DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Killing blows?

Spears don't work great against really hard material.

So far, I've done well with a fairly even mix of spears, axes, and hammers. Not counting the crossbow squad.

Perhaps he attached the sword to the crutch with some dwarven variant of duct tape?

Magma?

Dear Urist McMasonbrain,

Alright, I could have forgiven you for walling yourself on the cavern side of the protective wall. But, please, knock on the wall a few times to let someone know you're out there.

The appropriate response is not to finish the wall, find you're locked out, and decide to go sprinting off to the far corner of the known caverns, where my usual post-fortifying check doesn't catch you until you starve to death.

At the very least, you could have kept your eyes open and sprinted into the unknown caverns, you useless jackass.

Hmmm. Does the 'explosion' go upward through grates?

Channel out a hall, lay grates, assign a lever or pressure plates to fill the booze stockpile below with magma. Dwarven landmines!

Dear Urists McMilitary,
I had time to compose a letter to 'Beardpain' the troll while you were beating on him.
You are still beating on him.
Seriously, injuries that you guys have caused have healed. While you are attacking him.
For Armok's sake, he's unconscious on a ledge. There are three of you. Someone shove him off into the water, or grab a rock or something.
-The overseer, who could pump magma up to deal with him faster than you guys are.

I nearly fell off my chair laughing at this.
Oh, and quoted for the sigtext thread.

Seriously, this happened. Yellow injuries turned brown, and blue injuries turned yellow. He even healed a blue lung and eye.

Dear traders,

No, I'm not taking your explanation of 'hood snake venom' at face value.
How long is the trip that you end up with an entire wagon of barrels full of it?

-The overseer, suddenly feeling in need of a bath.

Not VG Cats. Three Panel Soul comes to mind. Loved that DF style there.

My first thought: pipes made from minotaur horns. Most dwarfy way to smoke.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: So. Horizontal fortress or vertical?
« on: June 29, 2011, 03:07:42 am »
I'm a fan of roughly (very roughly) organized vertical fortresses. Recently, with empty levels between occupied ones, so that I can 1) make dwarf-washing troughs without leaking into bedrooms or something, B) dig shop- or area-specific rooms for stockpiles, and Isuzu) mine those levels without worrying about aesthetics.

My current fortress has a five-by-five staircase in the middle, from top to bottom. This will be channeled out in the center as soon as I figure out how deep I can go, so I can ultimately implement the GoblinClock.

Until then, there's just nothing quite like a cave crocodile or blind cave troll punching its way through your dwarves, only to have a dining miner boot the thing in the noggin and send the unconscious beast rolling down 67 flights of stairs.

264
Dear Kalanenir Usithbembul, cave crocodile,

However much it pains me, you do deserve some respect in downing no less than a dozen of my dwarves. Considering that one of them seems to have removed all of your teeth with a copper hammer, no less than six of those were from, apparently, shoving them around. (Seriously, there's pages of 'the croc pushes Urist McIdiot in the chest')

Especially worthy, considering the bronze bolt lodged in your face.

I'll notice you quit when you picked on your first minor, though. You pushed him in the thigh, mildly bruising it, and he told you to kindly go piss off via a pick delivered directly to the heart.

Learn to pick your targets better.

Dear Duradzulash, troll,

You are the reason the cave croc killed so many--because the military's been beating on your unconscious form for months now, letting him run a rampage.

Seriously, just die.

Before you go, I do want to congratulate you on the indirectly but aptly chosen moniker, 'Beardpain'. Good job.

I haven't tested it yet, but the Lazy Newb Pack has an 'exotic pet' switch, which seems to be made to get the otherwise exotic animals tamable.

I'm just waiting to catch something that's not a dog.

And still praying that an upgrade brings the ability to tell a trainer what to work on.

...You'll go ballistic when you check your starting 7. All of them like working outdoors.

This is why they weren't allowed to stay at the mountainhome.

267
Dea--GAH! Jeez! For Armok's... What is... Cor!

Ahem.

Dear wormy tendrils,

Please stop being so damn creepy.
Until that time--or until I figure out how to burn all of you--I'm going inside.

-Overseer

PS: Gods below, that's almost enough to put me off my drink.

268
Seriously? A bunch of probably drunk dwarven merchants give you some liquid for free, and you all think it's something divine?

Yeah, I'm sort of betting it's because they were on a deadline and didn't want to stop the cart.

269
Hmm, reading one how to deal this will cross over to ichor and blood...

What about forbidding the barrel but deisgnating the liquid to be dumped? Will that at least get it out onto the floor?
Or dumping the whole thing, then reclaiming the barrel but dumping or forbidding the liquid?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Broken spine?
« on: June 21, 2011, 10:11:22 pm »
I've had a couple dwarves heal (I think...) from a broken lower spine.

They could have just been great crutch walkers and moved onto using their -Iron Boots- as maces, or it could be that a broken spine doesn't always mean that the motor nerve gets damaged, and they got lucky.
