DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Glass trap components?
« on: December 18, 2010, 08:05:32 pm »
Glass traps are glitchy right now. The game generates the values when it starts rather than reading it from a list like all other materials, so you could end up with glass sharper than spoiler-stone, or duller than silver.

Really?

I feel a bizzare compulsion to make said glass stuff now. If only I had any sand....

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How do you choose a site?
« on: December 18, 2010, 01:51:48 am »
I specifically look for sites that straddle biomes, to get the best of two worlds. Look for the "F1 F2" underneath the list of layers to toggle biome coverage display.

Specifically, I have a love of mountain meets forest. Infinite rock and metal on one half, infinite wood and soil on the other.

THIS.

+ a brook. Brooks are your friends.

Yeah, but the ground won't take kindly to having a goblin thrown at it...

Also: I have no magma on this map as of yet, so any magma traps are out of the question.

You could always use water. Or spikes. Dwarves like spikes.

Creating a hallway full of steel spikes to stop a siege.

And forgetting to link them up to a repeater. D:

I'm still not sure how to do that.

I just use the lazy dorf's approach of having a lever in some place with high traffic like your dining hall or statue garden and then just link them all to it, and set "pull lever to" repeat

Dear Urist McHero,
You are the definition of why you shouldn't be a hero.  There was a whole legion of goblin bowmen on the other side of the bridge, the one that spans over a volcano.  That they HAVE to use to get into our fortress.  I told you to go behind a corner in the hallway to protect yourself from their arrows while they run on the bridge so UristMcDoesn'tHaveAJob can pull the lever to raise the bridge and send them all to their doom.  Instead, you decided to charge on ahead, across the bridge.  I'm sure you were very confused when I very intentionally didn't send the rest of your squad to help you and let you die.  By the way, thanks for taking down 3 or 4 of those goblins while you were in a martial trance.  Want to know something interesting?  If you had stayed with your squad, you probably would have killed many more, and more importantly, NOT DIED.

Dear Military,
How in the hell did a goblin elite bowman manage to evade attacks from 5 of you at once, headshot one and take limbs off a few others while running, and still hurt you as you stood around him in a corner poking at him?  Seriously, you should all be ashamed of yourselves, this is exactly why I train you to be good fighters and dodgers.

Your entire squad only had one brain which they collectively shared. Unfortunately for you, your dorf who charged across the bridge took it with him when he did so and it enabled him to go into a martial trance. However, with him, the squad's collective brain died and so too did their combat ability.

Urist von Noble has issued a mandate: Dragon Egg Omelette with a side of Hydra Bacon and Minotaur Milk.

Urist McLegendaryArmoursmith: doot de doo dooo. I'm making adamantine full plate. Life is good. Lalal-OWWWW! WTF?
Psycho McHammerer: Urist von Noble's mandate for dragon egg omelette has gone unfuffilled. How dare you show such affront to our nobility? SUFFER THE HAMMER'S WRATH!

Urist McLegendaryArmoursmith has bled to death.

But isn't iron still better armour?

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=53571.0

Seems to indicate that it is.

As for facepalm moments?

Earlier today I forgot to account for preassure when working on a megaproject that involved magma pumps. Fortunately for me and my project, my last save had been mere minutes ago so I was able to undesignate.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dwarven bathhouse?
« on: December 17, 2010, 09:14:07 pm »
I'm pretty sure anything more than 4 is drowning depth.

Actually, I am working on a similar project, only mine is a shower/waterfall that happens in the entranceway to the fort rather than a bath, but the problem I am encountering (aside from trees in my pipes) is that the filth just accumulates on the floor grates rather than be washed down to the caverns.

Anyone got any suggestions here?

what you need to do now is dig down to the caverns in such a way as the only pathable route into your fortress for forgotton beasts is the hydra's den.

Then you can have a REALLY epic showdown.

Longname McProceduraly Generated Forgotton Beast has arrived. It is a giant llama made of cake. Beware its fire!

Hydra vs forgotton beasts. GOGOGO!

If hes in the dining hall he'll scare our workers.
In the dining hall, he'll scare our workers.
In the dining hall, he'll scare our workers.
Earlie in our fortress.

(well. giave them bad thoughts, but that didn't fit the rhyme)

So what shall we do with the ca-ged kobold?
What shall we do with the ca-ged kobold?
What shall we do with the ca-ged kobold?
Earlie in our fortress?

Urist MciyaerP cancels Forge Song. Thinking...

Urist MciyaerP charges into song. You are suprised by the ferocity of his baritone.

We'll train him as the outpost mascot.
Train him as the outpost mascot.
Train him as the outpost mascot.
Earlie in our fortress.

edit: okay, my shift is over so I am headed home. in 12 hours tho, I shall return and compile the remaining singing and any more done in my absence into the big song post.

Then get a bookkeeper and give him an office.
Get a bookkeeper and give him an office.
Get a bookkeeper and give him an office.
This earlie in our fortress.

But what do we do with the ca-ged kobold?
What do we do with the ca-ged kobold?
What do we do with the ca-ged kobold?

I am only disappointed that nowhere do I see that line
"Put 'em in the bed with the baron's daughter".

Well we ain't got no bloody nobles,
We ain't got no bloody nobles,
We ain't got no bloody nobles

I know, right/ I have killed a bronze collossus, a hydra, and several forgotton beasts and have yet to see a statue or engraving of ANY of them.

Struslot Axesizzled. A human who once journeyed into the mountains where my main biome is and tamed some giant eagles there.

They LOVE him.

Also are fond of the dwarves who abandoned my old fortress site that wasn't too far from my current one. Even tho that one only was about a month before I abandoned due to flooding, but my engravers still engrave them fleeing into the Cradled Spine (the mountain range I am in) all the time.

After that, the next most common thing they like is Meng Glinteye, the Fungi of Attacks, my Legendary-est axedorf slaughtering whatever he slaughtered this week.

After Meng in popularity is whatever random elevations/removals of nobles/positions happened in the fort over the years.

And then just random crap like buckets, dorf surrounded by fire snakes, cows, etc.

Sadly, the giant eagles in question never show up for me. Would love to tame them myself.

I am a big fan of 3x3 rooms for almost all purposes.

perfect size for bedrooms and workshops, which take up the vast majority of my fortress space.

So I basically start with a grand entrance hall past the Corridor of DOOOM. Hall is dining room/meeting place and contains my trade depot. South of that in the area between hall and cliff face where I entered the mountain, I make a  massive booze/food stockpile. To the east are the honeycomb cubicles for all my workshops. Past the workshops is the catapult range for my siege operators to practice. (and get rid of all the scrap stone at) To the west are the honeycomb cubicles for my bedrooms. Stockpiles for goods are underneath the main hall and workshops. The north is left open for expansion/noble chambers.

Every bedroom has a statue, a cabinet, a coffer, the bed, weapon rack, armour rack and door.

Entire fortress is covered by engravings.
