I'm starting up playing shortly so we'll be going again soon :)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: why do I have so many immigrants
« on: August 27, 2012, 11:34:27 am »
If you do not wish to have so many dwaves you can edit the init file to have a smaller population cap, and less children as well if you so desire.

Can I get dorfed as Delioth, Resident B.A.? Swordsdwarf, Male preferred, but it doesn't really matter. Also, at some point in time when you get the needed industries, could I get whatever sword I have encrusted with gems? Many thanks!
Unfortunately it seems, according to the wiki, that you can't normally decorate weapons with anything :/

I'll be updating more tomorrow.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Gem Encrusting specific items?
« on: August 27, 2012, 12:05:58 am »
Rather than encrusting items randomly with gems by just setting the job at the workshop, is there a way to designate specific items to encrust?

Explorer's Journal - 1st of Opal, 251

With the advent of winter and the completion of our basic living arrangements I've tasked Mageziya with smoothing out the stone of our humble home. Once he's gained a significant amount of skill I'll start having him recount the legends of our civilization within the dining halls.

Explorer's Journal - 18th of Opal, 251

Due to the expanding population we have dug out a second underground farm plot to feed our workers. I've also commissioned the digging out of a barracks for Militia Commander Kate. She will start training our military and bring them up to shape in no time.

Explorer's Journal - 1st of Obsidian, 251

Inod Lertethiden has been rather secretive lately... we saw him pass by us recently muttering to himself as he made his way towards the crafting hall.

Explorer's Journal - 5th of Obsidian, 251

It seems he has been busy at work on perfecting the art of staying warm.

Certainly an item to be coveted and cherished in such a cold place.

If you guys would like to write journals for your characters in relation to the story and everything then by all means, go ahead ^_^

The dining area is mostly completed now, we've started putting in an initial set of tables and doors. Once this place is properly dug out Mageziya will begin smoothing out the surfaces and make this place much more presentable.

Additional migrants have arrived, unfortunately in the middle of a rough snow storm. The group of 6 dwarves quickly make their way into the warmth of our humble home. One of the arrivals is a bone doctor. Hopefully this additional personnel will help Ethan741, M.D. in the future.

Explorer's Journal - 11nd of Sandstone, 251

Apparently the wildlife here is quite hardy, as one of our future war dogs was stung by a bee today, in the middle of a cold late autumn, in the middle of a snow storm no less. I was not aware that bees could survive in such temperatures. Perhaps in the future they will make very high quality mead, if such hardy bees can make just as hardy honey.

Explorer's Journal - 18th of Timber, 251

A Caravan from the mountainhomes has arrived! With it come much needed provisions and other necessities. I quickly instruct our most able to carry all of the presently available trinkets and crafts crafted by our very own stone hobbyist Kate to the trading depot.

Explorer's Journal - 28th of Timber, 251

At last the basic living arrangements of our fort have been completed! With this we can build up the rest of the kitchens and properly store our food stockpile.

Winter has set upon us now. We have settled in quite well enough to surely make it through the coming years. With any luck we shall bring glory to our mountainhome and make our king proud.

144
My standard practice in any game is to make one chest and one cabinet for all of my dwarves, so you will eventually get your own stuff once we're completely settled in.

145
Awesome, it's looking pretty good. How many migrants arrived?

Also, aside from how he looks, Kamin is a lot like me. I am kind of surprised! And the fact that his favorite drink is sewer brew just makes me crack up--I made (and drank) a recipe I dubbed "Sewer Brew" in honor of the DF beverage of the same name. Although I don't expect anybody to be interested, I'd be more than willing to provide the recipe.

Oh, and yeah, it was pretty awful.
Well, with a name like "sewer" you're not exactly drinking merlot. Also Deroft will be pleased to know we have iron yielding ores and bituminous coal. I don't know if we have flux stone (darn bugged embark) but we'll see. Iron armor may not be the greatest but we'll certainly try.

Our crafting workshops have been completed, and our bedrooms have been carved out. This place is starting to look like more than some forsaken hole in the frozen earth. Kamin has begun work on making ourselves some beds. It's certainly better than sleeping on the ground and rocks, that's for sure.

My office has been carved out as well, and I can begin taking proper stock of our holdings. Having proper records will be essential if we want to succeed here.

Explorer's Journal - 11th of Malachite, 251

With the coming of summer the river has thankfully fully melted and we can begin fishing for food. It's good to know that this place isn't too close to the southern pole that we'd end up without fresh water or fish year round.

Explorer's Journal - 25th of Malachite, 251

Our first wave of migrants has arrived! Apparently we aren't the only dwarves this side of the Continent of Mirths who're crazy enough to settle in such a cold swamp. With any luck they'll have some more skilled craftsmen to further provide for our small outpost of a home.

Explorer's Journal - 9th Limestone, 251

It is now fall, and the digging of our living area is slow but progressing. Several of our dwarves have taken up rock crafting in anticipation of the caravans coming in late fall. Kate herself has found a hobby in rock crafting, finding it helps with her dexterity as well as tuning her mind and promoting creativity.

147
Can I see mine also?
All 7 have had their profiles hyperlinked over their names. Just go click 'em ^^

SO MANY TREES FOR CUTTING!  :D I am excited. My Dwarf is a presently indispensable member of Fencedboot. This looks like it'll be a great embark with some pretty good stories. I guess the only bummer is that it's in a calm environment, which means we'll have a little less action than in an evil biome  :P

Can we see the Dwarves' profiles? It could be edited into the OP for ease of access, should you decide to show us our "us-es".
You want their v->z->enter right?

149
I've already given Militia to Kate but she'll gladly have you in her squad.

Explorer's Journal - 1st of Granite, 251

And so it is we've arrived at our destination. If you were ever told that the surroundings were swamplands you wouldn't know it. Indeed most of the land is covered in a thick layer of crunchy snow, our boots leaving footprints at every step. Our single military dwarf, Kate, slowly surveys the immediate environs. This will certainly not be an easy task for all of us, with the weight of our guild's reputation riding on our shoulders.

We had not bothered to pack picks nor axes, our resident warsmith Deroft having the clever idea of bringing the ores themselves and smelting them in a furnace, allowing us to skirt around the limitations of our provisional funding. The team quickly set to work to foraging around while AJ provided Deroth with the needed charcoal from the several logs we had brought along for the trip. A snow storm had quickly set in as we began our quick work on digging ourselves a home away from the cold weather.

It had been pretty unanimous from the get go that I be our outpost's expedition leader. Though I was unsure of myself I elected to do my best not to let my fellow dwarves down. Our lives were in my hands.

Once we had the few copper ores we had brought along smelted Daroft quickly began working on making the tools needed for our small band of explorers to gather necessary provisions. Our resident "cuttist" Kamin started making quick work the local tree life, a grin of absolute glee adorning his bearded face.

With the picks finally forged, Ethan741 and Mageziya quickly began their work on digging out our home away from the frigid swamplands and tundra above. Our first priority was to get AJ's underground farm plot  up and running before anything else, with stockpiles soon to follow.

Explorer's Journal - 6th Slate, 251

With our farm plot finalized AJ quickly went to work on sewing seeds for our farm provisions. Dimple cups were in season and we intended to capitalize on them.

With their newly forged mining tools Mageziya and Ethan741 continued their work, digging out our living area along with crafting rooms and adjacent stockpiles to put the finished goods into.

Explorer's Journal - 18th of Slate, 251

With the snow melting and the uncertainty of the depth and stability of the frozen river I have instructed our crew to move all of our present supplies to a temporary stockpile on solid ground until the proper facilities have been excavated.

Explorer's Journal - 21st of Felsite, 251

With the coming of spring the crew and I are thankful to discover that the climate is not too cold as to completely prevent fresh water from being available. The northern pools of our site have melted and provide us with fresh water, unfortunately, no fish have been found. It is hoped that if and when the central river melts that fresh fish will be available to catch for provisions.

And with that the first season has ended. I am still playing though, so expect some more content in a little while. This is my testing the waters post, so hopefully I should finish out the rest of the year pretty soon.
