Some dwarfs are with a "blue" aurea, what does that mean?
It means they have a legendary skill.

I guess that's OK since I had to reload a previous save.  The merchants arrived and instead of hitting trade I offered them most of my valuable stuff :(
I see good things in store for this fortress.

Also, this is being added to my "shit that wouldn't happen in real life, but doesn't surprise you when it happens in a video game" folder. (which is itself in my "needs a shorter name" folder.)

ah MAN. that sucks, as... sometihng like 80 percent of my forts population are children. statistically they mood more, and while a lot of them die via explosive creativity, some still make it to legendary.

Kinda disappointing.
Well, it just gives you that much more cannon fodder to experiment with!

Just a heads up- afaik, children who become legendary due to a mood only produce objects at "dabbling" once they mature. I think that's on the wiki somewhere, lemme see if I can find it.

Under "Bugs", which is listed as being 0.31.03, so it's possibly fixed since then? Who knows.

That's actually rather interesting.

Perhaps several vertical spirals, connected on only one level, to some large central food store.

I was thinking more along the lines of a central staircase, with a short hallway branching off on every level that could be sealed with drawbridges, and then a large water reservoir on top with multiple floodgates leading to channels to each sector. Just make sure you keep trap of which lever floods which rooms.

Or don't.

I like this.... might become my new Dwarven Standard.

Seriously, though, I've been experimenting with similar fortress structures, and have moved on to a "Double Helix" style to account for the wasted space on the backside of the "spiral." (Between your two workshop wings.)  The two helices in my format are connected at the base, where I locate all of the meeting-area type rooms (water feeds down through the central column) and my critical levers.  That gives me ~19 levels worth of a spiral fort for the space of 10.

Could you post a screen or two? I can't really visualize DF layouts... it's a curse.

I say trap them all and then drop them on incoming enemies. Have it be your only fort defense (aside from walls/etc)
