This guy must have been incredibly desperate to try something so foolish. It's sad that he thought there were only two choices: dying of treatable conditions or go to prison. Of course, this event probably caused most Americans to think that "prisoners have it too good.", instead of "Man, our healthcare system sucks."

I hear talk about "secret deals", corruption, and so forth. That's a legitimate concern.

But what about the completely public corruption?

The private prison industry, well... it exists. That's bad enough. It exists, it's corporate-controlled, and it's profitable. If you think that the "military-industrial complex" is bad (not to say it isn't), consider the fact that we occasionally find it reasonable, apparently, to outsource such a part of our justice system to corporate interests. These corporations have every interest in (of course) maximizing profit, without any concern for social well-being or rehabilitation. Consider this: A company who owns prison has every incentive to promote recidivism and bad behavior rather than curtail it, and they're known to lobby for stricter sentencing and harsher "tough on crime" legislation, for fairly obvious reasons. The fact that we allow corporate interests to literally own and run our prisoners with shoddy oversight is despicable even on its face for the reasons mentioned, and is even worse when you consider the allegations of poorly-run facilities and the fact that the government/public doesn't even necessarily save money by doing it.

Unfortunately, most Americans are ignorant or don't care about their prison system. A few people who posted in this thread are proof of that.

"Prison is a free ride" "3 meals a day, roof over their head, and human rights"

Yeah. A high chance of getting raped, getting barely enough food to sustain yourself, living in a poorly built facility, constant abuse, and having absolutely no freedom. Too good compared to what? Death? ::) What most Americans really want is for prisoners to just... disappear. Doesn't matter what their crime was, just that they broke the law. And, apparently, breaking the law automatically makes you subhuman scum.

It's not entirely the corporations' fault. They just gave the public what they wanted. The high recidivism rate is just proof to most people that all prisoners are evil. When in reality it's because rehabilitation was never a real goal.

Here's a link for people who want to learn more about the U.S. prison system:

Speaking of online play, I just managed my first ascent on CAO (not sure if I had a legitimate one while playing offline), and it was a 15-runer. Holy cow!

Congratulation! What's your CAO handle?

I'll give the discussion there a "somewhat interesting..." but I kinda' wish I hadn't seen it. I know it's tentative brainstorm/discussion stuff, but when th'first substantial statement on the page is "LET'S MAKE CRAWL HARDER, HURR" (The pre-req stuff), it's kinda' painful to read. Really, folks? You need to make a game with <1% victory rate even harder?

The win rate is around 0.79%, which I frankly think is too high. That's close to 1%! We can't have people going around and saying that Crawl is too easy.

Scythes are really bad. Just so you know. :P

Octopodes are really neat, but they have what is probably the hardest early game possible except for some challenge builds. 0 AC hurts, a lot.

Granted, I played them on erocrawl a few weeks ago, back when they didn't have the +1 AC (which Eronarm doesn't really like much as a solution, but he wants to see how it works out before trying other options to help out the early game) and had worse aptitudes and no camouflage mutation.

I won 27 times. In case anyone needs a reminder.  :P

Octopodes don't seem to be very difficult. I never played one before, but Zoidberg reached the Lair pretty easily.

Personnally, i wish they made the Orb escape actually fun instead of just going to make it more difficult, with the Orb preventing you completely to teleport or blink but allowing you to blast those pesky demons by increasing a lot either your combat damage or a lot spell damage depending on what class your character is during your escape.

It would feel much more rewarding like this in my opinion

You don't find constant nerfs and increased difficulty fun?!

Sludge Elf Transmuter - I like explosions and pugilism.
Ogre Hunter - I like ogres.
Deep Dwarf Earth Elementalist - Destroying the dungeon is fun!

Shatter is fun for teleporting into the Orb chamber (or entering the last floor of the Vaults) and killing everything in 3-4 turns. I wanna try a death knight before 0.9 comes out. Having a pet capable of killing everything in the game by itself sounds fun.

General Discussion / Re: Tv Tropes Informal Poll

Sidenote: Anyone who's read much of Troper Tales, especially the parts that have since been closed down (yes, they were that bad) knows exactly what is wrong within the editor community there.
You've piqued my curiosity, can I ask what kind of stuff got axed? PM is fine if you don't think it belongs here.

I believe the incest pages, the "smart but lazy" pages and anything sexual because tropers were just posting their fucking creepy sex stories.

Tropers' tales
* Brother and sister, cousins, etc. incest stories
* Covert Pervert (pedos)
* Fetish Fuel and Persevere sexual lust
* Complete Monster, For The Evulz, etc. (animal abuse and other psychopathic stories)
* N Word Privileges (racism)

There's also a disturbingly lengthy article about an obscure and graphic lolicon show. It's probably still there.

1) I used to browse (and sometimes edit) the articles. The wiki is slowly getting worse due to its community. I still visit the site once in awhile.

2) I find the site interesting. I stay away from the forum.

3) I think the site should stick to cataloging tropes and get rid of tropers' tales and the various unrelated articles.

If you go the mage route and can't find Tornado, then Refrigeration would be a good choice. It'll allow you wipe out the guards on Vault:8 and the Orb chamber in Zot in a few turns. Though, it'll destroy your potions. Other good spells:

Airstrike - Decent attack spell with smite-targeting.
Insulation - Fighting electric golems, black draconians, and storm dragons without rElec is very painful.
Intoxication (if you have clarity) - Useful against draconians, orb guardians, and many others.

Thanks, i'm very far from being as good as you though :D

I can only dream of fetching 15 runes like you did, my few offline adventures in Hell and Pandemonium convinced me that it was definitively not place i should go without having a death wish.

Oh and i was wrong, it was not elliptic that made the level 14 rune fetching , but jaeger and qwqw :
http://crawl.akrasiac.org/tourney10/scoreboard.html

qwqw is elliptic's speed-runner account iirc. The top players seem to use many alt accounts.

Whats with SpEn? They're way to soft and nimble for me. If anything, they can only train up stealth and run to the orb, which doesn't sound very effective.

SpEn has extreme speed and the ability to instant-kill monsters it has no business messing with.

To explain how it works:

Roll a SpEn, learned a bunch of low level utility spells (along with haste and invisibility). Worship Jiyva for a free rune, steal the other 2 runes, and dive down the dungeon, while avoiding most monsters. Invisibility and your speed allows you to pick and choose your battles, because most dungeon monsters don't have see invisible.

For Zot, just dive down to Zot:5, teleport randomly, and ninja the Orb. It comes down to a lot of experience and luck. I'm not very fast, as my fastest win was with a level 18 SpVM in 8 hours.  :P I guess you'd have to stab the guardians now, since they nerfed Apportation (and the Orb screams when touched).

@Robsoie

Congrats on your 1st win!  :D

And to ggeezz as well. Your clan is now comfortably in the Top 20.

I just realized that games on CDO count on CAO, so losing my Centaur Berserker on Zot:5 ended my 3-game streak from the previous tournament.  :'(

@baruk

Your character looks capable of getting the silver and abyssal runes. And you can probably transition into a mage quite smoothly, if you wanted. I suggest turning off axes and turning on spellcasting if you go that route. I see that your air magic skill is pretty high. Are you trying to get Tornado?

2nd win in a row. I wanted to go for all 15 runes, but my mutation set got pretty bad after getting Cerebov's rune. Notable moments: Killing Cerebov while only taking 10 damage and this:
