DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Validate work order?
« on: October 30, 2007, 11:34:00 am »
He needs an office.  Build a chair and assign it to him.  I built a little one z-level platform for him to sit on and whip the other dwarves.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Questions about Backwards compatability
« on: October 28, 2007, 09:46:00 pm »
Old saves are not compatible.  There will not be a 2D/3D option.  The two versions will not share files.  They will not eat their broccoli.  They will not play together nicely, not even if you offer them candy.

They might coexist on the same machine, but only if separated by a 'folder' barrier.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: So, how do I farm in the new version?
« on: October 28, 2007, 09:40:00 pm »
How about this simple idea for farming?  So easy an elf could do it!

code:
~~~~█
~~~~█████████
~~~~X.....X#█  Upper level, with full river adjacent to walls.
~~~~█████████
~~~~█
........
.I....I.
........
........  Lower level.  Just a really big room with a support or two.
........
.I....I.
........
~ = river
█ = wall
# = floor grate
. = floor
I = support
Step 1: You open the left floodgate, and the little hallway between the two floodgates fills up.
Step 2: Close the left floodgate.
Step 3: Open the right floodgate, and the water pours through the grate into the room below.  The water spreads out and muddies a big blot in the center of the room.
Since the hallway only holds a certain amount of water, and the room below it is large, the water spreads thin and evaporates, leaving a nice muddy patch in the middle of the room.
I call it "drop farming".
DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Mysterious dwarf
With so many family relations the mental health of the mother would be very unstable!  If anything happened to any of them the whole fortress could tantrum at once!
The sheriff also comes with an axe, you can drown him for it.
What does hoarding all your gold in an inaccessible 'treasury' do to your dwarves?  Do they still all move to the barracks because they can't pay rent?  Do they get unhappy about not getting their money?
DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Bone grates?
When a dwarf makes an artifact, he can make use materials that normally can't be used to make that object.
This is a weird one, though.
DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Why go past the lava?
Those aren't reasons enough?
There's other high-level ores like gold and platinum, once you beat the demons you can mine those with impunity, ignoring the adamantium if you like.
DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Farm Plot Help
« on: September 23, 2007, 12:08:00 am »
There sure would be no room for mistakes though.  A simple 5x5 plot usually sustains my forts, although I use more when trying not to exploit the brew-and-cook multiplier.
DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Question about Sparring.
« on: September 19, 2007, 08:38:00 pm »
Don't give them all awesome armor.  Until they get some armor user skill or above-average strength it will make them so slow that whenever they do decide to spar, they'll never make it to the barracks before one of them gets hungry/thirsty/sleepy and cancels the sparring job.  Bone armor is light and quite protective enough to protect against the attacks of newbie wrestlers.  If you're lucky enough to get a legendary bone carver from a fey mood or something, you can carve truly excellent light-weight practice armor for your dwarves.
Place statue gardens near or in the barracks so the soldiers hang out there when not sparring.  When they get the idea to spar, they'll be right there and will have maximum odds of actually sparring before one gets hungry.
If one of them has even the lightest gray neck or spine or brain injury he'll never spar again, since they'll never recover, and only healthy dwarves spar.
DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Miasma in the dining room
Glad I could help.  The rotting abandoned food thing is annoying, but fortunately it's rare enough that you needn't bother yourself about it.
That sounds like a terrifying artifact, by the way.  Who'd want to play a spiked drum?  Well named, though.
I've noticed that if a dwarf is eating when he gets a fey mood, he runs off to the workshop and leaves his food on the table.  It's still claimed, so nobody will touch it, but while he's making his artifact his food just sits there and rots.  I haven't found any way to remove it, but he'll either remove it himself after his artifact is made, or it'll rot away into nothing after emitting three or so puffs of miasma.
I've noticed this effect as well.
I had been chasming cages with fully-equipped goblins in them, and my suspicion is that items chasmed while being worn aren't removed from the list.  Terribly frustrating.
Chop down all the walls and replace them with clear glass windows.
Maybe add some supports.
Seriously, this only takes like 20 minutes.  If it takes you longer, it means you will never get a girlfriend.
I'm single.
