The problem is that DF probably tries to solve pathfinding for everything at once every frame.
I believe the solution would be to do what RTS games do and put everybody in a queue and solve pathfinding for one or two units every frame or two.
My opinion also. Pathfinding doesn't have to be done instantaneously. If the critters in DF have slower reaction times but make the game playably fast in return, that's a trade-off I'm a-OK with.

HAH. I found a way...although I have no idea how it works. I've got few high mountains and lots of flat deserts, and for some reason most of the running water in the flats is actually streams rather than brooks. Fuque me if I know how that works, but right now it really looks that way.

Humans usually kill everything in sight, THEN set up their strongholds. Not very savage anymore once all the native wildlife is deaders.

So...humans live in grasslands, that is?
But why don't I see any elves? I've got plenty of non-savage forest to go around.

So on my way to creating a world full of savage deserts, I encountered a little problem. There are, you see, definitely goblins around. And there's 7 kinds of dwarf to choose from.

But no humans. And, of course, no elves. Which angers me immensely, since I created non-savage forests especially for them to dwell in.

So then, help me with this: How can I ensure the presence of all four species? Dwarves need mountains, obviously, and elves need forests...but that's as far as my knowledge goes, and the wiki isn't exactly verbose on the subject. I already scaled the age cap on world gen back to year 2, and all that's placed is dwarves and gobbos, so it's not just a case of freaky extinction patterns.

I'm using PerfectWorldDF for the whole affair. Nifty programme.

I'd also just use pumps. Or a single pump. Have a reservoir one z-level below, pump it up from there, have it flow back in.

Although that might be unhygienic. Better to use a flowing water source...but that tends to hurt FPS a lot. My my. What do I know :D

Also, while often overlooked, one might wish to remember that there's a lot of human males that can't grow a proper beard either. We should be careful when speculating on dwarves by proxy of humans.

Dwarves won't, and neither should you. Unhealthy capitalist sugar-water...tastes awful, too.

But now, adamantine cavern brew? Sounds too much like "Nuclear Waste Disposal Zone Brew" to me. I'd stick to my dwarven rum, thank you very much  :P

a plate that triggers when your water gets too high, and one that triggers when the level gets too low.
How the fuque would one have a plate trigger according to water levels?

You've got huge 100 z-level shafts in the middle of your map and you're complaining? For shame!
