I couldn't plant the undeground forest however the forgotten beast got in the pipeworks. Oh and the necropolis isn't full of coffins. :(

That brings up a good point: how high is a z-level? I'd guess about 7 or 8 feet (2.1-2.4 meters).
a fully grown tree or a bronze colossus are both taller than that, but they are contained in one z-level

Trees actually do appear on the z-level above when outside...
