Dwarves will clean, but only when you don't want them to. (I had a brewer decide to clean my barrack with 6 drinks left and no water source.)

I fear I have aeroues problem. Or rather had...

I know about the magma stuff, no magma in my fort. I had 1 of every workshop except: Alchemist, Quern, Mill.

Maybe it's a bug? Eh, sucks for you Metalsmith buddy.

DF Gameplay Questions / What does he want!?!

I've a Weaponsmith in a strange mood, his only other notable craft skill is stonecrafting. I've a forge and crafts workshops built but he won't claim a shop, any ideas anybody?

(P.S.-He might already be a goner at this rate, and if he's not making artifact weaponry I don't care, but I'm curious what he wants.)

Single cage can hold all animals. Also, although you cannot lock doors for dwarves anymore, you still can block animal access.

Not sure you can do anything other than cross your fingers. I mean if you want to fight elves or humans then just seize enough of their trade goods, but I don't think you can attract dragons.

Alcohol, or aquifer. (Search wiki for the latter, I haven't encountered it personally.)

+ - on numpad and enter to select should work. If it's a laptop then no idea, sorry.

DF Gameplay Questions / Making slopes - is it possible?
« on: October 30, 2007, 10:36:00 pm »
Topic title kinda says it all. I like the downward slope icon to orient me and would like to see it where I terraform the outdoors, rather than just open space. (with a ramp on lvl below)

Edit: Nm, the ramps do it on their own once actually built. Yay!

Thanks Toady. Exactly what I was asking.

DF Gameplay Questions / Local Scale
« on: October 30, 2007, 07:16:00 pm »
So of course trying Fortress mode for the first time I just had to give myself the biggest land area allowed. I promptly found my game running at 4-5 fps from the start.

Now I'm experimenting with the largest amount of land my comp can manage but I was wondering how many tiles by measure of the Local embark menu were the old Fortress  maps?

Again thanks, now just the questions of kids and mechanisms if you'd be so kind. (See above)

schnobs, always helpful, thanks.

I don't remember computer specs when I got it, but now looking at my Device Manager: I've 2 3.2 ghz Pentium 4 processors. That seems much higher than I recall and I don't think I'd be having problems if it were accurate. Makes me question if I need to do some serious work on my PC (other than defragment it 1500 times in a row).

Water slows everybody down from what I hear, but ok, if animals have no impact you've just saved the lives of countless cats, horses, and a few foxes.    ;)

Would de-fragmenting a whole bunch help btw? Yep, my computer is on a sorry state.

DF Gameplay Questions / Animals and game-lag?
« on: April 06, 2007, 04:51:00 pm »
So I finally got a fortress with 100+ dwarves (along with my first siege, yippee) and now I'm getting the slow-down I've heard so much about. My FPS is on average between 22 and 15. Now I've had no particular need for meat to boost my food stocks and so I've let the animals breed like crazy -for a rainy day or something. I've even started breeding foxes though the dwarves never want them for anything. I was just wondering if slaughtering half my 180 or so untrained fairly useless animals would increase my game speed. Will that many animals put any drain on the CPU or are they too stupid to take any notable toll? It's not game-breakingly slow as there is a lot to keep tabs on, but all the same if it'll make the game a bit faster then let the halls run red with the blood of 90 foals and cats.

Tag on 2 more q's to avoid creating new topics:

1) Is there any way to check what mechanism connects to what? I installed mechanisms for cages to my floodgate lever, (sucker goblins) and now I want them gone but I'm afraid of removing the floodgate mechanisms.

2) How long till a child grows up?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: A couple of questions, please

Xeirxes I agree with you, but there does need to be some reward (which there is,) since moods risk the life of a dwarf and occupy a workshop -and possibly much more if they go berserk. Gameplay-wise, the best thing about an artifact is the super-dwarf it makes out of the crafter.

That said the great thing about this game is that there ideally is no "right way" or "purpose" beyond leading your dwarves.
Hence the emotional attachment is key. (Although I question the psychology behind that with a motto like "losing is fun")

Edit P.S.- I scrolled past a few (including schnobbs') posts, and thanks for the reply. I know about the seasonal (seems like bi-seasonal to me though) cleaning, and as for chasming stuff I want to avoid it if I can figure out any other use for it. So far my weapons traps consist mostly of scavenged large daggers. I sense that I'm very conservative with resources, probably more than need be.

Thanks again puke. BTW I didn't signify artifacts generating wealth because I find it's generally not needed, having detailed floors in any sizeable room (like a barracks) seems to skyrocket the value anyways. -Assuming you've got good engravers.
