Yay stick slaughter!

Mid Spring

The first thing I've ordered to be done was the construction of a rudimentary meeting area that actually provides a roof above our heads.

I've given the orders to mass produce beds, tables, chairs, doors, and also a few coffins for those few unfortunate ghosts.
The masonry industries are expanded and a basic mechanics workshop is set up so that we can have a few mechanisms for future use. A basic dormitory is also set up so that we at least won't have to sleep on the ground anymore.

Mid Spring 2
A caravan of Elven origin has arrived

Usually I'd refuse trade with such creatures, but given the current underdeveloped situation of the fort, we're going to need all the help we can get.
In exchange for some beer and longland flour, I've traded off all of our bronze and iron armor.
I've also managed to land a sweet deal when they've handed over a giant tiger cage and a honey badger cage in exchange for two superior quality bronze gauntlets and a dozen exceptional quality floor hatches (Armok knows why the previous leader made so many)

The Elven traders say that I couldn't get a better price anywhere else, but somehow I get the feeling that I was slightly ripped off.
Maybe it has to do with the fact that I have absolutely no idea how things are priced.

Ah well, least we got what we need. Now time to move on to what I actually want.

Early Spring 2

Arrived at last!

While I'm aware that this is merely a first year fort, it looks as if they've barely began setting stuff up.

Either this is a new species of dwarves who just really like the outside sun, or there's something really wrong going on when everyone's forced to linger on the grass and muck.

Taking a quick peek into the halls...

I see absolutely nothing.

No rooms, no statues, no decorations,
not even a chair or a table or even anything resembling a dining hall save for a pair of ghosts lingering outside the walls moaning their drab grim wail of a song.

And worst of all, not a single bed to be found in this entire rabbit hole of a fort save that one bed already taken and engraved for that oh so amazing expedition leader.

But I do have to say,
That's an nice river they've got there,

Shame if nothing were to happen to it.

Oh don't worry I'm not gonna screw anything over. I already did that before.
It's just that the map has such a nice river capable of so many different things that it would be a shame to let it go to waste.

Early Spring

Today, my dwarves and I have come to this fort in search of a better life. Our journey was long and our treks were tiring, but we have made it at last.
Word was that this was a relatively new fort with an abundance of resources, plenty of new opportunities, and best of all, no mandatory military conscription required. I still remember all of those painful years back at the ceilingchew fort where conscripted militia dwarves died by the dozen as they were helplessly sent outside to fight against the goblin scum. None of us could rest well knowning that any one of us could be conscripted at any time to fight against cruel fate and death, but if the rumors were true, this would be a different fort, a fort without tyranny, oppression, or fear; a fort without a military.

Useful article, but it doesn't seem like that's the problem.
The corrupted save has 846 items while dhokarena56's save has only 376 items (and its about 14 mb smaller, which raises the question on why GreatWyrmGold's save is so ridiculously huge for a DF file)

Just in case that really was the problem, I've checked if there were any missing files by transferring dhokarena's save files into GreatWyrmGold's save files, although nothing was missing (and the game still doesn't work).

So yea I'll just be going with dhokarena56's file.

edit: A bit concerned about fps issues here.
Only 20 dwarves, but I already have less than 50 fps.
I suspect its the fault of that massive river.
I wish there was a way to dam up everything.
I've blocked off smaller streams before with pumps, but never one this big.

Hmm... maybe I should spend the turn trying to find a way to do so.
It'd certainly give all of those miners and masons something to do.

Darned be it, I can't get the save to work at all.
I redownloaded, unzipped and retried it, didn't work
Tried downloading it from a different computer and using the save there, but didn't work either.
Tried putting on my proxies and downloading it (Great firewall of China has been known to do weird stuff), but it just doesn't work.

Every time I try the game just freezes and I get a giant white box in the middle of everything.
Sorry, GreatWyrmGold, but I'm going to just go along with dhokarena56's save.

p.s I was actually quite looking forward to checking out how your river death trap thing worked, but the file just doesn't work.

158
Bump for great Reginald!

159
I'm more confused at whether I should go with GreatWyrmGold's save or the save before that one.
Also redownloading file just in case it was a downloading error.

160
Ouch, magma flood. :o
It's a good thing that magma isn't self pressurized like water, otherwise the reserve magma tanks to the right would empty their load as well into a giant room full of useless 3/7 magma.
Remember that the mechanisms used for the floodgates must also be magma proof too, not just the floodgate itself.
I may have used up most of the magma proof ones though in my construction of the pump.

161
He did upload it to DFFD
thing is when I downloaded and tried out the save, DF crashed.
Also it was a folder that I downloaded and not a .rar or a .zip

162
mind posting a pic on how you fixed up the pumps?
the maintenance stairways aren't supposed to flood with magma.

163
So should I start with that save?

edit: if that's your save for the game, can you reupload it on to a different website?
The version I downloaded was corrupted.

164
Nothing like an annoying computer virus and misplacing your flash drive to delay the succession game!  ::)
-_-

still patiently waiting for my turn

Early Spring

It has been an eventful year indeed.

3 goblin sieges and a goblin ambush.
Dozens dead, but nothing grave or severe.
And most important of all,
We now have surface Magma

(yes that's a river at the bottom left)

I've never really wrote anything about the last goblin siege since compared to the second one during fall, it was rather pitiful, but it did leave behind a few prisoners that we still have to take care of.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
(in the picture lies the many corpses of goblins as well as two still somewhat alive goblin swordsmen and a goblin lasher)

But that shouldn't be too difficult to take care of.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

All we need to do is just to dump in a few roomfuls of goblin cleanser.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

They may run...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But they can't hide

Nothing beats the lovely smell of roast goblin in the morning
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And there you have it, a perfect pit for cooking our prisoners in.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Building the magma pump has been quite a strenuous task for me, so I'll just resign my position as overseer (although I would still like to keep my noble position) and retire wealthy and lazy.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

P.S a note for future overseers. There's a slight flaw in the designs of the magma pump which has resulted in part of the magma-pump breaking down once I've turned it off.
I've noted the location where the flaw occurred as well as giving a few basic instructions on how to get the thing working again, so until someone else manages to fix it, it would be wise to be a bit more frugal in our consumption of magma.

edit: I also forgot to thank whoever went through the trouble of designing that 7k urist riverside powersource. Certainly saved me a lot of work with a ready built power generator at hand.

Next Save here.
