DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarves stopped storing food in barrels

My dwarves suddenly stopped using barrels for my food stock piles. Is this a mod issue (I'm using genesis), a new vanill bug, or am I doing something wrong. I have empty barrels in my stockpile and they aren't forbidden. Also they were using barrels before and food that's in the barrels stays in the barrels but no new food is being put into barrels. Which is really annoying with the mountains of tallow I have.

DF Modding / Modding speed of activities based on skill?

Is there any way to modify the time an activity takes to be based less on the skill level? So a legendary dwarf only works say twice as fast as a proficient dwarf who works twice as fast as a dabbling dwarf. I would especially like to mod mining to be slower overall but especially for legendary dwarves. Also I would like many tasks to take longer in general but especially for high skill dwarves. I don't want dwarves to walk any slower however.

How do you get armor for a dwarf in adventure mode? Do dwarven forts have shopkeepers? The wiki says they don't and I don't want to kill any dwarves to get armor that's my size. Please help an adventurer noob.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarves dumping and my delivery chute

So on my latest fort I have a 50 z-level delivery chute to my deep fort and forges. My problem is that I have several dumping spots designated but my dwarves seem to not be able to pick the closest dumping area to the item they're trying to dump and I can't figure out why. Sometimes they'll grab and item from 20 z levels down and hoof it up to the top of the shaft to drop it. Is there any way to remedy this behavior or theories as to why it's happening? I know I can have only one active at a time but that's alot of management headache. Or I can use burrows which is also management headache and has drawbacks. Is there anything else to be done?

You know what would be super useful? Is a tool that could go through a save and delete all items that were marked in some way (like every item that is marked for dumping and forbidden?). This would greatly help many people's FPS. Does such a tool exist?

Does anyone know the current status of the effectiveness of siege engines in the latest version? Are catapult effective against armor? (Do they behave like blunt weapons?) And can ballista pierce enemies armor effectively with a good head? (Also the wiki says 'Wooden ballista arrows are made using one log, and (presumably)Verify more powerful ones can be made using one log plus a metal ballista arrowhead from the forge.' does that mean it's not confirmed that the head affects penetration or what?) I was thinking of setting up a nice set of siege weapons but I want to know if the effort is going to be worth it.

So I tried forbidding everything outside that I could find but I still have dwarves trying to run outside into the waiting ambush to grab a silk sock somewhere but I can't find it. Is there any way to zoom straight to the target of a job?

It seems that it's very easy to overwhelm the traders capacity with the value your fort can produce... Is there any way to make the traders carry more goods? And has anyone seen wagons in the new version? How much more can wagons carry?

DF Gameplay Questions / Too many dwarves, too easy, what to do?

Now that I've got the fundementals down I'm finding much of the game just frustrating and tedious. I have too many dwarves immigrating. Is there any way to turn it down? I'm only in my third year in a very inhospitable climate (tundra) and I've 131 dwarves. I really don't know what to do with them all. I would put more in my military but I already have 20 and they seem to be able to take care of any goblins without even a scratch. Also it seems far too easy to attain sufficient wealth to take everything that I want from the caravans (and that's not much. Why do they have so much useless crap? Oh probably cause everyone else only sells their useless crap like I do!). What do I do with all my dwarves and all my junk?

The wiki in 40d talks about selling prepared meals but I can't seem to find any way to send them to the depot. Is this disabled in 2010 or is there some kind of trick?
