Hiya

Just posting in this thread because I had to abandon my first succesful fort because of FPS.

Anyway, I've been gathering bits of advice to increase the FPS in my fort. So far turning off temp and weather has done nearly nothing. Making traffic areas have helped a little bit but not much.

Then I read you guys talking about spiral ramps instead of straircases. So I did away with my current staircase (you can see it in my sig) and replaced it with a spiraling ramp.
My fps jumped from an average 10 to 20. Amazing.

So yes spiraling ramps instead of stacking stairs, it helps a whole lot.

Next up removing the hundred goblin remains along with the clothes and armor they brought. Can't have it scattered around outside, to the semi molten rock with it!

Edt: I realize I left out ten layers between ground level and the entrance, so the staircase is a lot longer then in the map vieuwer

Confirming that the created obsidian does stick to wichever wall it's next to.
It's perfectly possible to encase the adamantine in obsidian if you can get the water there afaik.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The DF2010 Little Questions Thread
« on: August 11, 2010, 11:42:52 am »
Ok I've got  a little question:

I've been toying around with an arena with as main combatant my pet hydra.
He doesn't do badly although considering his size his combat prowess is quite pitiful, but atleast the fights are long and with lots of gore.

Recently however I put him against an ogre woodcutter, he had something called a greataxe or something. 't was quite a big axe.
Long story short the hydra survived but with a gruesome amount of injuries.

The two worst injuries are the following: he skull and brain sixth head is broken (broken brain  :o) and his head and neck first head is gone.
It is quite unusual for a creature to run around with a broken brain and a decapicated head, but he has five more working heads so no biggy.

Anyway, in mythology hydras are known to regenrate lost bodyparts. Specificly whenever you would cut off it's head a new one would grow back (grow back double according to some myths?) and I was wondering wether this will happen in DF.
So, will he be back to his healthy self at some point or is he doomed to run around with only five working heads?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Farming makes no sense to me.Could YOU help?
« on: August 11, 2010, 08:28:42 am »
Yep you select the crop you want to plant by highlighting it. Note that you have to make a selection for all four seasons for it to work. Or you could have a crop rotation to allow a steady supply of different crops without micromanaging a whole lot of plots.

I never have fertilized before, I usually just make bigger plots if I need more stuff since the farms are already incredibly small to begin with. (I'm working a 36 tile farmplot for 200 dwarves without fertillizer.)

As a crop to start out with I suggest plump helmet because it can be eaten raw, cooked and brewed wich is all your dwarves need for food. Later on devisify the crops to suit dwarves preferences.

Dear Uristmcnopants.

Please put some clothes back on.
I know your old clothes wore off but I've made some new ones for you, out of silk to!
Your nudist behavior is starting to disrupt hard working dwarves, and with three types of vomit on you you're not much to look at.
On that note please stop having children (that vomit on you), 10 children is enough!

Yours

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Never enough dorfs. :(
« on: August 08, 2010, 11:24:53 am »
Weird, my single legendary brewer can brew more then my 200 dwarves need. Granted he is fairly close to a supply of brewable plants and barrels.

Just out of curiosity, what is your drink count usually at?

Also I never seem to have enough dwarves either, I'm constantly building stuff and my 150 dwarf workforce just takes ages. This may be because of the extremely low fps ofcourse. (average 10)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Managing pressure
« on: August 07, 2010, 11:25:18 am »
I think water that travels diagonally through walls loses its pressure, but don't quote me on that.

Like this

W
  W

With w being walls.
Again haven't tried a lot yet, else  you can always make a pump to change the pressure of  the water.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Volcano Dropping. Is it possible?
« on: August 07, 2010, 02:50:23 am »
Or better yet instead of dropping the volcano on the megabeast, you drop the megabeast in the volcano!

Yes I do have similar problems and it's annoying as hell.
I usually end up having to de suspend the construction five times before they can finally be arsed to move the item that's blocking the site.
It seems this usually happens when a dwarf has limited movability near the construction, wich does happen from time to time especially when I'm constructing walls spanning multiple z levels.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: No wood cut, elves still pissy?

Mhm I like the thought of giant eagles, I've seen some flying around but can't really figure out how I would go about catching them.

Ohh giant eagle support troops to disrupt enemy formations and soften them up for the infrantry, I want this.

Remind me why they bring the good stuff when you piss them off though?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Caged Dward
« on: August 06, 2010, 09:55:44 am »
Hm if he's in the list of creatures you can put in a cage, would something similar not work with a pit?
The idea would be just to drop the dwarf from a small ledge and let him be on his way from there instead of having to set up a cage and a lever and whatnot.
Or is it only possible to put him in a cage and not a pit?

Same here I haven't cut a tree in ages, instead bought a whole lot of wood from the humans, but I didn't have that much wood stored still.
Next thing an elf diplomat comes barking at my door calling my dwarves butchers.
Bah give me a human diplomat any day, atleast he said I had carved out a nice place  :-\
After negotiation the elf agreed on no more then 40 trees to be cut, not that I even came close to that amount to begin with!

If that fails I can always discover wether wooden shields will stop dragonfire, I hope for the elves that it does  :P

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Flooding Hell
« on: August 06, 2010, 08:51:15 am »
What?! How dare you steal my masterplan, I already have something similar planned for when I'm feeling confident enough to brave the dephts.

I have acces to an underground lake wich is quite vast, I will use this in conjunction with the vast amounts of magma in the magmasea to cast some obsidian right under the floor of semi molten rock.

The obsidian, for the sake of being dwarven, shall be cast in the shape of a gigantic warhammer. When it's done I will drop the hammer and crush anything down there.

Now the tricky part I can imagine is building suficient walls and floors to form the shape of the hammer before the clowns find a way out, and protecting the masons while construction is underway.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Do wounds heal on their own?
« on: August 06, 2010, 02:49:58 am »
I do think so yes wounds heal on their own, but I wouldn't be surprised if different dwarves heal at different speeds.
Is he resting the injury at all though? Could be his work keeps his fingers busy so the wound can't heal.

Or maybe this dwarf is one of these guys that keeps messing with wounds they shouldn't tinker with so that it never heals propperly.
UristMcwoundeddwarf: Hey look guys, I can move my finger like this! Here I'll show you.  :D

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dragons are pansies?
« on: August 05, 2010, 05:37:03 pm »
Well sorry for bringing this  thread up again, I just thought I'd thank you for suggesting me to upgrade.

So ol' garetho died in the arena, but to be perfectly honest I didn't want that stupid hydra anyway, his info says he had a gigantic build but was incredibly weak. Megabeast yeah right  ::)

In any case.....I've caught me a new hydra, this time one with incredible muscles on a gigantic build, this one is a keeper  8)

Anyway, with the new version it seems they are indeed quite the effecient killers. I've put him against a couple of ogres and it was quite baffling, the ogre didn't even have a chance to attack.

So far it seems the hydras main tactic of attack is to charge towards the target and latch on with one of their heads and just swing the target around till blood fills the room. It's quite brutal, not unlike a pack of dogs biting and latching on, except with a whole lot of power to just swing the target silly.
I haven't tried against heavely armored foes or multiple targets yet, but I'm sure I'll find more things for him to play with.

Also captured a dragon I still have to put to the test aswell  8)

Anyway, thanks for letting me know and if you happen  to be interested in the combat logs to see how they fight in controlled environments just let me know, don't know wether there has been lots of testing on the subject, but who cares this is fun.
