DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Megaproject: The Dark Portal
« on: January 13, 2015, 02:43:43 am »
Im brainstorming ideas, which may or may not include creating a safe tunnel through the circus, for a device that will either teleport dwarves or make then vanish "into another dimension". Bonus points for avoiding death flags and unhappy thoughts.

Im going to make a large scale version of the Dark Portal from warcraft, and when complete send every last Dwarf into it.

What glitches or features exist which force dwarves into places they should not be?

DF Community Games & Stories / Graniteblaze and the Thousand Year War

Moved from my attempt at fishing for advice: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=60551.0

As far as being newbie goes, I probably couldn't build a pump stack to save my life, but I'll be damned if I'm passing up this much Fun.

A solid third of all the legends of an entire world, revolve around this travesty. One I aim to end.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So the game kept wanting to crash and spoil my ambition. Oh well. Successively had to size it down to max embark -4 rows on all sides but top.

We have embarkment! Despite my earlier fears, the game is running remarkably smooth and fast, despite the massive amount of creatures and stuff happening on-screen.

---

Graniteblaze, The Firey Standards, has a wealth of land sprawling all around Menacehand. The four towers of legend stand, looking north from left to right; Torment, Despair, Terror, and Fright.

We have mountains to either side, beneath our feet, and a bowl before us where the towers stand. Torment fills a valley that would have otherwise been a secondary path into the bowl from the north; but we came from the south! Torment is the tallest of them all, a six story structure, and even at this distance we can see the monstrous form of Lural atop it. Prisoners of The Terrible Ghoul are being paraded and sorted into the towers, even after these three years there are plenty of survivors.

But what disturbs me most, are all the children.

I find myself, almost enchanted by their friendliness. The chain look comfortable, even Lural seems inviting.

To shake off Lural's corruption, we hit the tankard, and hit the dirt. We need to dig in before they change their minds about us. We need to be prepared before they notice any more of Zon's conscripts migrating in.

We excavate a hall for frontline defence, and set to building sturdy doors of stone, and comfy beds of willow. Good thing we brought a baker's dozen of logs, because the only sprinkling of trees is on the other side of their towers.

Lural ... A great scaley armadillo twisted into humanoid form, it has a bloated body, beware its fire! He is very skinny. A thousand years of attempts to take him down have failed. How will we, NOT?

If you want to skip the rest, this is my difficulty: http://dowjin.webs.com/myembarkment.jpg

I need advice on how to survive scorching conditions, I have an objective I -must- complete. For Great Justice.

Most importantly, how will I make all my beds and barrels?

The story

Upon worldgen, while I was looking for a cozy place to embark, there was a certain blatant disgust I held for one of the southern Dwarven nations. They settled in the hottest asscrack of earth they could find, and after one thousand fifty one years, could only build THREE mountainhomes!

Every other nation EXCEPT DWARVES, have scores of cities and fortresses. Why are my people so full of suck?

And why, I asked myself, would they settle for the scorching conditions of a desert? Why didn't they just move north past the mountains and into the resource-rich forests beyond?

And why, was there a single Golbinoid fortress upon the highest mountain peak laying between them and that promised land?

Legends Mode revealed it had been there since the dawn of the Age of Myth, and what followed has inspired me to crusade for my stuggling brethren.

I would chronicle the Epicness of this legend in greater detail, but frankly, the legend is as long as the world itself, buried within 767,285 entries. If anyone wants a particular file for study or to help me out, let me know.

Dwarf Fortress Legend calls the betrayers Dwarves.

I do not.

The "Duergar" must perish for their treachery, the fiend of deciet Lural banished back to the pits for corrupting our brothers, and the Goblins expunged from our path to the promised land!

My plan is to found great military bastions around the offending mountain, to complete the flanking that the three original Mountainhomes had started.

After bolstering our Nation's strength, I will let time play and watch the world's legends for news on further sieges against Menacehand, fueled by the dwarves I've previously lead to greatness.

Or perhaps, in the near future, dig their floor right out from under them with one final Fort!

Is this possible? Recommendations?

DF General Discussion / DFG 31 08
« on: June 30, 2010, 09:31:08 pm »
So I started up some Dwarf Fortress with the new version... Aaaand mayday's DFG 31 08 seems to lack; color. And general visual appeal. Like a step backwards from DFG 31 03....

Anyone else notice this?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Megaproject Greyskull
« on: June 25, 2010, 08:51:10 pm »
So to solve a few of my engineering handicaps (as I'm a newbie and the last time I made a chamber for my mechanic Dorf "mad scientists" to play in they flooded the fort with their GENIUS and a ton of water) I'm going to build UP this time.

Down will be reserved for mining, trap networks, and magma operations.

I wanted something iconic to build, I'm sufficiently drunk, and have 32 ounces to go, so I'm imagining castle Greyskull.

Advice?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Too much Fun in spring! HALP
« on: June 21, 2010, 02:58:56 pm »
Okay, so MAYBE convincing my fellow dwarves to make camp in a Terrifying embark zone was a tactical flaw, but there's a wealth of gems for the taking and by Armok we will have them!

My situation is as follows;

13th Slate...

Woodcutter cancels Chop Down Trees, interrupted by Skeletal Deer... WHAT?

As I scramble to figure out how to get him to HIT IT BACK WITH HIS AXE- I get more interruptions from the other side of camp. The undead have launched a brilliant pincer manuever, two skeletal deer on each side. Alas, my walls and doors are only half complete at this stage, so they trample freely through my camp.

Woodcutter Kogan Uzasmel gets knocked back into a large pond, but in an inspiring feat of heroism, drags the skeletal deer down with him, both tumble in, trapped beneath a full block of water.

Kogan drowns, leaving one Skeletal Deer trapped in the muck. Muck that will certainly dry by Summer... But we have more pressing concerns...

14th Slate...

The remaining left-flank deer chases Tulon, my expedition leader, whom wisely sprints by my two chained war dogs. Said war dogs also draw the aggro of the other two skeletal deer chasing my remaining dwarves back into their cave.

We are now in a pitched battle. My war dogs are fighting valiantly, but the Deer do not seem to die!

My dwarves are cancelling their tasks and seem to want for nothing other than running in circles whilst screaming...

What do I do?!
