DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Starting builds?
« on: August 02, 2010, 03:17:28 am »
You might want to consider bringing along at least one "bodyguard" dwarf with a weapon, fighting skills and maybe some armor. Especially if you plan on breaching the caverns early. BAD THINGS come out of the caverns. All my recent forts have gotten ended early when something nasty went on the rampage and ate half the total limbs of the dwarves in my fort.

I used to loooooooove 2v2 fort mode in WWP. One fort (the townhouse) was clearly superior but even if the other person didn't pick it it was still a fun game.

It got kind of stupid after a while when it became impossible to find any game to join that wasn't a "propa" or "shoppa" or some other arcane variation that took l33t skillz to play.

It gets Toady in under 20 questions whenever I try him.

I wonder how much different it is than Armageddon/World Party?

I sure did have a lot of fun with these games back in the day!

It gets some real crazy ones. Rapunzel for example - I expected it to get that one easy but it took 3 tries. The whole time it was asking the wrong kinds of very-specific questions and I didn't think it had enough info to narrow it down, but then boom!

Right now I'm trying to see if it knows of the @ from Roguelike games....nope, looks like it doesn't. I've entered the character as "The @" (Roguelikes)

It's having trouble recognizing a character as ill-defined as the @. It keeps guessing other RPG protagonists like "The protagonist of Dragon Age" and "The Nerevarine."

General Discussion / Re: Koran burning in Florida...

There's no "partial" Qur'an.

And yeah, I'd say the best course of action would be to buy a bunch of Arabic Bibles, bring them in a stack, start tossing them on the fire and then halfway through, be like, yo guys, guess what these books are you're burning? After all, I doubt a bunch of Florida rednecks could tell this:

I think you're pretty much stuck designating one level at a time. If there's a way around it I'd love to know too, but I'm 99% sure

I don't know any animes except Spirited Away...

In any case, I'm having mixed success beating it with non-mainstream celebrities, scientists and historical figures.

I'm trying to think of more people from Africa but, and I'm ashamed to say this, I can't think of any besides Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu and Haile Selassie (well, not sub-Saharan Africa). Doesn't help that I'm tired as hell today (no I'm not African...well, any more than all humans are since we evolved there)

And yes I'm addicted. Might as well have linked me to tvtropes.

Technically, there's no such thing as Muslim missionaries, because proselytizing is supposed to be forbidden.
Huh? That's a new one on me...

Oh this bastard genie

It got Genghis Khan (I guess not that hard) and Kronk from The Emperor's New Groove, but didn't get Alexandria from The Fall. Fairly obscure movie, I guess that helps.

He couldn't get Julian the Apostate. He guessed Marcus Aurelius, Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great in that order. To be fair, Julian admired Marcus Aurelius and thought he was Alexander the Great reincarnated. On that note, he couldn't get Gore Vidal either.

Hm, I overestimated this thing quite a bit. I'm sure if I used all anime characters it could nail 'em every time, because the third question is usually "is the character from Japan" or "is the character from an animated cartoon?"

We'd like to send missionaries to muslim countries, but you know, most people get arrested or killed for attempting to spread Christianity in those countries.

That's funny, I know people who are missionaries in Muslim countries and none of those things ever happened to them

DF Modding / Re: Dystopian Rhetoric (or other) graphics sets in 2010?

Hm. While I'd like to go back to that tileset, I'd still like to keep the diagonal walls that are in the Mayday set. Given that I have no clue how this stuff works, is there any way I could set this up myself without being even a Dabbling Programmer?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Elves want me to limit tree-cutting
« on: July 30, 2010, 08:43:28 am »
So the elf caravan came and they asked me to stop cutting down so many tree. I agree because I don't want to make enemies since I don't have an army or particularly good fortifications.

Hoooo boy, do you have a lot to learn young one.

Also, this is DF2010. No need for complicated magma/drowning chambers, just order your military to hack 'em to bits.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Finally! Death by tantrum spiral!
« on: July 30, 2010, 08:05:29 am »
I've still never had a tantrum spiral. Could be that I always crack down on idlers and give dwarves no time to socialize...anyway, the worst that's happened to me from a tantrum is a woodcutter decapitated another dwarf and carved up a guard dog. That fort only ended because the starting 7 all went melancholy from losing some of their number and then the remaining 2 weren't able to hold off the cavern monsters next time some appeared.

Why blame this one guy? If anything, blame the consumers. If mainstream games are becoming bad, it's the fault of consumers who are willing to buy them. If people cared, they would stop buying those games in favor of better ones. Supply will meet demand.

In any case I don't view the games industry as being much different than the music industry. Yeah, most people listen to bad, generic pop music. There's still a sizeable niche for good music that often goes under the radar, and just because that stuff doesn't get played on the radio much, it doesn't mean the niche is going to go away. Same thing with games - remember what forum we're all posting on? Sure Dwarf Fortress is never going to be popular or mainstream the way Halo or WOW are. But there's still obviously a market for it.

Of course, as with music, the mainstream isn't all bad either. But just play/listen to what you like and don't stress out over the fact that the most well-known media aren't to your taste.
