The one piece of clothing that really matters for soldiers is wearing a pair of hoods on top of their helmets.

Because as far as I can tell, hoods are the only thing in the game that protect the face.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Shields and buclkers

This is because a shield is an armor piece, and follows different rules.  It is equipped to a hand similar to a glove.  In adventure mode, this means you can stack near-infinite shields, but fort mode has somehow managed to make it reasonable and allow one grasp per hand.

Wait, how do you do that? Only way I know of to "wield" a shield it to pick it up with an empty hand. Picking up a shield when both hands are full just puts it in your backpakc. So how, praytell, do you multi-wield shields?

just use an aquifer plug.

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Aquifer#Cave-In_Example
But they only work for single layers.
I think I've struck a pretty deep aquifer layer here.

No, just mkae the plug big enough that you can dig down and make another plug inside the first one.

I've done it before.

You want a solid block of stone to drop down on whatever you are killing. you acomplish this by having said block of stone cut off from everything but the one support that is attatched to the lever and holding it all up.
On the sides of the block of stone, it is channeled all the way around. Likewise, it needs to be detatched from the floor(s) above it, so you completely dig out the layer above it and also channel down around the outside.

Shows the same basic principle at work, except that that one is for breaching aquifers. But the cavein logic holds true.

Yes. if diagram is is your ground floor of the room you want to drop things on, digram b will be the floor above that, and diagram C will be the floor above that.

For a 10x10 cave in:

= is floors
D is dirt/solid rock

I always just use a stone carver. You never run out of materials, it gets rid of tons of the crapstone in your fortress, and the elves don't piss and moan about it.

And as a follow-up - in the upper sections and the non-lethal sections of a trap maze - 1 weapon per trap, mechanisms of superior or higher quality only is ideal.  Far better to have 10 tiles covered with 1 weapon per tile, then only a single tile with 10 weapons.

Make a stockpile near your future trap maze that only takes superior or better mechanisms.  I suggest having at least a 50-tile stockpile for that as you can quickly burn through a lot of mechanisms while setting up a trap field / maze.  Or if you have legendary mechanics, limit it to exceptional or above.  Sell off the lower quality mechanisms by making a stockpile near the trade depot that takes low-quality mechanisms, and use the superior or fine mechanisms for cage traps where quality doesn't matter (other then for giving dwarves happy thoughts).

(Weapon traps that used edge weapons will frequently jam if they score a kill.  So more traps with fewer weapons is preferred.  I never put more then three iron/steel discs in a single trap.  And early on, they might all be single disc traps until I have time to rip them up and replace them with higher quantities.)

If you want to avoid jamming the traps, just go with traps that have 10 silver warhammers.

They will almost never jam, and still slaughter everyone and everything with wonderful regularity.

Have you channeled out all the tiles in the room/solid rock above that one?

It's Murphy's Law.  The chance of a dwarf having a mood related to stuff you don't have and won't have for a while is almost 100 percent.

You don't understand! If I don't have electrum, bismuth bronze, slade, and giant cave spider silk, how can I ever hope to appease the dark voices that demand Krumplestarmk, the Fed Butterfly, artifact crutch be created.

MAGMAAAAAA

Always a solution.

Also, that image site looks less than trustworthy, so I hope you don't take offence if I choose not to click your picture.

87
what is the advantage to masterwork mechanisms (besides the good thought from walking past one)?

They greatly increase the "skill" of the weapon traps that they are used in.

So rather than having ten steel serrated disks that attack as if swung by a drunk kobold, they are now aiming as if they had been swung by your legendary slaughtermiester.

88
I think fixing the whole trees not burning in magma thing might be slightly more important.
Great now you ruined the image for all of us.
All in favor in magmamizing the engraving ruiner say magma.

MAGMAAAAAA
NO MAGMA

No, wait. That's not right. Nevermind.
>:(
I'm watching you.

That seems almost delicious when you compare it to the kitten tallow biscuits i had for lunch.
That would just taste like butter.

"I can't believe it's not butter!"

Have you ever eaten biscuits made entirely of butter? Yeah, I think I'd rather have just about anything else.

They're called croissants.

:D

This is a kitten tallow croissant. It is composed of finely minced goat milk butter, finely ground cave wheat flour, dwarven rum, and finely minced kitten tallow.
