Does studding an item increase its effective weight from a damage perspective?
I was just thinking an axe with the weight of platinum and the cutting edge of blue metal.

Dwarf Fortress: A place where Carpe Diem really means Seized by Carp.

Did the "No ETA" part of Toady's post concern anyone else a bit? I was hoping that the news of having losts of quick releases meant we were getting close to this one, it has been nearly 3 months now. Not that Toady ever gave us reason to expect consistent updates, I just like them!   8)

But his post made it look like we've got a medium-long wait for this release still. Not that I would complain much if that were the case, I'd be disappointed though!
Thoughts?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Goblin Gas Chamber?

Who needs topic when you've got Nazis?

The magma mist seems like the best way? Maybe a floor of grates over some magma, with a hole for the magma in the middle, then cave in stuff into the magma from above, ideally make the room the right size so the mist fills the room? Quite small, or have lots of cave ins.

Back off topic, from the theme of current games, DF certainly is missing Nazi Zombies.

Sometimes I feel the pain too, but I try not to let it bother me because, well, although the game is awesome and I want to be able to play the perfect version of it, one guy gives us this game, essentially for free.
That isn't to say you don't have a valid point(s) though, personally, the main issue that bugs me is the FPS, because you really do have to design your whole fort around maximising FPS if you want to keep it going. And below 10 it isn't really a playable game for me, because it just takes to long to do things. And I like to do things in a game.

Haha, ahh the Euro, get back to me when it is worth more than my currency, then we'll talk  :P
I think that the nobles play with us in RL.

David Cameron, Conservative throws a fluffy wambler at the Nick Clegg, Liberal Democrat
The Liberal Democrat has been struck down!

But yeah, I'm happiest when things are being released frequently, I like updates! Be it bugs or features!

Hear Hear!
I'm not much of a poster either, but there have been a few complaints around bug fixing vs. new features.
Sure, I'd like crutches, hospitals, economies and wagons to work. But what I like much MUCH more than that is that this game is founded and developed by essentially one guy, who asks for nothing from his fanbase in terms of money.
We aren't entitled to complain, and have no reason to! The game is awesome, playable and regularly being improved. Bug fixes happen, quite frequently considering there is a SINGLE PROGRAMMER.
It is less game breakingly buggy than many mass developed beta games, and it is in alpha.
For those of you who donate and feel that it should give you some say in what Toady does with his game, for us fans, really aren't donating for the right reasons!

So really, I'm saying what Beardless is saying, ideally make the game perfect, but until then don't let any of the complaining get you down Toady! Keep up the awesome work.

Just my 2 cents, well, 2 pennies, being from England. And I mean no offense to anyone here, I just wanted to show solidarity for Toady.

@Crux
Apologies that my sarcasm did not come across, I am very much aware that its a bug, just saying that DF players tend to just adapt to them as use them as metaphorical "inadequate features", not that they LITERALLY are.
I assumed the OP of the comment meant something similar?

24
Heh, it isn't so much that Dwarf Fortress doesn't have bugs as to how alot of the players don't see them as bugs, more as "inadequate features" - like when it sometimes accidentally rained magma:
"Oh crap, my dwarves are melting! If I put them inside however... and use this magma rain to kill off migrants/nobles/goblins... its basically just a new form of fortress defense!"
Or an excuse to use !!SCIENCE!!:
"Oh crap, that dwarf melted outside... I wonder if I put a baby out there... Yep, still melting... what about a mother/baby combo? Hmm, still melting, but the mother seems to be using the baby as an umbrella... GO !!SCIENCE!!"

Lol, blue emu, you do get around with that link, skimming over the forums today I think you've cropped up about 7 times!
Not that the orbital magma cannon is undeserving of praise.

I always build my magma forges down at magma sea level, to stop FPS reducing pumping.

Wrought iron (which is what is probably closest to what is used) is similar in properties, its a bit more brittle, but it holds its edge better. Because bronze is quite ductile - it dulls quickly.
Though really, you're right, bronze weapons are slightly better (only slightly) and the main reason for the iron age is generally considered to be ease of access.
So they should at least be about equal!

I think the general thing to do is build a dining room in hell, in the theme of Sparta.

Yeah it isn't extravangantly high, its most unusual property is the inflexibility. And its workability.
The carbon nanotubes that have strengths of over 60GPa have only recorded those strengths on nano-testing levels, because getting a uniform atomic thick tube and making billions of them to weave into a lattice is... time consuming at best.
Although, carbon nanotubes are very much anisotropic, along the tube they are much stronger.

Urist McDwarf cancels drink: giving birth to flat worm spawn.
(Insert picture of alien chestburster thingy here)

So your source of drinking connects to a chamber that is specifically designed to fill with dead people? In a version where contaminated water can cause instant necrosis of the eyes/brains/pancreas?
You sir, are my new God, command me as you will.

As for the giant worm, you do know you have to throw dwarves at him to try to lure him up and find a way to weaponise him dont you? For !!SCIENCE!!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Guard Towers?
« on: December 12, 2010, 11:24:55 pm »
It sounds like you do not intend to build said guard towers if they're useless?
This is most undwarfy, in fact, I would personally make sure to build 50+ zlvl towers. Out of adamantine. Ideally with magma flowing from the fortifications.
This way, you just kill the goblins with your awesome.
