DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Smoothing under furniture?
« on: February 18, 2011, 08:11:06 pm »
From what I've seen it appears that you can smooth under an object if the object doesn't block a dwarf from passing through that tile.  You can smooth under tables and chairs, but you can't smooth under statues.

This. Note, however, that if you designate a tile for smoothing, then (b)uild furniture on it, the designation for smoothing gets borked once the furniture is put into place. I end up with a lot of annoyingly un-smoothed doorways because of this (it's annoying because I have to designate it again 'cause some jackass didn't designate it properly in the first place. I swear, whoever it is that's controlling this fortress, he's a real moron sometimes.)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Raising Bridge Bugged?

I've probably done this six or seven times. Finally I made a rule for myself to test the bridges at the first opportunity, rather than waiting for the goblins to show up.

Or just disabling "eggs" on your food stockpiles.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Anvils? Whaa?

My civ didn't have any anvils available in the list, but I was assigned a steel anvil as part of the default gear. Which isn't that great, since it tied up 300 embark points that I would have liked to spend on a doctor. I would have preferred an iron one.

Yeah, I'm liking it so far. It's nice to have something to worry about, y'know? Maybe I'll finally get to see a tantrum spiral first-hand.

You don't know your fowl very well. Ever get chased by a goose?

Nope, but I've seen it happen. The goose stopped chasing when the guy turned around and kicked it. The kick wasn't a DIE! kick, more of a gtfo kick, and it was enough to put the bird off.

When I was a kid, I was chased by a particular rooster frequently. On one occasion, I grabbed a log of firewood, turned around, and whacked the rooster in the head with it. It stopped, shook its head, and resumed pursuit.

It also survived about four or five attacks from pit bulls. When the owner decided to kill it, he wrung its neck, then watched it get up, and repeated that process twice before he got his .40 caliber blackpowder rifle and shot it twice.

(It was super-chickenly tough.)

Curious beasts desist in their curious behavior once they're a member of the playable entity (or possibly any entity).

But, god, I hope they try to drink it. Rotting them from the inside out will be so much more fun than rotting their feet.

Holy crap, I never thought of that -- will they try to drink it? I've gotta test this. Too bad I don't have any gnomes on my current embark. But, then, I'm about to re-gen with the new release.

I got one that was rather cold-like. They got a fever and then went to sleep for a while. Occasionally they'd suffer an infection in the affected area. No one ever went to the hospital for it.

I'll be glad when pharmaceuticals go in.

An extremely similar situation is happening in my town between the mayor and chief of police. Bug-features for the win!

Sorry I didn't arrive in time, but "rock bars" accepts metal bars that aren't alloys. So billon, rose gold, black bronze, etc. are right out, but copper, gold, silver, etc. are fine. I noted that you had a bismuth bar, though, so the "body parts" for shells thing might have been the issue. Either that, or you had only the one bismuth bar, and he needed multiple units of "rock bars" -- if they need more than one of a thing, they have an annoying tendency to avoid gathering it until the number of units they need are available.

If the original liaison gets killed, he will be replaced by another dwarf, but will be referred to in the aforementioned announcement by his former profession rather than as an outpost liaison. Toady mentioned it on the thingy once.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: soldiers droping weapon
« on: February 16, 2011, 12:19:43 am »
The sword he was carrying first was assigned to his position in the squad rather than to him personally. Now that his position has changed, he has to get assigned a different weapon. A process which is automatic but goofy at present, and especially problematic if he currently has a kill order.

LOL, that's do-able, but the funny part is that by the time I get things set up to get magma out to blow the barrels, I might as well just magma the gnomes too  :)
