Isn't there a program that lets you design a fortress in, like, a spreadsheet, and then your dwarfs will carve it out?

I usually just look around for some nice rock I can dig down through, and move my staircase over there.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Removing unusable tiles in workshops
« on: June 26, 2010, 09:38:43 pm »
When I made a jeweler workshop my dwarf was trapped behind the 1x3 wall and starved to death because I completely forgot about it.

"Hello?"
"Yes? How can I help you?"
"....Urist McWife?"
"Yes, that's me..."
"I regret to inform you that your husband passed away today."
"Oh my Armok! What happened???"
"He..... starved."
"What? But.... I packed his lunch just this morning!"
"Well.... he was... kinda.... sorta.... somewhat.... Well, he was walled in."
"He- wait, what?"
"Yes. He was building a workshop, and he accidentally trapped himself behind a wall."
"Why didn't you dig him out?!?!"
"We.... we were going to, but uh.... we sort of forgot."

Mine are usually like this:

eeeeesss
ewwwess
ewwwess
ewwwess
eeeeess
ewwwess
ewwwess
ewwwess
eeeeess

and so on, where e is empty floor, w is workshops, and s is my stockpile (stockpile is more than 2 tiles wide, that's just to represent.)

Just found microcline, I think I am getting close, as in adventure mode caves have a crapload of the stuff in them.

That has nothing to do with it, it's just a symptom of worldgen/the biome you're in

Cave ins are the best way to deal with this sort of thing when you have a small(ish) population imho.

I would just draft the least skilled 25% of my population into the military, send them to their deaths, and use the time they buy me to wall off the others.

DF Suggestions / Re: Suggestion: Time limits on players!

DF is less addictive than Warcraft because in Warcraft you have buddies and social pressure from your guild. You can't pause a WoW raid, you can only leave and hurt your reputation.
DF is more like SimCity and The Sims, where you can always start a new fort/city/character, try doing things differently. DF and Sims can have user-made content, little tiny expansions of the game.

If your significant other wants some escapism, he could lose himself in fantasy novels too, 400 pages per day. I don't think threats or disruption will work.
DF is MORE addicting than Warcraft because Warcraft is boring as hell. I stopped playing after 15 minutes.
So you stopped playing it after you, what, did a single quest? Good job.
I don't know about him, but I tend to spend 15 minutes just in Character Creation.

(Not in WoW, just in games in general... I've not sunk low enough for Warcrack)

Atom smashers don't work on titans.

Anything that's too big just atomizes the bridge instead.

First off, I like Rhino.
Secondly-
Real men model Dwarf Fortress with Legos.

I feel your pain. I usually just make my craft rooms 1 tile bigger in each direction, so the impassable tile doesn't fall against anything.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: No immigration without caravans?
« on: June 26, 2010, 05:51:02 pm »
I also embarked without anvil and pick (for fun), only with two axes. This means that I can not mine and am sad panda. :(
You embarked without an anvil? What were you thinking, man?
What? I do that all the time. I usually just buy one from the first tradesmen.
Same. It isn't worth the points on embark when I'm not going to need until after the first caravan arrives anyway.

I also think it would be interesting if there was a sort of fame/respect system.

IE, Legendary Axedwarf who slew the Forgotten Beast is "famous", and all the other citizens look up to him. If, say, he dies, tantrums are more likely than if some nobody died.

DF Suggestions / Re: Ui fund?
« on: June 26, 2010, 05:48:12 pm »
Why does everyone hate the UI? It's almost as good as Aurora's and a lot better then many modern UI's for games I have come across.
I agree. There's definitely a few areas where it could use some work, and some things could be simplified, but on the whole I think the UI is pretty solid.

Personal UI pet peeve: Hitting enter to build my wall, because I'm expecting it to work like Designations, or hitting u to mine, because I'm expecting it to work like Constructions.

I heard of a dwarf who had tow steel axes in his right hand, and a shield and training axe in his left hand, and wore 4 layers of chainmail.

Not as much stuff, but I still laughed at the mental image.
