DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: D.C. - Capital of the Dwarven Republic - Megaproject

I live in DC and whole heartedly support this endeavor! This is going to really be a mega project though, many of these buildings are HUGE. I await the finished project eagerly.

Ah true, or if they are suddenly startled by a forgotten beast z + 1 above ground perhaps they will forget about falling as well?

If the skills a dwarf can learn are not capped, is it possible for Dwarves to become such expert dodgers to be able to fall and miss the ground completely? Think of the ease at which you could build great walls! The amount of pigtail socks that would rain from on high! The number of goblins carried over volcanoes, the possibilities are endless. Some day, some day....

She was attacked by and entire siege of goblin archers. The trail of blood that she left when rescued was 4 tiles wide. She died in the arms of the doctor as he was moving her to surgery. =(

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Underwater ice volcano
« on: June 22, 2010, 10:24:39 pm »
Now with pictures!
Here is an overview of the entire ocean draining into the volcano. It has been going for around half an hour now at about 2 fps and it isn't capping totally yet. A whole z level of the 3 deep ocean has been drained and it is working on the others. When it settles down totally I will upload the save.
Overview of entire ocean
!Danger! large image ~1mb
The inside of the volcano is just a huge waterfall rushing into the magma sea with a huge mixture of steam/magma mist/obsidian blocks falling downwards.
Inside the magmatube
Edit: Here is the save,
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=0R2NSDDK
took all night before it settled down. Almost the entire lave tube is filled with water with ice on top. If you turn off temperature for a while, floor it off, and pump out the water you will have the most epic underwater volcano base ever. I have started to preform this, but the lag! And with a smaller embark region I was unable to get any supplies =/.
I just noticed that my fortress name is appropriately "Basement Quake"

What happens when the ice melts is cataclysmic lag followed by a bit less lag followed by a capped volcano. =D
The effect of the water rushing in and turning into steam is quite awesome, but it gets me to about 2 fps. =/
Edit: Just trapped my dwarves under the surface of the ocean. The ocean melts during mid spring, it took about 10 mins of my computer chugging on the melting ice before simulation started again.

I just created a world and was amazed to find a volcano under the ice of a frozen ocean =O. The only downside is that the volcano is in the very bottom left of the region tile and the closest land is far away. But anyways here is the worldgen info as well as some screen shots.
I have not played it through till high summer, but it says that it is in a temperate region so perhaps the ocean will melt and cause extreme lag/awesome.
The actual embark site is a 3 level thick ice sheet with a volcano at the bottom lefthand corner of the map. There is a huge hole over the top and the sides are just ice until the rim of the volcano.
I think it is time for a sub oceanic base?
(tileset is mayday)

Went to the museum of natural history and attempted to find rocks that I now know about because of dwarf fortress. Here is a lovely picture of some microcline.

DF Suggestions / Pump power levels.
« on: June 21, 2010, 12:50:41 am »
I looked through the other threads about adding mechanisms/hydraulics etc but have not found something exactly like this so here goes.
Instead of having a pump simply be able to move water from level n to n + 1 you could have a setting on the pump for pressure, or levels to move the liquid up. Now this may be problematic as I believe there was an issue with volcanoes causing enormous fluid calculation lag if the area in which the fluid moved was not perfectly smooth (hence why they are the same shape all the way down), but having the caveat of a straight shaft above the output tile is a minor inconvenience. This could be either solved by having no twists/turns between output tile and location the water is pumped too, or some sort of connection that must be added to the business end of the pump and then piped to the output location.
For each Z level of pressure that the pump moves the liquid you could have it draw more power, or depending on what it is pumping draw more or less power (magma heavier than water etc). This functionality would also seem to be more true to actual fluids being pushed rather than just flowing to the lowest spot. This would also allow the current pump design to function normally as you can just set the "pressure" value to 1 or the same Z level that the pump operates on.
If each tile of water has a pressure value associated with a Z level then the pump could just change whatever water is passed through it to a higher z-level of pressure. I am sure it is not that simple, or even if my understanding of fluids in DF is accurate, but just a feature that I thought would add a lot of interesting dynamics/more realism to the game as well as be relatively easy to add in without creating totally new objects.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

A giantess was my first real threat since embarking 3 years ago. The first creatures to be obliterated were my war dogs tied in front of the entrance. They were struck so hard that they were ripped from their chains flung into my stairwell, and exploded into gore on my miners.
At this point I initiated the magma trap that dumps into my entrance, but the giantess was standing on the bridge and it would not raise to lock her away and the magma had not filled the entire chamber yet. I sent in 6 dwarves with no armor but quality battle axes and one dwarf with a legendary steel spear to keep her from entering the corridor that led to my main stairway.
I thought that they were going to be slaughtered, but someone actually severed the torso of the giantess in one blow. Turns out it was the legendary weapon wielding dwarf. How he managed to sever an entire giant torso with a spear I will never know.
Now i have half a giant in my entrance that is smoldering and my speardwarf is covered in giant blood.

Hey there everyone,
been lurking for about a month now after finding out about dwarf fortress. Thought I would share some of the silly things that my engraver has been doing.
One of the first engravings my legendary engraver did,
He has been consistently producing images of geometric shapes in my dining hall for nearly half a season. =/
EDIT: He also drew a circle and "two waves" all masterfully done, yet my fortress is nowhere near and ocean. I would like to believe that it is simply some squiggles ~ ~
