DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / New Fortress layout, sloped grid

Hello! I have a report from our industrious dwarven architects with a layout for underground fortresses. It has been termed the Sloped Grid layout. It is designed to make good use of three-dimensional space and fill a cubic area with high density but easily expandable workshops. It also eliminates the need for staircases so less chance for dwarves to tumble down them. The efficiency of the pathing still needs to be better tested.

To visualize the layout, start with a standard grid of hallways running north/south and east/west, and junctions where hallways meet. Then take all the north/south (or east/west) hallways and tilt them on an angle. Each tilted hallway is split into two, with one half leading down where the other half leads up. This will give each junction six directions to travel from. If we tilted the north/south hallways, then from each central junction you could travel east, west, north-up, north-down, south-up, or south-down. Edge junctions will naturally have fewer directions.

The degree of slope and number of levels between junctions can be modified to suit an individual fortress. I've found 3 levels works well. For an image of this layout. I've included an image that shows the top layer and five layers below it.

The design is easily expandable to any size desired. It works best in a solid expanse and can break down near a sloping surface.

Heheh, ahh, yes, I hadn't really noticed how it fit the standard naming convention for Harry Potter books  :D Anyways, its not based on them or anything, that's just the most common current example of that particular theme.

I don't have any screenshots yet as the client really isn't all that graphically impressive (and I'm still adding new bits to it all the time). Unlike a normal mmorpg, it's not really trying to convey the entire experience of some fantasy world. The way it is using augmented reality means that the game takes place in RL in some ways. The various game elements are placed throughout the world. The idea is that you simply can't see them without using one of the game clients. At some point (when we get a 3d modeler) we can actually make 3d models for those things. For now, most of them are merely represented by icons. To help you navigate on the pc-based client, that client includes mapping software (Nasa Worldwind and Open Street Map) to let you send your in-game avatar to various locations around the world.

Greetings fellow bay12ers.

I've been working on a project lately. Mythology Unbound is a new type of game currently under development. It blends elements of MMORPG's, social games, and augmented reality to create something new.

The basic premise should be one familiar to most people and popularized by books and movies such as Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Apprentice. In addition to the mundane world that everyone can see, there is a magical hidden world all around us. Players in Mythology Unbound will take the part of wizards, witches, and warlocks that can see and interact with the mystical. Unlike most MMORPG's which are set in a fantasy world, Mythology Unbound is set on Earth. As an augmented reality game it takes place in the real world, overlapping and extending what you normally see. The bus stop down the street may have trolls living under it, the nearby park may be a good place to find arcane cinnabar, or the fountain at the mall may be a popular place for wizards to hang out and swap spells.

To interact with this magical world, the players can control avatars, command familiars, and cast spells through the use of a game client. There will be many different clients allowing access to the game world. The most used will likely be on GPS-enabled devices and smartphones, allowing the players to receive updates based on their location. Currently there is a working reference client that runs under Windows, Linux, and soon Mac.

You can admire our carefully crafted fortress at -242,-261, not far from an excellent source of magma. All foes to Armok shall be crushed and their children butchered for their leather!

(Ha, seriously, thanks for pointing out this Illyria game..it looks very intriguing so far =) And I hope SW was the right quadrant? Glancing through some of the posts it seemed a mix of that and SE)
