Oh nevermind I see it now

Hey wait a sec, where was the T-rex again?
When I took a closer look at the T-rex everyone was talking about, I saw that it was actually...

edit: grammar mistake
edit2: now I know that was the wrong forgotten beast in a box

303
Sweeeeet.

304
That's an awful lot of dwarves to individually look at.
I like your narration AnimaRytak, fairly simple and not too difficult to read yet provides a nice scope of all the important stuff happening.
Are we still expanding our base in hell?

Mini Story
Quote
Gather around boys and girls, and sit near the magma furnace where it is warm. Today I will tell you the story of Erush Orsharshorast, the ghostly trading guardian of this fort.

Ever notice that mysterious white figure in front of the gates?

Nobody knew when or where or how she died. Some say she was caught underneath a mining accident. Some say she was one of the victims of the great dining room drowning incident. But most believe that she was one of the merchants of gold and jewels until cruel fate turned the tables on her when she found herself caught outside during a goblin siege where she had her body devoured whole by the foul creatures of the dark.

Either way, her body was never found, and so she stands there, keeping watch of all the dwarves and merchants that come through so that no one else will have to suffer the same fate as she.

Many ambushes have been foiled by her presence, and many a petty thief have been caught by her guard.

Though her disembodied existence is unable to fight, her mere appearance has scared off more intruders than even the most fearsome beasts while morally supporting the dwarves she watches over.

Siege after siege, she stands there unmoving whether through rain or snow or sleet or hail.

She is Erush, and he is the one who watches our gates every night so that you and I can rest peacefully.

So you run in groups?
Well that's good.

It might not seem like much, but there's a little trick to lower your time by a few seconds (every little bit helps!).
Find a guy who runs at relatively the same pace as you and when you all start running, just tail right behind that guy. (not in front or to the side, but just right behind as if you were following him)
Your body will experience slightly less air resistance as the guy in front is the one pushing all the wind aside. This trick usually works better with faster paced races such as racecars and biking, but it also has a minor effect on running.

Feel free to switch to different people while running if you think the person in front is running too fast or too slow.

And enjoy running! (or at least try to not think of it as some killer activity invented by Satan and unleashed upon the world by his demonic coaching underlings...)

Running usually gets a lot less tedious the more you do it.

Think of it this way.

In Real Life:
People pre-judge you based on your physical age.

On the Internet:
People pre-judge you based on your mental age.

For breathing, as simple and obvious as it sounds, I always find it helps to spend 20 or so seconds before running to just breath in and out really deeply and slowly. It cuts down greatly on how much burn you feel in your lungs when you get to your first quarter mile.

Now this might work differently for different runners, but whenever I go long distance, I always try to run and breathe in this pattern.

"half-breath in" *step*
"half-breath in" *step*
"Breathe out" *step* step*

"half-breath in" *step*
"half-breath in" *step*
"Breathe out" *step* step*

Breathe in through your mouth, but breathe out through your nose.

The hardest part of medium-long distance running isn't always the end, but often the middle part once you use up all the extra oxygen reserves in your blood (thus why I do pre-running breathing) and you haven't yet stabilized your pace and oxygen intake (but which can be easier to establish if you get your breathing in sync with your body).

Information Source: My dad who was fat and overweight during childhood, but who eventually became the third best 1500 meter runner in his college.
He was my inspiration for taking on medium-long distance running and under his advice I managed to jog my first mile in one go at the age of 7 (albeit rather slowly).

edit: A little question, when you take the test, do you run in groups or run solo?

Deathgate

Not quite there yet, but it is possibly the first succession game in all of DF history fort to breach hell, and survive long enough to colonize it.
Keep an eye on that succession game.

Yeah, and I didn't even realize it until I noticed that the announcement section kept on spewing death reports at me.

The lever was named something along the lines of *raise the bridge at the northwest* so I was completely caught off guard especially after all of those dud levers.

edit: As awesome as it was, it wasn't quite destructive or fort-shaking enough imo.
I've got something else planned that is much much more awesome than a zoo of wild animals.

 :)*grins evilly*:)

Dangerous as that forgotten beast seemed at first, the military took care of it with ease.

A nearby craftsdwarf happened to get caught in the fray and was gored to death by the creature, but a nearby marksdwarf managed to pummel the creature into submission with his bismuth bronze crossbow before he got out of hand.

I was expecting there to be more of a fight, but at least it was interesting to watch.

Late Summer

Oh my armok…

What in the world just happened?

One moment ago, all the animals were in their cages, nice and safe from the extremities of the outside world.
Next thing I know, I hear a loud *CREEEEAAAAAK* followed by the chaotic cries of dwarves and animals as 16 cages simultaneously open themselves.

Beak wolf hunters (they look like giant ugly wingless birds), goblins, rhesus macaques, and a massive minotaur all come stampeding about in the zoo now gone crazy.

A trio of dwarves also happened to be inside on break and the moment they sensed something wrong, they dashed behind the nearest door and locked it behind themselves.

Unfortunately, one of the dwarves must have been a bit too slow since before she managed to reach the safety of the other room, she found herself flying as an angry 800 pound bull-man hybrid collided with the poor girl.

Luckily, the minotaur decided that the beak wolf hunters and goblins were more interesting than chasing after a couple of booze beards, and so the zoo then engaged in a most spectacular free-for-all brawl.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Though the beak wolf hunters were many, the minotaur flung them aside one at a time like chickens.

A goblin crossbowman feeling that the commotion was invading his personal space decided to take a potshot at the giant bull creature, but missed and only alerted the Minotaur of his presence.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Needless to say, massive death via  ({giant cave spider silk sock}) ensued.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

(no really, the combat reports go on for at least 7-8 pages with the exact same lines.

...

Fearing that the minotaur would become too powerful from all of his easy kills, I sent the military to finish him off.
One of the soldiers slashes off the minotaur’s left arm and sends it flying.

The now bleeding minotaur tries to run off, but only meets a miserable end as another soldier kicks him in the head and ends his miserable life.

And it was all because I just happened to pull that extra lever right by the training room...

Absolutely ridiculous.

So where's the circus?

313
Man I am just loving this.
Have any of the animals miraculously survived?
Are the walls at least completely painted red now?
And will we actually use these body parts for food?

314
All i have to say is that every fort update post sounds really hyper. :/

315
I just want to see them all go splash.
To prevent miasma problems, you could also dig out the ground above the drop chute so that hell will see the first rays of surface light.
