Truth is that giant spiked balls don't work well at all as they don't behave like blunt weapons (I have seen silver spiked balls deflected by leather armor many times). If you have silver or copper you should make warhammers and put them in your traps. They will not be as effective as steel serrated disks but they get the job done.

Then again even if he let them breed the number of creatures you can kill in fortress mode could vastly outstrip a realistic population growth model... Barring maybe rabbits...

I had an idea previously to make a fortress based around a spiral staircase with 'habitat rings' supplying all the food and wood. Basically it would involve digging out huge circles with floor hatches linked to a lever and each level on top of the other. I would flood a whole level turn off the water and then drop the water down to the next level and so on. I realized I would lose 1/7 water for each level so a better method might be to flood two levels. Also this can continue down as far as you like and can always be expanded later. But I never got around to it... Lol

Yeah... If the speed that high skill dwarves produce goods was toned down alot that one change would put the economy in a much much better situation.

Ooooo... I hope he considers adding more 3D underground features when he does that! It would be awesome to have pockets of water or magma. Or flowing magma or water rivers underground. Or even deep aquifers.

Anyway fortifications let your animals get killed by archers and reloading a new animal is kinda a pain.

My question is how far away can the animals reveal ambushes from? I want to make a gateway that reveals all ambushes and can be left open. This way I know where the enemy is for activating my devious manually operated traps.

EDIT: I know I can put animals on a chain but I don't want to track down a new animal every ambush and have a dwarf haul it up there and possibly get killed in the process.
