DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The DF2010 Little Questions Thread
« on: April 15, 2011, 01:01:57 pm »
I guess it's time for some science, will report back once done.

Small scale test shows water stable at 2/7. Pretty good. I'll try larger scale.
I'm starting to think this might have a lot to do with the length of the tunnel I have the water flow through. The further in the input tunnel the lower the water level. Weird.

w00t got it to a stable 3/7, exactly what I wanted. All I can conclude is that the water flow through a channel depends largely on the length and width of the channel, flowtrhough being slower the longer it is, and faster the wider it is.
Weird I thought it would just flow on a universal waterlevel throughout the channel, instead of 6/7 at the entrance and only 2/7 at the exit. Looks like water acts more like a viscous liquid in DF instead of a smooth flowing non viscous liquid. Water isn't disappearing so I gues it needs really high pressure to move it forward.

Question about water flow. I want to improve my dwarven bath house design.

If I were to fill a room to 3/7, then make sure it is connected to another body of water downwards, however blocked by a floodgate. Above the bathouse I would have another body of water blocked by a floodgate, wich would make a fine waterfall in the middle of the bath for mist generation. Both the waterfall watersource and the drainage in the lower body of water would be equal in size. (say theoritically one tile)

If I were to open both floodgate simeltaniously, would the water level in the bath remain roughly at 3/7? I'm not talking about fluctuations from the water spreading out and draining out, I mean would total drainage by equal to total input?

I roughly know how water pressure works so I should be able to manage the waterpressure precisely so that the source is one level up and the drain one level down. Naturally I'll be working with grates, wether it will be wall grates or floor grates I don't know, ideally I'd use wall grates but I know they have a bug that causes flow to push creatures through them.

I'll make a rough sketch of what I had in mind.

That's what I hate about reclaiming. My dwarves are so busy hauling random stuff, they forget to haul the important stuff. Some of them are starving, but they wouldn't think of hauling the food from the butchershop to an empty barrel before it rots instead of hauling a piece of cave spider silk cloth.

Had to reclaim my fortress after a forgotten beast made three of my dwarves rot alive wich caused a tantrum spiral. Such a shame I was about to get my crundles to hatch 30 younglings.

Reclaimed and running everything on 200 fps so the mind numbeningly boring proces of dwarves grabbing every reclaimed item strewn around and bringing it back to the stockpile doesn't take to long.

On the bright side some exciting things were happening to, as I caught another herd of elk bird and have again begun breeding. Saw some rutherers for the first time, sadly not at the right place to capture them. They seem interesting with a value multiplier of 3. Still I'd prefer to catch some draltha.

I never quite realized I made so much cave spider silk cloth. Oh well can't let it just lie around.

Also a giant olm came by and I had my hammerdwarf smash it with his silver hammer, joy. :)

Lastly two flesh balls came along. First time seeing one of these as well. I promptly read the wiki to know what I'm up against. Sounds like I'm going to make an improved version of the danger room, but then with flesh ball target dummies :D

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Rotten dwarves

Oh dear.
Well the medic did everything he could. Eventually all three dwarves stepped out the hospital and went about their normal lives. Sadly it seems they still had rotten body parts that needed treatment but they would have none of it.
The first dwarf died now, granted he was the one that had to wait the longest for treatment. Still it's looking bleak for the other two. Atleast they're not spreading miasma.

There goes another one. At least the last rotted dwarfs lover was also present at the battle and will likely follow her fiance's fate very soon. Such tragedy.

Yup there she goes. Accursed forgotten beast...

Oh so doctors can actually help these kind of condition? I guess I'll set up a makeshift hospital then. I don't have a particularly experienced medical dwarf though, but it's better then nothing.

I shall make soap out of the cursed beast own tallow I will!

Okay the newly apointed medical dwarf is now removing the rotten tissue. Problem is their entire body is rotten so I hope there's something left once he's done.

Hey, I had my first run in with a forgotten beast with not such a pleasant extract. Apparently the thing breathed two nasty substances that firstly made a dwarf swell and lose blood all over his body, and secondly instantly start to rot.
The damn beast was hard to kill to, but I got it in the end. Now the first thing I did was have my three militia members immediatly cleansed with water. I'm fairly sure I have the extract situation udner controle as soon as it's cleaned off the walls of my makeshift bath.

However now I have three dwarves running around with a rotten body, spreading miasma where they go. The swelling has healed so far, but I'm really concerned about the rotting.
If the dwarves have no more contact with this accursed extract, would I be to optimistic to hope that they might survive this? Would they heal, or just remain walking corpses forever, or eventually die?

My latest fortress got cut short by a forgotten beast. It's a huge newt with poison exract and boiling vapors and whatnot. This is the strongest fucker I have ever seen in this game. I fought dragons bronze colossus and hordes of forgotten beasts. My last fortress had about 12 dead forgotten beasts lying around.

But this newt man, he just destroyes my entire militia with ease, runs around with a trail of his blood his wounds covering an entire screen and he just keeps on killing. Worst part is even if my militia could kill him they're all dead as they instantly start to rot with any exposure to the forgotten beasts extract attacks. I couldn't even see the fight due to all the miasma.

I lmight just savescum to a previous seasonal save, this thing is just rediculous. I truly do hate it. I've fought a lot of forgotten beasts and megabeasts and titans but this  thing....

Okay so I have a crundle hatchery and elk bird hatchery set up now.
I'm curious for the eggs now. Firstly is there any difference between the eggs of different creatures. For example would the elk birds have larger and more feeding eggs then say my crundles, or do they have the same nutritional value. Secondly do they have different value multiplier to the meal  they are cooked in.

My crundle just claimed a nest box and plopped down 19!! eggs. If the eggs are all the same this seems like a very good source of food compared to my elk bird who only yielded 5 eggs last time.

Oh god I'm loving this new fortress. Incredible map layout and it's off for an amazing start.
First my elk bird breeding program was succesful, now I just got a wave of migrants (in this case it was a good thing, I sorely needed more haulers and several professionals).
Now just as the last migrant wave came a group of crundle entered from my fortress entrance edge of the map. I had the place covered in cage traps, and then one of my dwarves decide it's a good idea to go fetch a single caged crundle in midst of a large pack of 15 uncaged of them beasties.
The herd exploded, I thought my dwarf was done for but they all panicked and half of them ran into the cage traps. The other half scattered throughout the fortress, and as a genuine fortress holiday I had everyone drafted in the military and chase down crundles. It was like looking for easter eggs, except it involved a lot of blood and claws vs hammers action . It was awesome!
Wild crundles are turning into my n1 source of meat right now. If only I could find a use for the scales.

Anyway, now I have a whole bunch of crundles caged and I'm not sure what to do with them. Personally I love reptiles and they seem like perfect pets. What do you think I should do with them?

Oh yes now I remember that was when I pumped it to 4/7 to see what would happen.

Also w00t the eggs hatched, and the mother is alive. So to anyone wondering the same yes the birds do reproduce in a natural way.
She went straight to laying more eggs, I guess I'll need to stop her right there as she really should get some food now.

My previous fortress had a lot of succes in that matter (the one in the sig). Basicly I made a 3/7 filled dwarven bath house, turned it into a meeting hall so that idle dwarves would occasionally take a dip.
Removed all the filth and grime and gave them some skills in swimming if I recall. Or was that when I forced them to go into 4/7...I'm not sure.

I only have one so far. I'm only half a year in the embark and the second female bird that came along managed to slip away.
