not that i think you'd care or something, i just wanted to tell you you're wrong
I care a bit - you make a valid point!
Apologies for such a sweeping statement. I don't really believe it would drive no one away, it just seemed like it would be safer (in terms of overall fan happiness) to not include it, to me at least, since a lot of people for it seem to not really mind if it doesn't happen. Though I guess the most important thing would actually be to not include it if it wasn't done properly. I quite like the zone and auto dump idea.
This rubble would definitely not be a make or break decision for me at least.

@ NW - It doesn't really strike me that you need to tell people what they find fun in a game. They may or may not find what you've written down fun, but saying that people just don't understand why they are having fun feels arrogant. You enjoy it for your reasons and everyone else can enjoy it for theirs.

Contaminants aren't fun. At least not for me. They add nothing for the game but a noticeable FPS drop as they build up and the requirement of a monthly map clean by dwarf hack. They are tedious. HOWEVER, they are not constantly getting directly in the way. The slowing down becomes noticeable after a long time (only because of the jump UP in FPS when you remove it all).

I'm not against adding difficulty for the sake of difficulty - seeing your points has actually convinced me that it can be a good thing and should sometimes happen, but I still think rubble is not the best example of this. It could so easily just involve a load of tedium with a minimal impact on game-play and mostly simply slowing it down. I wouldn't be furious if it was put in, I'd adapt to it and have some fun doing it, but it strikes me it would only be fun the first time and from then on would be an obstacle I am forced to overcome time and time again.

Mostly I would veer towards not having it in simply to avoid alienating the player base who do not think like you and who may not find it fun. Not including it won't push away people who want it, including it could push away those who don't.

as i understand, he is not arguing against rubble having benefits, rather against the idea that something has to be beneficial to have any purpose in game. i feel the same way, i wouldn't mind having mechanisms to make rubble useful, and i can think of an immediate benefit it would have: obstructing a channel from above simply by dumping material over it would be tremendously useful for diverting water and magma courses, but i'm also bothered by the mindset that anything that hinders progress is a bad thing

Ah, I see. My mistake!
I agree that something doesn't have to be beneficial to the players to have purpose in the game, in a general sense.
I feel rubble may not be one of these things though, since I think it would simply not be very fun or engaging without something to use it for. It has a lot of not heavily interesting (at least for me) problems associated with it that don't require much more than patience to overcome without at least having something to use the crudrubble for. It wouldn't ruin the game - like I said, I am not against the new architecture that might be needed. But for the drawbacks I feel it would come off neutral to my enjoyment of the game without some benefit. In this case. So I'd rather time wasn't wasted for, what I would see as, no net gain.

Harder sieges (as an example) provide no benefit for the player, but certainly have purpose and I am all for them!

@King DZA - Actually, what you said was pretty funny. I laughed and I applaud your satire!

@NW What I don't understand is why you seem to be against the rubble being useful?

I like the idea of rubble. I think slowing down mining, forcing more thought about architecture etc. is good!
But I also like the (realistic) idea that rubble can be used for something. And I can see the point about complexity being good for its own sake, but I don't find that idea alone appealing.
It will slow down the initial process and also slow down my ability to house my dwarves, possibly leading to their hilarious deaths.
This makes the game harder and adds an interesting spin if balanced right, but it really only adds difficulty and complexity. I don't buy into rubble for the sake of rubble adding any depth, so I'd like to see features around it.

Although the "there will be less junk" argument just isn't true. There will not be MORE, there will be at best the same, but it will just take longer to get all the junk. The point could be true if there were more features and uses for rubble though!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Above Ground Fortress Plan?

Thanks guys! I can't believe I forgot Hospitals, they involve so much fun. Probably some sort of Water and Magma piping should be below basement level?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Above Ground Fortress Plan?
« on: June 03, 2011, 10:17:33 am »
Ok, so I'm planning on building an entirely aboveground fortress, out of glass and clay, ideally near a volcano. I'm just trying to decide what sections I should divide my town into, and what should be in each section?
Just curious for peoples ideas!  :D

So far I'm thinking:

Wall + Moat + Drawbridge!

Royal Quarter:
Nobles Housing
Fortress Guard
Jail
Emergency Shelter<

Living Quarter:
Dining Hall
Gardens + Statues
Houses for normal dwarves
Hospital<

Trade Quarter:
Trade Depot
Shops
Traders House
Crafts Workshops + Stockpiles

Food Quarter:
Farms, Inside and Out
Workshops
Pasture<

Religious Quarter:
Temple to each God

Wells and Mist Generators at various places!

Just wondering what else other people think I should include? And in what section?
I know I've got more than 4 Quarters too  :P

Edit: Added Suggestions!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Bone Clothing?

*On the table is an image of cave spiders in Urist McWife bone*

Edit: While I am here, what useful things can a WOODcrafter make with a strange mood? Because aren't most useful wood things made by carpetry?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Bone Clothing?
« on: April 29, 2011, 09:39:54 am »
Just a quick question;

I had a dwarf make a bone shield during a strange mood, which is undoubtably dwarfy, and material doesn't effect shields as much so it is made all the better.

Is the dwarf able to make literally ANYTHING from the bones? For example, a bone robe? Has anyone got bone clothing? Or metal clothing, because I'd guess if you can make metal clothes (not spoilermetal) then bone clothes might work?

Thanks!

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortess or Minecraft?

@thvaz:
I think he Duke was making a point that it should be YOUR opinion, but the way you seem to have decided that Minecraft is better than DF, full stop, and that's why you like it isn't really applicable. DF is a better game FOR YOU.

Anyway, I can easily see the enjoyment of both games, I prefer DF for its depth and variety, but I like Minecraft for playing with my friends, I don't play it much on its own though - its a bit of a lonely game I feel.

Bugs dont have to make no sense, theyre just unintentional programming flaws, whether they make sense or not is arbitrary.
I wouldn't say its an exploit, because it slightly makes sense, as in, if you drop a crapload of stone into a lake of anything, you will displace the liquid to a higher level. This kind of mimics that.

DF Modding / Re: DFHack 0.5.2
« on: February 21, 2011, 12:52:15 pm »
I guess this means I won't be able to use DFHack from now on.  Back to digging exploratory tunnels to find things.  :(

The MSVC 10 thing requires me to get an administrator to download it.  Also, I REALLY don't like the requirement of downloading something just to be able to run something else.  Is there any way for me to get around needing to have it?

I wouldn't worry about it, its from the MS website and its only around 5mb, so security and size shouldn't really be too much of an issue, and it is from a reliable poster. If it requires that .dll file to run, well, there isn't really much you can do about it as far as I am aware?

In other news thanks for the update! Now I can find an embark with, you know, actual metal!

DF General Discussion / Re: The most welcomed type of DF development
« on: February 16, 2011, 08:01:20 am »
Every fort I've had and enjoyed has died a FPS death eventually. Its a shame that even when you take time to do your best to keep the FPS high (in some cases "removing" features by, for example, not using running water or magma), it still dies.
Losing is fun when it isn't predictable, but when you start a fort inevitably knowing that even if it is all going well, you will eventually fail, is a bit disappointing.

But I do still enjoy the game, I can just see why people might want things instead of new features for a while.

DF General Discussion / Re: Microcline
« on: February 11, 2011, 08:32:05 pm »
Personally the standard colour of microcline is a bit like eye-rape. Cobaltite isn't much better, I tweak the colours of both of them slightly.

Microcline stands out as the most visible representative of all cheap and otherwise unremarkable stone, kind of like how bauxite is still loved by many although it has become redundant.

Don't listen to the mean man bauxite. We still love you for your magma stopping awesomeness. So what if now loads of rocks have stolen your thunder, you'll always be the original.

*Sways back and forth, crooning to the chunk of bauxite clutched closely to his chest*

I've heard that if you say Footkerchief in your post, he is immediately summoned with all the knowledge you could need.
And if you say it 3 times in one post, he appears in real life to take you to the magma baths for asking too many questions.

Edit: Tol is Right! I did forget to ask my question... hmmm... if an elf dies in the woods, so no one hears it, is it still Dorfy? Or does it have to be witnessed?
