Common lore is that all shield materials block with the same effectiveness. Given the choice, copper shields are "better" than steel for the cheaper material and less smelting effort involved.

Edit: you're the ninja. it's you.

Leather armor is much cheaper and lighter than metal for a peasant militia. Besides, why waste metal on haulers when all you really want is a pair of boots to stave off rotblooded foot fungus?

Yeah, but a fix is coming next version? When is next version coming out?

Not a "fix", more of a mechanics change with supply and demand playing a role in trade. Don't bank on fixes, dungeon masters have been bugged for more than a year. Next version will be out when Toady uploads it.

Sadly, cavern lakes don't have flow unless you're pumping out of them.

Ah yeah that was worded badly. And now that I think about it, I was wrong anyway. So don't do that. I just meant for drainage, you'll want something like:

pPXF

Pump from the canal through carved fortifications off-map to drain. Just block the output tile with a floodgate or lever-operated door. It will still take ages to drain and dry out, but my first plumbing experiment was a gravity drain because I didn't know better. When I said submerged I just meant power it by an axle because if you're draining the bottom Z of a 2-Z canal the walkable tile will be submerged.

Those are my second favorite FB's. I imagine they just wander around for hundreds of years, then when they see something moving for the first time they get excited, and sneeze themselves into a wall, splattering.

My second favorite is the more sedate ones that stand still long enough for me to drop a cave-in torpedo 12 stories onto their heads. Bonus if they had rotblood too.

Lovecraft was all about psychological case studies. What happens when someone is confronted with unfortunate truth about humanity's tiny place in a huge, unknowable universe. It's a journey of sublime discovery.

I'd actually argue that modern action-schlock is the genre with nothing happening. X is a hero, Y is a villain, they fight. X wins. Also there's a romantic interest and some plucky comic relief. The end.

Relative to other trade goods (in particular, stone crafts) food has a lot of effort required. The best explanation I've heard is: stone crafts require 1 dwarf to grab a rock and whittle it into a ring. Meals require a planter to till the soil, grab seeds hauled and stored by peasants, plants harvested, hauled to a stockpile, then cooked. Meat takes more effort than that. Roasts cooked with masterwork booze take even more. A stack of 300+ roasts from two different forgotten beasts marinated in masterwork booze and breaded in whip vine flour, all getting the X12 masterwork multiplier... gets silly.

Food seems overpriced because it's something you're doing anyway for happiness, but it's not a simple process.

..... Ninjas. They are everywhere.

Open pathways to the caverns could in theory cause  FPS drop from pathfinding recalculations, but I've never noticed that much of a problem.

Caveat on a plumbing system though, gravity feeds and drains take FOREVER to fill and sloshy water can be detrimental. Fill it with a pressurized intake from an infinite source (cavern lake or river, though I find caverns easier to work with) and a submerged pump feeding off map will shave months off the drainage time. Don't skimp on ramp access either, as draining it will spring up mushroom trees all over the place.

That's the working text of a possessed mood. He's making an artifact with that name, probably a bone ring or something equally amazing.

Most of my forts end up with 3000+ cooked food and booze. If you have any regular butchery work, your farms can be 3 9-tile rotated plots and feed/booze 200 dwarves with a single farmer. If you fertilize, you don't even need that much.

For one, I know they're fond of storing ONE GODDAMN SEED PER SQUARE quite often.

Bags store uhm... 15 seeds per bag I think... then the seed bags cap be up to 10 per barrel on a seed-only stockpile.

Yeah, I can't answer your question directly, but have you looked at the dwarven calculator or mechanical logic entries on the wiki? If you want fast, fluid logic isn't going to be that much help, but since it's the hybrid component in mechanical logic you're going to have problems if you need anything less than the 100-step delay for pressure plate toggles.

I had similar problems before. Booting them all to civilians helped me, when they put all the gear back in the armory and re-enlisted they got it right the second time, no fuss.

Not sure if you've made your decision yet, but for what it's worth, don't completely drop windows if you're interested in gaming. Ubuntu wasn't the distro I used, so I can't speak to that, but WINE was never anything but a headache for me, except the rare occasion where someone was using my distro with my hardware in the game I wanted to play, otherwise it was an endless stream of migraines.
