum total of one artifact and no masterwork crafts. All he does is cook, he's never made anything other than a meal- so how could someone destroy his artwork? Eating a masterwork meal perhaps?

How do i tame creatures? Whenever i go to tame my caged animals, they don't appear on the "tame large animal" screen, and if i release them then they cause havoc and flee/die, without ever appearing on the tame animals screen.

I don't need a dungeon master either,- i changed their raws from [PET_EXOTIC] to [PET].

So i found an underground cavern, and put up a bunch of cabe traps in the hopes of catching something good. I got a bunch of naked mole dogs. However, said mole dogs aren't appearing on the "Tame large animals" menu caged or un-caged - and neither are my alligators of leopards.

Any help?

So, Urist McMerchant was trading at my fortress, when suddenly a vile force of treehuggers arrived. I raise my (wood) drawbridge, and continue trading. However, the siege does not abate for a good half a year, during which the trapped merchants go either melancholic or beserk, and i have to put a few of them down.

What i want to know is, how does this affect relationships/trade links with the mountainhomes? does it count as my fault, theirs, or the elves?

Try the + or - keys on the numpad. Failing that, DFG uses / and * above the numpad- it could be that.
I think you can go into the text files and change keybindings, but i'm not sure how.

okay then, last two(ish) impassably noobish questions:

Is the embark civ screen just 'c' after embarking?

and do friendly animalmen speak, initiate trade etc? or do they just sit passively? (or could you somehow cagetrap them and use them in fortress defence?)

Also, how do i make contact?  Do the humans/treehuggers/goblins have to initiate it with their first caravan/deforesting complaint/siege?

Ok, so I've been playing DF for a good 2-4 weeks now, and i recently downloaded the 0.31.03 version. I created a world, chose a site, and dug in, but after about 3 years i've had nought but dwarf caravans. I check the Civilization screen, and see only a dwarf society and an unnamed olm man one.

Abandon fortress. No fun there.

I try with 5 or 6 more forts in another couple of worlds, but no civilizations for me. I even started one fort as close as possible to a goblin civ, and didn't even get a snatcher at 300 pop. Am I doing it wrong, or is there something i can do to make it better?
