DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Fortress design verticle transport
« on: July 09, 2010, 10:07:28 pm »
as for defense. just defend the top really well and then have a mecanism to destroy all on stairs (magma fall)

This gives me an idea- have each "wing" (industry, food production, housing, whatever) of your fortress seal-able with the pull of a single lever in a bunker somewhere, and now, with the invading griblies trapped wherever, have another lever that floods just that/those section/s with water/magma. Sure, any worker ants trapped in there will die horrible deaths, but we all know that dwarves are hive-minded, so who cares?

Also, you could dig out the area one Z level above your hallway, build retracting bridges, fill that area with water, and then retract the drawbridges, letting the water/magma fall down.

708
All you need to do is dig down there. Set up a meeting zone there, and dwarves will head on over to hang out in the meeting zone if they have no jobs.
Also, make sure you destroyed the original wagon.

709
How would I bring the dwarves to the bottom?
I can't seem to get them to go down at all.
So all your dwarves are hanging around outside, which is something you don't want?

710
So.... what exactly is your question? I don't understand.

711
So, what exactly is bad about a catsplosion? Is it just the fps hit?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Fish offerings?

It got weirder. As I was walking through town there were statues and fish everywhere.

Armok demands you smite these heretics!

As for updates, well.... *ahem*.... I had to, of course, seal off my fortress from the flood water. However, I got so wrapped up in what I was doing, I forgot to make booze, and, well... they started dying of thirst. Then, since they were almost consistently idle when I wasn't building stuff, they tantrum spiraled.
Couldn't you have built a well out on a balcony? It is fresh water you've flooded with, correct?
The water was spreading so slowly, it hadn't reached the actual structures yet. It's not that it couldn't be saved, but I wasn't in that much of a mood to intervene.

Hm... seems awesome, but seems like flooding the world would cause huge fps issues, even with a low population. also won't it stop immigrants and merchants and so forth from coming to your fort (although i do see a trade depot on your second floor, looks like it goes underground somewhere, does it go out of the area to be flooded)?

does seem very dwarfy as well... dunno if it will flood the whole area, won't it just evaporate after going a while though when the water height at the edge of the flood is all ones?

do hope that it works out though, keep posting updates :)

Yes, there's an underground passage to the "outside", which at some point I wanted to channel out and create a glass roof.

I'm sure I'll go back and reclaim it, but for now, it seems my arrogance was my own downfall. Also, it was probably going to take 5 IRL hours to fill the area.

YOU'D BETTER KEEP US POSTED. This looks cool c:

Uhh, okay, right now, umm, one guy went berserk and is killing dogs left and right, the water continues to flow.... slowly.... and I'm worried about our short-term food supplies, as well as a possible gap in the far retaining wall.

edit: Here's an overview of the water level right now:

Yes. It's like an artificial island fort, sort of.

717
So, it took my diligent worker ants nearly four years, but finally, we've succeeded in turning the map into an artificial lake. Well... STARTED the long road to success, anyhow.

I've built us up a nice, waterproof (fingers crossed) new fortress, to boot!

and then they continue up, so on and so forth, for about 10 z-levels, with drawbridges every couple levels. There's a third, hanging building t the south in the works. Now, if only that water would flow a little faster...

Also, the reason there's nothing in them is because I haven't moved my stuff from the old, underground site quite yet.

I'm running on four hours of sleep, so pardon the occasional type, kthx

Zas calmly walked up to Goblin-Imposter scum. He knew he had to act naturally, or they'd suspect him.

But they wouldn't suspect. Zas was too careful for them to suspect.

"Hey, Kol, it's been a long time, huh?"

"Oh! Zas! Nil went to go find you. Have you seen him?"

"No, I haven't. Maybe he.... got "lost" somewhere?"

"Haha, yeah, probably. Listen, we're here for the pick we left behind, and also that mule."

"I can't believe you traveled all the way back just for that."

"We didn't. We heard that there were OTHER dwarves, Zas, can you believe that? We got a message from them and Nil and I were sent to bring them back to the mountainhomes. Your.... uhm.... lodgings.... just happened to be on the way."

'Even a GOBLIN dressed as Kol thinks he's better than me,' Zas thought.

"Well, I don't have either of them. The mule died months ago, and goblin raiders took the pick not long after."

Zas thought this extremely clever.

"Surely you aren't planning on traveling on right away, then?"

"We have to. It's not like we have anywhere to stop and make camp."

"Of course you do! Come on, stay here, with me. Not for very long," Zas added when Kol started to protest, "just a week or two. I've got the spare food, and booze.... well... the booze takes some getting used to, but it's just as good as the stuff old Urist always makes!"

Zas had a plan, and Goblin Kol was falling for it. He needed to make them think he had fallen for their ruse. Then he would have the element of surprise.

"Where do you expect us to sleep? Out here in the rain?"

Goblin Kol was trying to make Zas think that he wanted to leave. Luckily, Zas had counted on that.

"No, of course not! I've got an axe, so it won't be any problem to make a few beds, and there's...."

"There's.... what? ......Zas?"

"There's... caves! Yes, lots of caves. Caves all over the place around here. You can all sleep in my room tonight, and I'll find you a nice cave for tomorrow!"

"Well.... I guess we can't leave until Nil gets back, anyways, so- why is that funny?- so I guess it won't hurt to stay a few nights. What was that you said before about the booze?"

"Here, this way! Wait here, let me go clean up inside a little first."

"It's no big deal, we-"

"No, no! I insist! I uh... I insist. I'll just be a minute."

Well, that's the last of those. Next update is back to gameplay and screenshots and all that dwarven fun. Meanwhile, I guess this means I have to start playing the game some more...

THAT ROOM IS ENTIRELY TOO SQUARE AND SYMMETRICAL!! SO TOO IS THAT TOWER!! BURN THE HERETIC!

DF is like OCD candy, isn't it?
No, DF is like the stranger in the trench coat offering the candy.
