Hmm... mummy ice conjurors really are pretty good.  My favourite bit is the way that when you're surrounded on all sides, you can simply cast Mephitic Cloud on yourself.

Then again, I had a stroke of luck in this game - finding a Staff of Power in the sewers.  It's massively increased my ability to spam Mephitic Cloud and Frost.

Y'know, I say all that, yet I'm still only on D:7... ah well, you get a warped feeling for game length when you forget every level several times to redo it.

Also, while I'm with Sif Muna atm (slow piety loss and free channeling FTW) I was thinking that Chei could also be an interesting option, since he patches some of the mummy's weak spots (weak to fire, poor stats, no escape spells) and as far as I can tell his piety doesn't decay.

I won with a MuCj. Sif Muna is, by far, the best god for mummies. Free channeling is broken and there are no downsides to worshiping Sif. Stat boosts are nice, but only hybrids make full use of it. Ozocubu's Refrigeration is better than Slouch. And fire resistance isn't that hard to find. Controlled blink and teleport are the only escape spells you'll ever need.

I and many other players WILL startscum until we get the draconians we want anyways.

Start-scumming is boring and it worsens a player's record. The random colors aren't so bad that I'd intentionally lose dozens of times to get a specific color.

Quote
There are several combos that are not happening. TSO and green, FE and red or mottled, EE and black, and any pale draconians at all.

Don't play a specialized background. Not all jobs have to be equally viable for a species. And Pale draconians are pretty decent, steam breath is a poor man's fog scroll.

Quote
Also, I'm not convinced Felids are going to be a good addition so far. They seem weaker than Ogres, which is saying something. If I want "stealthy but can't use most weapons and armor", I'll play as a Spriggan. They don't seem to fit any particular niche at all. I suppose if they wind up with the best Traps and Doors skill, that could wind up being useful for them when Traps and Doors gets the ability to make traps out of wands and weapons. On the other hand, if they can't even swing a dagger at all, how do they have the fine motor skills to build a trap and set a dagger into the trap to swing when it's set off? That makes no sense, but then again, neither does a Troll building a trap like that or a Spriggan even being able to life huge boulders up to the ceiling at all, so maybe it doesn't matter.

Felids seem to make good summoners, transmuters, and berserkers.

Draconians were overhauled.

Is it possible to wield a bow or a shield with Blade Hands active?

No.

Crawl is up to something.

D:1, and I just found, >200-ish tunrs in, a Randart with no drawbacks, and everything about it directly helps this Deep Elf Wizard.

Res Cold
+2 Int
+3 Dex

EDIT: And, hey, a potion of Int on D:2.

EDITEDIT: Fuck you, crawl. Sigmund + Fuckton of orcs waiting right next to the stairs in D:4

The RNG giveth, the RNG taketh away.  Blessed be the will of the RNG.

RNG=Xom

Fixed.  :P

While Mr.Scruffy was dominating the Snake Pits for his halfing master he came across a new unique named Mennas.

http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=Mennas

I never seen this guy before, so I summoned a berserk troll and went berserk myself. It should be noted that my kitty berserker has killed stone giants without having to rely on Trog. What happened? Mennas apparently has tons of health and can heal himself while silenced. Mr.Scruffy bites the dust, comes back to life in a safe spot, finishes Mennas off, and eats his own corpse???

Seriously?

I mean... how good are they?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Cats are easy in the early game. I cleared the mines and lair pretty quickly. They're basically small trolls with a Halfing's metabolism and extra lives. They can't wear anything, except jewelry. And they can't wield anything. Cats are pretty frail. I got killed in one hit while at full health early on. It's pretty funny to watch a house cat kill a hydra.

Ok, thanks for the advice; actually I wasn't necessarily thinking of changing back to TSO, but maybe staying with Trog; I am unlikely to make it as far as the branches where TSO is the strongest, and even if I do, I'd rather get a basic win before I start tackling the extra-hard branches like Hell.

Anyway, next questions: Do throwing nets remain useful into the mid - late game, or do high level monsters break free very quickly?

And how does Orb of Destruction compare with Yehudib's Crystal Spear in terms of damage?

Throwing nets are worthless in the end-game. Monsters can either break free in one turn or still attack you while trapped. Lehudib's Crystal Spear is the most powerful single-target conjuration spell in the game. I prefer Iron Shot over both, unless I'm going for 15 runes.

Is there any way to resist banishment and does standard magic resistance help?

I really need to learn that if I go to the elven halls I'm likely to end up in the Abyss.

Banishment can only be resisted by high MR.

I think an amulet of stasis will hold you in place, but the inability to blink is going to kill you.

Stasis doesn't prevent you from getting banished.

@Moron

Okawaru or Elyvilon. Don't mess with Trog. His wrath is brutal and none of his abilities train invocations.

Cool. The DoomRL creator made me an admin at the wiki.

Anyone has experience with player version of the draining effects ?
Neither wiki or bot are giving any formula on the exact hit dice/abilities reduction on a monster.

I know from 1st hand experience that the monster version is plain awesome at crippling my characters :D (going through most of Elven Halls floors while wearing a ring of life protection got my XP (if i trust the 0.52 tables) from 494000 points down to  291500  (level 23 down to level 20), that's 200000 XP drained despite a protection against it.)
but the player version is a big unknown.

Bolt of Draining is almost silent and lowers a monster's HD (by 1, I think). It doesn't work on demons or the undead. Level drain is pretty useful against uniques, but I prefer the weapon brand over the wand or spell. It doesn't reduce the amount of XP you get by much.

Uh... just what is "powered by death"?  I mean, I know I've got it, but...

My DSWn has it. It looks like you regenerate faster if you're near a corpse. Standing near a few corpses makes you heal rapidly. It doesn't seem to do anything if you didn't kill it. Messing with the corpse turns it off and the effect wears off after awhile.

Many necromancer spells say that Kiku appreciates their use, but I don't see any piety gains when I'm nuking things with, for example, bolt of draining - unless I or my minions kill them, anyway. Is the text flavor that was removed/bugged, or does it indirectly increase the piety from kills, if the spell lands the killing blow?

That flavor text is pointless.

Quote
Do enemies dying indirectly (e.g. from traps, falling into deep water, but most especially killing each other or themselves when confused by Mephetic Cloud) provide experience, or is it only if you're directly responsible, e.g. your own attacks, minions, or poison?

You get nothing if you weren't involved. Confusion-related deaths provide experience.

Quote
What sort of spells should I be planning for down deep? I don't imagine my poison and draining spells would be particularly useful against demons.

http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=Table_of_spell_popularity_among_winners

Useful necromancer spells:

Dispel Undead
Simulacrum - Great for Kiku worshippers. Chop up the corpses and wield the chunks to summon loads of ice clones.
Haunt - 2nd best summon spell in the game. Kiku protects you from it's negative effect.
Regeneration
Sublimation of Blood - Fast MP channeling. Use it with chunks only.
Twisted Resurrection - Permanent (large) abominations that can use stairs. Easy to use with Kiku.
Borgnjor's Revivification - Full HP heal for emergencies.

Quote
I imagine Bone Shards is physical damage, will it be sufficient late game? Does the size (weight?) of the skeleton you wield make a difference in its damage?

Bone Shards is useless. Iron Shot or Orb of Destruction (IS > OoD) are good spells for the end-game.

Latest trunk changes:

- Remove +AC/+EV from randarts.
- You can only enchant body armour (robes, leather armours etc.) up to their base AC.

Their reason?

Quote
we feel that everyone has (generally speaking) too much AC

Sometimes I feel Crawl is just way to random. Maybe if shops would buy stuff, and there was a town... I dont know, its probably a design goal that makes sense one way or another, but you gotta admit, sometimes you just dont have a chance against the dice.

Skill matters more than luck in Crawl. I rarely die before reaching the end-game.

Yes, it's too random. I'd like to see many of the overpowered monsters in the first few levels either weakened or moved deeper; eg if orc priests did about 1/3 as much damage with their smiting attack, they'd still be a significant threat, especially against low HP characters, but you would at least have some chance of surviving.

Orc priests are not overpowered. There are plenty of ways to deal with them.

I'd also like to see Mephitic Cloud become less of a 'free pass' through the early game; maybe the duration of confusion should be much lower, and being confused should not make monsters suicidal (they should not be jumping into deep water or lava or attacking themselves.) Then there might be a bit more balance between backgrounds with this spell (currently absurdly easy) and those without (currently absurdly hard.)
I'd rather see it go the other way. Mephitic Cloud is good, but its almost the ONLY way to consistently hit the temple. I'm not saying the other backgrounds are bad, but I think they should be brought up to MC's level, not have MC be nerfed.

There are at least several combos that can reach the lair easily without Mephitic Cloud. Mephitic Cloud was already nerfed in 0.7.

Quick question: does having an amulet of clarity block the "You tend to lose your temper in combat" mutation?

I'd hope so, otherwise this SpEn is in serious trouble :/.

Yes.

Problem:

Your vision is a little blurry.
Your body is slowly deteriorating.

Advice?

Those are minor negative mutations. You don't have to go out of your way to remove them.

wearing that amulet of "resist mutation"? Does the prevent ALL mutations or only negative ones? Because... I could wear that when drinking moar potions of mutation.

All mutations, except from gods, most of the time.

I can't be arsed to figure out the formulae on the wiki, so could someone just tell me if shields on a caster are a good idea? My last two characters (wizard and necromancer) used bucklers, and it seemed to increase my survivability, though it could just be RNG playing tricks on my mind.

Yes. You can use all 3 types of shields on a spell-caster successfully.
