Isn't there a program that lets you design a fortress in, like, a spreadsheet, and then your dwarfs will carve it out?

When I made a jeweler workshop my dwarf was trapped behind the 1x3 wall and starved to death because I completely forgot about it.
Just found microcline, I think I am getting close, as in adventure mode caves have a crapload of the stuff in them.
Cave ins are the best way to deal with this sort of thing when you have a small(ish) population imho.
I don't know about him, but I tend to spend 15 minutes just in Character Creation. So you stopped playing it after you, what, did a single quest? Good job.DF is less addictive than Warcraft because in Warcraft you have buddies and social pressure from your guild. You can't pause a WoW raid, you can only leave and hurt your reputation.DF is MORE addicting than Warcraft because Warcraft is boring as hell. I stopped playing after 15 minutes.
DF is more like SimCity and The Sims, where you can always start a new fort/city/character, try doing things differently. DF and Sims can have user-made content, little tiny expansions of the game.
If your significant other wants some escapism, he could lose himself in fantasy novels too, 400 pages per day. I don't think threats or disruption will work.
Atom smashers don't work on titans.
Same. It isn't worth the points on embark when I'm not going to need until after the first caravan arrives anyway. What? I do that all the time. I usually just buy one from the first tradesmen.I also embarked without anvil and pick (for fun), only with two axes. This means that I can not mine and am sad panda. You embarked without an anvil? What were you thinking, man?
Why does everyone hate the UI? It's almost as good as Aurora's and a lot better then many modern UI's for games I have come across.I agree. There's definitely a few areas where it could use some work, and some things could be simplified, but on the whole I think the UI is pretty solid.
