DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your Best Building
« on: July 24, 2011, 07:50:55 am »
There was the unfinished project of Clashworks, which was meant to be a 4x4 iron tunnel that went all over the map.  You can see some of what I got done here:  http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-9693-clashworks

*Opens map*
*Sees wonderful ascii*
*Sees an impressive amount of dead dwarves, pets and goblins*
*Views +iron tunnel+ made of what he assumes is goblinite*

Don't ever change bay12.

Only one I know of. It's been put on hold however and it's pretty much dead.
It's a shame really, generally the community is pretty quick to translate things.

EDIT: I have to say after looking at the game, the poor English translations do have a charm to them

A picture drawn by Tofu which pretty much sums up this thread1.

Like the Russian guy who won my last giveaway? 0 playhours in the past week with nothing but free games and Team Fortress 2. Makes me think it's a alt ideling account they used to have.
No proof of this but it does look suss.

I just saw a thread about Russians selling accounts again. Cult acutally had to ask if the people who bought the games should be banned.
Clearly they should, by buying the invites you're only making the problem worse. It's like partipating in the ivory, drug or slave trade and saying it's fine because you only bought the products.

Some of the excuses I've seen to not ban them are laughable.
"They don't speak English, how would they know." Just the people we want. More people who won't read the rules and post up fake giveaways.

Psst, Horrid.
Might want to lock the topic before it turns into a further debate about great Toady's sexual preference.

Well news about that Witcher 2 thing.
The thread was deleted with what I would assuming was pressure from Cult.

I'm pretty dishearted by this. The mods had their chance to really buckle down and ban some of the arseholes on the site. Looks they they chose to do nothing.

Personally I don't see this working without some iron-grip mods but I'll try and supress the cynic in me and see if it doesn't fall flat.

EDIT: Although from this point on I doubt I'm gonna be very active in the community. Might as well leech some games. When in Rome...

It's not all that much really. The Orange Box which was most the majority of peoples' introduction to steam is valued at $20.

Add any other Valve game or even 1 or 2 indie games and you're easily over it.

Can be both.

You make a giveaway for a steam game, you then gift the winner of that giveway (decided by RNG)

You can also make a giveaway for game keys that can be activated on steam, though it seems the site is trying to move away from this.

As it's been said before it's already been posted.

That said I'm not sure where you're getting that Tarn is confirmed to be homosexual. It has no mention of his sexuality. The only mention of anything to do with his realtionships is the one with a Cisco system admin, which although is generally a male dominated field does have female employees.

I would think the real reason why he bans for gay jokes it's because they're usually crap that adds nothing to the convsation and I doubt his sexuality no matter what it is would have any affect on that.

Feeling a bit sorry for Toady at this point. Seems like everyone is going to be picking through the little personal life he talked about.

On the topic of leechers I was rather digusted by a pretty big dick move I came across on the current Witcher 2 giveaway.

The guy who started the giveaway (who had given away two games before) stated that it was key rather than a steam game.
Now most people are afraid of getting keys since people used to steal your account with them (today valve won't go by one key and you've also got things like steamguard). So people were a bit hestiate of it, which they rightly should.

Yet along comes a user call daveysmith who decided he could play on this fear. Openly stated that the uploader was well known for stealing accounts. YET HE STILL ENTERED THE GIVE AWAY. He of course did this to stop other people from wanting to enter. Thus increasing his chances of winning (in his mind).

Now this could almost be forgiven if he was a good community member. Heres the kicker though, he was just a leecher with no giveaways, no thank you comments and no forum posts.
Now this guy had the hide to slander the person which might just have gifted him a $60 game for free.

I mean really. How do people get so self-absorbed?

"Urist McAxemurderer was born in the year 1736."
...The hell?  The year's only 1512!

Good point you raise. Though I would think it would have to be very abstract.
Example:
"Axemurder" was a human land in the far away lands of "Planecountries" from across the seas. "Axemurder" was a strange land where men allow women to sit at their feasts and the men were known to competely shave their heads. Axemurder were brutal rivials of "Soaktrees" an Elven settlement.

Anyway dates could still be included if abstracted again. Much like how we have a B.C./A.D. system. In your example Urist Mcaxemurderer was born in -271, or 271 B.C. or what ever dorfs would have.
It really makes more sense. It alludes that the races migrated to your lands rather than popping up out of thin air.

Edit: I think I made a pretty big mistake with those dates. Should show me for trying to think at 4am.

Lets try again: The land which mr axemurderer came from would have been formed in -271 atleast (or 271 B.C.). This makes the world 271 years older than my (the player's) world, so the dates would all match up.

Another edit: Should be -224 years. /facepalm

Fallout 3? Really?

The closest it had was that building full with ghouls. Thats it, just ghouls.
Those things would go down easy if you pulled out a melee weapon and held down M1 for a while.

Fallout 3 ruined most of the atmosphere for me, mostly because everything was copy pasted or just too "whacky" for the setting.
The only thing I really liked about Fallout 3 were the raiders but it didn't take the chance to flesh out their culture a bit more. Could have been much more "punk" and Madmax inspired with the world forced into brutal anarchy and survival of the fittest.

The Pitt DLC would be an example of this. I fucking loved that dlc. It had a great setting, good charactors and moral grayness. Instead of being a saint or baby eating like stock FO3. It also explored deeper themes like rebuilding society, the devsion between rich/poor and the price of one innocient soul versus a whole city.  While FO3 was LOLOLWATER, LOLOLFATBOY, LOLGIANTANTS, LOLOLRANINTOMYFATHERBYMISTAKEMISSEDMOSTOFTHEGAME.

I might come across as harsh but I find games that try to do the "forced horror" that aren't based around horror game mechanics to just be laughable. It's like watching Pride and the Prejudice and all of a sudden they decided to sit down and talk about income tax for the next 20 minutes before going back to being socially retarded.

Could start with all the material needed to make a few cage traps. Lead your dragon problem intoi the traps using a brave dwarf and let the good times roll.
