For systems with more than three parties, take a look at Arrow's impossibility theorem. There are plenty of better alternatives, too -- even dropping all the ballots into a box and choosing one at random is 'better' than FPTP. Range voting and approval voting are much, much better and they completely eliminate vote-splitting. Mathematically, both have a significantly higher chance of electing an individual favored by the majority.
But I would rather vote for someone, then have a group of people tell me who to vote for...
