DF Suggestions / Re: More depictions of gods
« on: November 05, 2015, 12:12:50 pm »
Also keep in mind yin-yang bombs.

Fire and water, darkness and light, earth and sky,  desert and ocean.  They don't have to oppose.

They do if you have a functioning brain.

Those oppositions, are mostly rooted in our culture rather than something inherent.    A totally different creation myth, with a totally different different pantheon of Gods, could easily see Light and Dark as equal, easily see Earth and Sky as Equal, and easily see desert and Ocean as equal.

It depends entirely on the core values of a given civilization, and the mytho's surrounding it.

However, the point is rather moot, as Sphere's of influence are in the game and wouldn't create directly opposing concepts like this.

I constantly leave for months and come back,  I always think I've forgotten how to play but muscle memory is amazing.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Temples!

What I mean by that, is that the personality profiles used for demons have them all being "every demon for himself" in behavior, with subjugation and subservience to more powerful demons/beings being the norm down there.  Given that they are immortal, cannot reproduce, but still somehow exist in limitless numbers, there MUST be some kind of social order down there.  The most likely being small fiefdoms ruled by a central power figure, with less powerful minions held in thrall.  I would expect to find such enclaves in the hell layer.

I think "there MUST be some kind of social order down there" is dubious.  There certainly could be, in some cases; but remember that DF is intended to procedurally generate all sorts of different fantasy realms.  We simply don't have enough data on life as a creature that is not merely freed from the constraints of biology, but has never experienced them.

How much of not just human history, but of all life we know, is dominated by the need to eat, the drive to reproduce, and the fear of death?  How much has been driven by the great gears of evolution... does this behavior make you more likely to breed before you die, and for your offspring to breed after you?

I seem to recall some interesting research on the biological benefits of altruism, family & clan relationships, etc.; much of it came down to indirectly helping genes *like* yours pass on.  A creature that was created by godly or magical fiat, with no need or opportunity to breed, no heritage before or after, no genes, no need to eat, sleep, breed, age... would they even understand the *concept* of a society, let alone form one?

Of course, some fantasy (and actual historical religion) sub-genres have elaborate pantheons, hundreds of hells or layers, and so on.  DF should be capable of generating those, and more; one world might have something bureaucratic and vaguely Chinese, another D&D + Planescape inspired, yet another pure creatures of crawling chaos.  Social structure should be *possible*, and should be procedurally generated to be interesting; but it shouldn't be assumed to be "human-like" for such disparate creatures.
I would actually see it.  I think part of the thing is, right now, you were never really intended to actually be able to conquer hell, so there was no real reason to put much depth in it.

But I do think if you -DO- manage it. You should be rewarded with a plane of earthy delights, sprawling lairs, abject chaos

Those damn saiyans.

Really? Odd.  I have the exact opposite problem, if I don't jack them above 100 they don't survive to year 100.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Animal Size Descriptors

Also it seems to make sense to breed sheep, and other docile animals for fat and long hairs, and dogs, and other animals you plan on using for combat, for muscles.

Do genetics really work that way in DF? Can..can you confirm?  I'm currently hoarding lions for a Colosseum...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: A few specific novice questions
« on: August 06, 2014, 12:42:45 am »
I use 5x5 rooms with 15 beds around the outside and a gap for the door. Still assign each dwarf a bed and assigned the whole room. It divides out the material value a bit but with engraved walls will still give dwarves the "slept in a fantastic bedroom" thought. The benefit is if you get a vampire, he won't be able to feast on dwarves without being caught because nobody sleeps alone. Also its a very simple matter to tunnel out and house hundreds if it's in large blocks of fifteen.

Make sure your bedrooms are more than eight tiles from the surface so woodcutting doesn't disturb their sleep. Try and do your nearby mining and smoothing in as few hits as possible to minimise the noise disturbance.

I used to do this one too, and it's a great system. Specially for vampires, but I dislike the aesthetics of it personally.

And lastly, bedrooms or dormitories?

I use both, a dormitory for the excess dwarven population to sleep in as a I constantly construct apartment floors.  Usually 3x3 rooms, occasionally I mix it up. I try to do patterns through my fortress, but that's more personal flair than needed, a 1x1 bedroom will give you what you need but it's ugly  (used to use those beds unassigned as overflow in refugee warrens, only those who proved themselves were assigned a bed.  Got annoyingly complex around 150 dwarves in)

It's a bad sign that 6 versions came out before we properly detected and reported such a huge bug. We had one job!

I just thought my parties were that epic, honestly.

You mainly get notes on your own civ's sites since that's what he hears about.  If they are not at war then not much is happening.  Not sure if rumour can spread via trade, ought to, just dont know if it's done.

Check your civ with the 'c' button and examine the positions, make sure they are all dwarves and that it's well populated and/or check it in the export to see that it's healthy

Ah that seems to be the problem. My orginal civ was at war, but then I selected this one because it had a cooler name (The Fortification of Winter, compared to like the Rusted Gears or something)  and it's not at war.

But the Legends Viewer location of this Civ is pretty badass, it's on a temperate peninsula extending off of the north pol. I'm still under the impression they're at war as I've had at least one Goblin Siege before the fliers preventing invasions bug happened (I'm going to fix that just as soon as I get my defenses up.  Right now I'm enjoying the peace)

Just struckme as odd, evdery other fort I've played has had pages after pages after pages of world updates.

So, I know the Outpost liason keeps you updated on happenstance in the world every year, and when nothing notable happ<ens for a year you get that message.
I've gotten it for two years (possibly 3, we'll see in a couple seasons). Now, my question is:
Is it that my world is that lame (There were lots of battles, and there's even a couple wars still happening between some factions in legends) and nothing is happening
Is my home civilization ('The Fortresses of Winter'just too far removed to hear about other civilizations getting messed with?
or
Is it just a bug ?

I'm inclined to believe one or two, and regen the world after this fort if nothing changes by the time it crumbles. But it's nice to know either way

My dwarves will go without necessities for years while I painstakingly finalise the perfect design for what could otherwise have been a rectangular room with a few tables and chairs. Here's my latest meeting hall, for example.

Can't lie. I used to do this all the time too. Now I make a small utilitarian one to re-purpose as a workshop/stockpile when the main one finished.

I was told a man's son had been kidnapped and taken to a goblin fortress. So, I made my way there with a few recruits, and went to town. I went up two buildings, where lots of goblins were clustered on the roof. Mostly civilians. The slaughter was great. Start fighting and many of them cower in place, curled in the fetal position crying profusely.

I have found that the new "neck" body part is VERY vulnerable to slashing. Even when the blow can't land squarely, I can still usually cut the head off with a slash from my silver sword.

You don't cut off the head, though. Just the neck.  The part you pick up off the ground is the neck, the head is still...attached to the body.

Some how.

Although, I like throwing necks at people.

"The Spinning Ostrich neck hits the kolbold in the right hand, which explodes into gore!"

Yeah, take that you filthy kolbold.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: slave
« on: March 08, 2013, 01:43:19 am »
From what I know slaves and prisoners are different slaves are forced to work for the civilization while prisoners are just waiting to  be freed bit a high rep allows you to recruit them while prisoners will just hop on your meatshield band of adventurers

Now, question, do the children of slaves become full citizens?

The reason why I ask, the main dwarf civilization (The Lone Hammers) top 3 positions (King, Queen, General) are all Goblins,  checking through legends they were always members of the Lone Hammers, however they've had a history of attacking (often right after a peace treaty) a neighboring Goblin civ.
