DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Fortress Design

That's an interesting design. Do you channel instead of using stairs?

Does anybody ever build double story rooms? Does it increase the value?

The purpose of this thread is to express your frustration freely without fear of the consequences.

I'll just go ahead and say it then,

I'm frustrated with the way the Seahawks are playing this season.

Don't have much time right now but here is my results.

Shark is town.

So that means Shakerag is scum. Unless Shark is the godfather.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Fortress Design
« on: November 18, 2011, 03:44:54 am »
Hey i'm starting a new fort and I was wondering what is the trendy way of fortress design right now.

All my forts consist of a 4x3 staircase with each level devoted to a different thing.

The first few levels consist of farms and mass stockpiles, then the bedrooms use the rock levels. What i'm wondering is how you guys are able to build forts without the central design that always creeps into my fort.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Quern vs Millstone?
« on: November 17, 2011, 12:20:44 am »
I think it really depends on how many dwarves you have. If you have a fortress of 150 and 1 milller then its a good idea to have a millstone. If you don't mind having 3 dwarves working on querns then you won't notice.

I usually only build querns because its something for my dwarves to do.

If you don't care about modding.

Just mod in a reaction to create unlimited charcoal and adamantine wafers.

Otherwise you'd need to find iron and flux stone. Change the cavern layer to 2 so that the magma is closer to the surface.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Feasibility study
« on: November 16, 2011, 03:30:30 am »
Hi i'm currently in the midst of a test to see how long I can make a fort last and I thought I would do some Science along the way.

I am on the 11th year of the fort currently. I have 76 dwarves and have yet to been sieged. My military consists of 11 axelords and 5 marksdwarfs. I set the pop cap to 50 and have been breeding my way up.

So far I found out these things:

Dwarves that let their skill rust out for too long will eventually lose the skill altogether. In my fortress of no migrants I had a 66 year old peasant. When checking her stats i'm fairly sure she was my shearer. As she had no other job this is how I was alerted to her. It seems that if you wait 8 or so years without improving a skill they lose that skill. As of yet no word on if this also applies to legendary dwarfs.

Turning off Weather and Temperature is a good thing to do. I went from a FPS of 40 all the way up to 100.

If you can it's a good idea to forbid all your wood before a caravan comes as they will bring a lot of it.

Roving animals seem to disappear. Is this because I killed them all or because they don't want to show up past a certain year?

What i'm trying to find out:

Will caravans become larger each year? After starting at about three animals and then moving up to 6 they don't seem to change. Is it influenced by how much you offer or sell?

Do dwarves inherit possessions of their parents? Does this include titles?

I'm open to more suggestions of what I can learn or check up on. I'm fairly sure some people already know what i'm looking into but  it's my first attempt at !!SCIENCE!! so I thought i'd do something basic.

DF Gameplay Questions / Breeding
« on: November 14, 2011, 03:25:40 am »
So i'm partially in the midst of a dwarf game and I had a few questions.

1) Is the vanilla baby cap something I need to change? I currently have 70 dwarfs and 7 children. How can I change it so that I can have unlimited kids?

2) I got my countess to marry a hunter. They had a child. When this child grows up will he be a noble? If the mom dies can he claim her position? If I ever get a king can I do the same thing with his kids.

3) Is their a marriage cap every year? I'm in the 10th year of the fortress and everyone has a lover but I've only had two marriages.

4) Is it actually feasible to run a fortress for 200 years? Will the kids grow up and marry people?

Thanks for the support!

Ok here who I am voting for and why.

Shark: I've read posts by him in other games when he was scum and he acted a lot different, granted everyone is terrible at asking questions but he seems to be playing town very well.

Remelle: Could be the godfather but it's too risky to vote for him on the off chance. Has been playing a fairly solid town role so far.

Shakerag: Drakon's inactivity doesn't hurt you, you've been playing a decent job at town.

Shoes I can't tell if Shark or Shakerag is scum but it's fairly obvious that you're their scumbuddy, and you throw a vote at Remelle instead of trying to to claim the other two are scum. Why are you doing this?

Do you believe I shouldn't be voting shoes? He hasn't done ANYTHING, and all he's done recently is yell at andrew

It seems that your vote for shoes is a policy vote, why are you spending the most important day in the game trying to policy lynch someone who is hardly active? If you're so sure that Shakerag is the other scum then why don't you start attacking him and trip him up?

Shakerag Your vote is on Shark, yet all your attention is at shoes, are you just going to drop the shark vote at the last second and vote out Shoes?

lynching lurkers is generally a bad idea

Is this actually your defense?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Large, Serrated Glass Disks?
« on: November 13, 2011, 12:12:55 am »
Yes,

Put ten in a trap and it will kill just about anything passing through it. It won't damage the armor but Goblins hardly ever wear full armor and when they encounter glass traps they lose all their limbs

That's what i'm saying if they both suspect the other two of being scum why aren't they ok with both voting out shoes?

Andrew:  Waaay back here you asked Jim who he would save N1 if he was the doctor.  Jim said he'd pick Toaster, since the ICs are always the first to go.  Why did you choose to inspect Toaster N1 anyway if you had reason to believe he might be a prime candidate for getting killed, thereby wasting your inspection?

If you notice the previous reply before it was mostly because Jim wanted people to be more active so I tried.

The reason I kept asking people what they would do as doctor was because I wanted to get a sense of who they were getting a read on. I didn't ask cop questions because I was scared the mafia would suspect me.

The reason I still went with Toaster was because I needed to make sure that the mafia wasn't an IC. And if their was a doctor they would have likely tried to save Toaster as well.

This is a really interesting posts that have been going on.

Shark wants to vote out Shoes because he thinks Shakerag and Shoes are mafia.

Shakerag wants to vote out Shark because he thinks Shoes and Shark are mafia.

If both of you think that Shoes must be the mafia why aren't you both voting for him?
It makes me suspect that both of you are the mafia and are trying to confuse the vote.

Mafia / Re: Games Threshold Discussion and List

I was thinking of an idea for a mafia game and I was wondering if it had been done before.

The idea is that it is a vanilla game except all the town has a tell. Like one person has to use the word misguided at least twice a turn. Another person every 2nd post has to comment on if he was scum how he would do things differently.

I think it would be fun because all the town would be searching for the tells of the other town, while the mafia attempts to blend in and make a tell of their own which the town would then try to trick them into saying it.

Does it sound fun to you guys?

My response is much the same as shark. Claiming doctor would be an interesting thing. If a scum member claimed doctor he'd probably be able to fool us to vote someone else. If their is a doctor in this game, coming out would make it so we could get to the next day without much trouble. He of course would likely die during the night but it would leave me and Remalle able to vote out the last guy. If the doctor stays hidden their is a chance of us mislynching him today but it would let him protect me and we might not be in lylo the following day.

I think its a safer bet to come out as we have a good chance of winning if he does
