General Discussion / Re: Towards feminist programming languages
« on: January 20, 2014, 02:28:02 pm »
(can't believe I'm saying this)

I don't know I think you guys are being a bit to dismissive here, it is worth it to at least consider this thing rationally before jumping to call it nonsense. Like most sensible persons I don't think sexism should be substituted with more sexism so I'm all for booing extremist feminism. But sexism or no you cannot deny there are significant differences in the way of thinking between the sexes, so if it is possible this difference has crept into the fundaments of logic and thus programming it's worth investigating at least.

Note that I still think it's silly of course.

My thoughts on feminism aside, I am actually rather curious on this whole 'feminist logic' thing. Logic is a subject that interests me particularly. I can agree on the criticism that the field of logic has been a male dominated scene by large, although wether gender is at all relevant in the matter is another thing.

So beyond criticizing artistotle and the many (men) who followed his footsteps as being gender biased, what does feminist logic propose exactly? Anyone who knows a bit more about it, or maybe knows some decent literature on it? Is it even an actual thing?

A description of what she believes feminist logic to be is in the link (although there is A LOT of text to sort through.) Basically, that things can be something and not be something and she believes she can build a programming language around that concept, where objects aren't "forced" to be anything, and can be everything! Or something along the lines of (A & -A = 1)

So basicly doing away with the law of identity, the prime law of rational discourse?
Any other notable interepretations, or is this basis of a feminist logic?

Edit: Alright should've read the whole thread. I'll read up on what's been posted earlier.

The vanu faction colors could stand to be a bit more blackish purple instead of just black, and some more cyan patches.

Either way NC has the worst colors for natural camo. Blue and yellow are like complete opposites. I wish they'd have made the nc colors have a lot more grayish blue, or at least like it was before it got changed.

Life Advice / Re: Is mankind slaves to the tyranny of religion

(Since this turned into a religion discussion, egh what the heck)

Corruption and perversion of morals is inherent to the human condition and by extension any human organization though. It's just that it's more glaring in religious institutions.

If it helps, I propose looking at the teachings of Buddhism

Buddhism is indeed one of the more awesome religions. While I think the whole rebirth cycle and nirvana thing is a load of nonsense myself, I do think the buddha's observation on human behavior regarding desire is profound. Worth looking into from an intellectual point of view at least.

I'll pass for slugs. I don't even think you can fit slugs in the jackhammer, and I prefer pellets for close range anyway, same as on my mattocks for the max. They're to hit or miss for my taste.

The magshot is pretty meh, the rebel is a flat upgrade in most ways except it has a smaller mag. The rebels range is actually quite impressive for a pistol, you can reliably kill with its one mag (10 rounds) from up to 50 to 60 meters away. The desperado's range is a bit less but you can still kill up to 40 meters away except a tad faster then the rebel. It's hard to say how the thing aims in an actual combat scenario, being burst mode and having significant vertical recoil.

I figure I should finally get me a new sidearm (spent the last year rarely using my mag shot) but I can't quite decide on wich to get. Maybe you guys can help me decide.

My general NC infantry loadout is jackhammer decimator as heavy, claw as engi and medic. Looking for a side arm that could service for long range shots when I the situation doesn't allow me to get in close with the shotgun, but is still usable up close should I not have time to reload my main weapon. So far both the rebel and the desperado seem good choices. Rebel seems to be a bit better at range but just barely over the desperado, wich is a pretty powerful pistol overall and trumps the rebel close range by a large margin. I haven't looked that much into the NS revolvers but they seem to be for close range more like.

I'd mostly be using it outdoors and switching to a shotty indoors or around walled areas. Wich do you guys think I should get?

If it's family pressure that's gnawing on you for your choice, there's really not much you can do. Your options as I see it:

- Pretend you believe so you don't have to deal with it
- Try and get them to accept your choice
- Stop caring that much what others think about your life choices
- Buckle to the pressure and just go along with what they want you to believe

Also respect for having the guts to think for yourself, I can't imagine it's easy when your family is so adverse to it.

P.S. Can we refrain from discussing why to chose not to believe? I think we all know how that will end.

Honestly they shouldn't add more anti tank options until they balance the current ones, especially something so experimental. How the AV mana turret is still untouched since its release baffles me.

Ah fond memories of this one. I must've been what...13 years old when I first started adventuring my athletic argonian. Wore hardly anything at all, attacked just about everything at random while running around with ludicrous speed. Just running around being an uncatchable dick as everything chased me in vain, good times.  :)

I'm a new player, and everytime I install Planetside 2, I just don't get the point of it, it doesn't feel like every other FPS I have played. The game's objective is to probably kill people and capture the objective, but to get to the objective itself takes about 1 hour. Crashing the plane you fly, hills you can't get past, the world is too large. I've played 24 hours and up to this point I literally did not see one enemy...

Think of it as a giant sandbox shooter with capturable territory, at least until they get around to making some more tangible victory conditions involving some strategy. Or a grind to get the certs for a larger arsenal, wichever you prefer.

Free? Strong basis on fairly accurate Norse mythology? Full voice acting of very good quality? Free?

This is indeed an epic game.

I am stuck on the purple crystal thingy in Svartalfheim(or however it is you spell it), though. Also feeling very sleep-deprived and I can't go back to Midgard just yet. Also, how the hell do you use the hunting spear? Every time I try click on an animal with it, it just says "The <animal> is not interested in your hunting spear." or "Don't stab the moose."(which, in hindsight, is good advice).

There was another thing. Entering the thieves' lodge at the part where you activate the gate to Svartalfheim in Chapter two, I am immediately sent to the Game Over screen with the message "Cheater". What gives?

Do you mean the five crystals puzzle?

I used the hunting spear on a boar when I first set out to gather food. Might be you need animel ken skill though.

The cheater bit is probably a bug or something. Didn't have any problems with it myself.

Those missles as they are right now seem strong enough as it is to me, probably better this feature doesn't make it to live.  :o
