General Discussion / Re: Humans : obsolete
« on: December 13, 2012, 05:13:39 am »
Oh well this is an interesting topic, quite a read to take in the entire thread though. Before I do that I guess I'll just give my 2cents

Me personally I'm petty indefferent to augmentation or even full replacement of the human body. The same consciousnes just in another shell, what really makes the difference between an organic and a synthetic shell. In the end the human body is but another machine.

Tampering with the mind though now that's a different matter. Where do I draw the line? No idea really. I don't see anything wrong with augmentation I suppose. Significantly changing or cloning a consciousnes is extremely unethical to me, ofcourse what amount of changes is significant...

Ultimately bodily augmentation or replacement is a means to an end, I'm not so much interested in the mean as I am in the end.

This is all ironman classic.  Man, my second terror mission lived up to its name.  While I was dealing with wave after wave of enemies, more and more kept coming.  Those stupid chrysalids were making zombies, which made more chrysalids, all offscreen.  That didn't happen in normal mode...

I knooow that second terror mission is outright well....terifying! After losing two soldiers I had to move all my troops as far away from the terror site as possible just to keep them alive. The amount of chrysalids was ungodly, I must have collected around 20 corpses.
On the bright side, chitin armor (or whatev it's called) for the survivors!

Got me titan armor on month 3, or was it early 4 I can't recall, and finally decided to attack the alien base. I lost two good men in there, one just had a streak of bad luck when he got hit thrice out of three, and one a crit. The other guy died after my sniper failed a crucial 75% shot....four times. Ugh, damn you randomness, and you worthless french sniper.

It's getting a little weird now though, somehow all my male soldiers are getting KIA leaving me with a lot of female soldiers. Right now my main squad is 4/6 female, and depending on wich class this latest recruit picks maybe 5/6.

1# A force that counteracts the planetary gravity. In which case the terrain wouldn't matter as the tank would basically be flying.
Newton would like to have a word with you! Can't have a force outside a pair, gravity effects both the object and the planet, so some form of hover would need to exert force on something as well as the vehicle.
Don't shoot me if I word it wrong, I don't usually talk physics in english.

That comic, so true!

Alright, got enough experience to have a stab at iron man challenge. I'm playing at classic ofcourse, I do like a challenge.

I've already given it a go last night, damn is the early game unforgiving. Still, I managed to pull through and get a pretty good team up and running despite the occasional loss.
I was especially proud of one soldier in particular, same nationality as me even, who was extraordinary badass. Besides pretty much netting half the kills throughout the playthrough this guy earned himself the title 'hazard' after blindly storming in a group of 3 sectoids while shouting 'Moving at the speed of death!', and emerging unscathed taking two down single handedly. While the rest of the team was panicking after a casualty he just kept on killing, so badass.

Sadly I messed up the strategic part (the one part that has no random elements, shame on me) and didn't get enough engineers in time to build more relays, leading to countries leaving all over as I missed two UFO's because I forgot to transfer my fighter to the right continent, stupid.  ::)

Take two, got a decent team up (I won't lie I start over if more then one dies first mission). This heavy already had her moment of glory as she managed a quad kill her second mission in by blowing up a truck. The mission only had 4 sectoids, heh. Suppose I'll have to make her a demolitionist expert!

Rightie, but I make a habit of practicing my left hand coordination for boring menial tasks whenever possible, so I'm not awful on the left either.

DF General Discussion / Re: Toady Playing

The only video I've seen of him playing DF is that one time he drowned that donkey. Or was it a mule, I'm not sure.

I'd agree that, as a designer of a game you cannot get the same enjoyment out of it. All game rules seem so arbitrary, and all features rather dull after having developed them, I imagine.

To all you claiming the
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
ending is the good one, you've obviously not seen the artorius dlc plot! 't will make you think twice wich side is most noble.

In the end I don't think it's really a be good vs bad ending, more like continuing the cycle or breaking it.

Alright I stuck with the game for a bit longer and I have to say the randomness gets better after a while, as soldiers rank up their hit chance just keeps increasing. Thin men still a pain in the ass though, if I decide on playing the top difficulty or iron man I think I'll just pass up on all the missions with lots of the buggers in them.

Yep, I'm aware of the seeded RNG, played enough Civ to figure out the pattern, and since this was another firaxis game it seemed obvious.
I should mention while I save scum (just as a learning experience) I never do it mid mission, I'm positive starting the mission anew gives you a new seed, since the maps tend to cycle as well.

Anyway, psi powers! What are they, what do I need to know about this testing facility?
Two of my A team soldiers tested positive, now I've got a psionic medic support and a long range psionic sniper, neat. What's roughly the use of these abilities?

Also I'm dabbling in jetpacks. Got my rocketeer and my rifle assault equiped with the suits but I'm not sure how this stuff works. Are they harder to hit when airborne? Because I'm reluctant to just have them fly out of cover.
I understand there's a 6 unit fuel limit, where can I see the current fuel gauge? It only appears when I initiate flight.

Here, I'll list my soldiers, beats typing out their specifics.  :)

Vanu sniper rifles definatly have bullet drop, but significantly less. Still for extreme shots you're going to have to compensate.
That said with increased bullet velocity the fastest vanu sniper rifle's bullet drop is all but neglible.
I think the same applies to the damage drop off, faster bullet less dropoff. I could be mistaken though.

I'm EU, so there might be a difference. I've actually tried NAW servers and frankly the latency seemed kind of the same as on EU. Or maybe I wasn't paying attention.
Either way I enjoy playing engineer with a shotty most, tanks and shotgun fire aren't really that sensitive to that stuff anyway.

626
Eh for me personally there's to much latency to succesfully snipe, I can live with the travel speed (some of the pricy rifles even have superb fast travel speed in my experience testing 'em) but when you need to lead even more due to a high latency I'm looking at nearly 1.5 seconds of prediction for long range shots. That's a lot, pretty hard even if your target is moving in a straight line.
Only times I get to sniping is when the enemy groups up in a firing line atop an elevation, usually near a sunderer. They tend to stand still when aiming for those longer range shots, easy targets.

Also remember that you can modify the scoped mouse sensitivity seperatly from normal unscoped sensitivity. Make sure you get it just right for your sniping needs. :)

By far the most fun I've had as an infiltrator though is hacking base phalanx turrets. Best case scenario you manage to surprise a group of enemy armor/aircraft, worst case scenario they blow up the turret fairly quickly, losing one of their defenses. Win win.

Yeah, plasma rifles seemed like a solid choice so I researched those. I'm in my second month now so looks like I'm on a good schedule.

Not sure I'm going to continue playing though, I'm in another mission that's just so INFURIATINGLY random. It's those thin men, man... I miss every shot under 80% and even then some under 95%, they hit and crit everything. They're like DF bogeyman annoyance level squared.
Throw a poison down, get a 9 dmg crit from half across the map, boom another dead squadmate. Just stupid, who would ruin such a great game with this stupidly copious amount of RNG....

Alright I need a bit of advice, about the grey market specificly (awesome name  8)).
I just raided my second UFO and managed to salvage no less then 2 intact flight computers as well as 2 intact power cores.
I'm not entirely sure what to do with these, and I'm a bit short on cash...should I sell these things?
The tutorial mentioned it may be better to wait until it's true value is known so I'm doubtful.

I also looted (I assume I got most of these from the craft) enough alien alloys to deck half my barracks personnel in carapace armor, suweet.

Oh one other thing, how does this live capture business work. I had hoped to capture one of the alien from the crashed UFO but the oppertunity didn't present itself. I was hoping to stun the big pure energy being that seem to be a recurring 'end boss' in these crafts, but sadly I didn't manage.
Does it matter wich you capture, and can you house more then one per facility?

Update: Woo I captured a floater. Nasty buggers those, but they really shouldn't have stormed my heavy fortified in a building heh.

Damn talk about bad luck. Was on an escort mission, all targets down escortee one turn away from extraction point. One of my guys runs into a poison cloud and panicks, shoots down the VIP. Ugh...

On another note, what's up with soldier nicknames? So far I've got my support sporting a medkit nicknamed 'Angel', and an assault 'Gunner'.
Nice feature, I take it they get nicked according to their actions in the field?

3 miss in a row from 75% is bullshit.

Is pretty common for me, I have the worst luck.
I normally steer far far away from games that employ heavy RNG in their game design but I'm urged to try this one a bit longer.
I don't suppose this game can be modded? I think I could make something out of this I could enjoy, just got to normalize this crazy randomness.

To me the early game can be the least forgiving part. Once you get decent armor and a few extra HP on your guys through levels, short of a monster crit from a late game weapon (usually delivered at point blank) most of your guys can survive at least one shot. And then you can fall them back to safety. Early game, not so much.

Yeah I noticed, to that end the first thing I made were a bunch of nanofibre vests. My assault could take up to 3 shots from those midgets this way, plenty of room for error due to random bullcrap.
I love that assault, running up to point blank with a shotgun gives me a 100% chance to hit, no luck involved there!
