Other Games / Re: Elder scrolls V: Skyrim
« on: January 29, 2011, 04:05:57 am »
I'd like spears. They're not a peasant's weapon, they're a Greek hero's weapon. How many of the Iliad heroes used swords (don't actually answer that question. But I'm pretty sure they all chucked spears around constantly.) In general, I'd like to see a fantasy game that's set in a bronze or iron age period rather than medieval, just to mix things up.

Anyway, gameplay elements aside, the only thing that matters in terms of this game being good (imo) or not is whether the world is immersive. Morrowind was immersive because it was a really alien, original setting. Sure, it borrowed elements from all over the place - the province is sort of a "fantasy version of Palestine" as someone said earlier in the thread, mainly in its history. The setting is so analogous to the time and place of Jesus, its ridiculous - the Dark Elves' mythology even resembles the history as told in the Jewish bible. But they also mixed it up; you have nomads that look like Mongolians, you have ancestor worship as well as polytheistic demon worship and several established religions, you have Sumerian-like names, you have lava-flow canyons that serve the same geographical and logistical function as river valleys, and oh yeah, you have giant bugshells used as building materials and huge mushroom towers, and the Dwemer and Daedric architecture ain't bad either.

So go ahead and make Skyrim look like Norway or Alaska, but for Chrissake make it as bizarre and unearthly as Morrowind at the same time.

Then the other thing is to have a background and world that's as deep and complex as Morrowind. Just like in real life, you hear multiple different versions of past events and nobody's version is ever shown to be authoritative. The religious history might well be mythology and the prophecies could well be self-fulfilling. There's no established good guys and bad guys and everyone's motives are illuminated by their version of past events. And, there's tons of weird political and cultural nuances that are mentioned in passing and detailed in in-game books, that make the game world seem like it could be a real place in terms of its complexity and depth. Oblivion didn't have any of that (and that's all I'll say about Oblivion). But basically, those two things are the reason I still like playing Morrowind 9 years later and if attention is paid to them, Skyrim could potentially be the same kind of experience. It probably won't, but hey.

Oh yeah, the other great thing about Morrowind is how fun exploring was. That was probably the majority of the fun in the game - running around the wilderness, finding cool things, and the wilderness was actually packed with them.

It's not that it's "past its prime," it's just that he hasn't updated in a couple years. But the existing body of work is still far superior to any other webcomic, just like Calvin and Hobbes is the undisputed best newspaper comic ever even though its run is over.

Anyway I was too sleepy to think of a real proposal. In retrospect, I would have proposed some kind of clarification regarding whether people can edit posts or not, or whether they can retract their proposals.

Too much hassle? Select one word and click one button? Like 3 seconds' time? Damn, people are lazy those days...

I am tbh...it's small things like that though, that add up to annoyance, especially when basically the same effect could be achieved by (much easier) capitalization.

Anyway, PROPOSAL: The Perry Bible Fellowship shall be the official webcomic of this Nomic. pbfcomics.com

Also, if the red and green rule passes I probably will stop playing on account of it being too much trouble to do, and I doubt I'm the only one...

Guys please don't vote for anything except the rule 6 amendment because otherwise things are going to keep chugging along at a snail's pace forever

Let's try this again...

>Proposal: Rule 6 will be altered to say: "6.01. At the end of the turn, any proposed rule changes that have been voted on and have been found to have a majority of support by those votes will be implemented."

This will ensure that the disagree votes count, too. In other words, if a proposal has two supporting votes and one disagreeing vote, it will still be implemented, regardless of how many other proposals have been implemented in the same turn.

SUPPORT

Otherwise, obviously, nothing will ever really change.

Proposal:All support shall be in green, and all negative vote in red.

DISAGREE. Way too much of a PITA, and capitalization makes them just as easily noticeable.

I would like to propose that any player who proposes a rule that no one supports loses the game and is unable to propose new rules or support or disagree with proposed rules for the rest of the game.

DISAGREE. Kicking people out is stupid

I *PROPOSE* that each proposition need to be presented alongside a lol cat or a similarly stupid image.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

DISAGREE
Proposal: Any player not respecting the rules shall be expelled from the game and won't be able to *PROPOSE*, *SUPPORT* or *DISAGREE* with it. Henceforth, he shall be referred to as "That other asshole".

SUPPORT

*Proposal* Any proposals related to 4chan are strictly forbidden and are ignored from the proposal pool

DISAGREE, only because how are we supposed to determine what is "related" to 4 chan?

Each player can propose at the most one rule per turn. That rule automatically get the support from the player proposing it.

SUPPORT

I thought it was kind of dumb that none of the proposals were counted as having support from the person who proposed them. It's implied and makes sense, but obviously it has to be specified.

Also I'm going to again propose:

PROPOSAL:
Modify Rule 6 to read as follows:
All proposals which at the end of a turn have a greater number of supporters than disagreers shall be adopted.

And I SUPPORT this proposal.

I too thought this was going to be about building a water and pressure-plate powered Game of Life IN-GAME. My God would that be epic.

Anyway, I was just watching the Planet Earth episode on jungles today and omg, I want to embark in one. The DF jungles just don't seem that epic since instead of massively tall trees and a canopy it's really just the occasional (not even all that dense) tree tile.

Proposal: If a person receives four or more elephants, rules they proposed shall be removed from the rule list at a rate of 1 rule for 4 elephants, and 1 rule for each additional elephant.

SUPPORT like whoa

Paradoxes are fun, and don't need retroactivity. Normal rule additions can create paradoxes as well.

I PROPOSE: Anyone who, on purpose or by accident, creates a paradox by having his/her proposal accepted, whether it is retroactive or not, automatically loses and the offending rule is rendered null and void.

Fun stuff: if someone proposes a paradox we can make him lose by all voting for it. ;)

DISAGREE

PROPOSAL: If the adopting of a proposal creates a paradox, all players receive three (5) elephants.

PROPOSAL: No Rules Shall Be Retroactive.

DISAGREE

Also, it does indeed appear that the current wording means disagreeing doesn't matter; it's just the two proposals with the most "support" votes win, so abstaining is just as good as disagreeing.

PROPOSAL: all vote posts must quote the proposal being voted on.

Strongly DISAGREE. It will be much more interesting if there can be retroactive changes...

I'd like to DISAGREE with this. I think if there's a tie for second place, all those proposals should be adopted. It helps that two of the tied proposals are mine...

PROPOSAL: As long as the system is in effect that the top two proposals are adopted, the following guidelines should govern adoption:

-If there is a tie for first place, ALL tied proposals will be adopted. Any proposals having received less votes will be discarded.
-If there is a clear winner but a tie for second place, all proposals tied for second place shall be adopted.
-This ruling, if adopted, shall be retroactive to round 1, and if approved, those proposals will go into effect along with this one at the start of round 3.
*DISAGREE* with the third part, and thus the whole proposal, especially because it would cause the addition of a rule that would in turn require the addition of a player list and far more complexity. How do you discover a majority unless everyone votes on everything, and you know who didn't vote at all? Besides, that would turn it into a long, complex, and common nomic, rather than the quick, fun, and unique one we have now.

The main reason for the third provision was that I wanted some of my previous proposals that tied for second place to be adopted.

But what's so complex about the rest of it? It's totally straightforward. There's no need for a player list or for counting absentions - it's exactly the same as before where the ones with the most supporting votes get adopted, except that now if there's a tie those can also get adopted.

its really nice, but i see that he is selling prints based on a derivative work of someone else's intelectual property.  surely Mr. Denee should know better.

This. However, the comic is friggin awesome. Just wish it was longer.
