At the start of the game, I set my population cap at 35.

About a year later, I reach 38; thinking that was the final migration wave. But lo and behold, next season, another wave comes. And then again the next season. And then AGAIN. What's going on here? Why isn't the pop cap taking effect? I'm looking at the d_init.txt at this very moment. [POPULATION_CAP:35]

I've heard that the liason needs to have their meeting before it works. Well, they've met twice so far. In the first year and then again in this year.

I'm also having trouble withmy military. They don't seem to equip certain items. They'll be walking around, some with helmets, but no breastplate. Some with boots and chainmail, but no greaves or helmets. The stockpiles are practically overflowing with armour, so there's no shortage. I've tried forbidding and unforbidding unused items. I've put the uniform settings to replace clothing instead of over clothing.

What the hell.

Well, one of my migrants was a child who, according to her page, was 15 years old.

I immediately labelled her as a vampire and burrowed her in an empty room. But after a season, she got thirsty. I was stumped upon this and I checked the RAWs to see if my memory of growing up was false.

But no, my (savefile) RAWs still stated that after someone turns 12, they're an adult.

Is this supposed to happen? I should probably have searched for it.

I've got a quick question about many of the gigantic animals around my embarks.

In their descriptions, they are regarded as gigantic animals capable of defending themselves. The elephants with their tusks, hippoes that are deadly and aggressive when disturbed.

I tried sending my little militia captain to take on a massive herd of elephants. He was armed with simple clothes and a copper short sword. I was expecting him to get critically injured, but the elephants didn't even attempt to defend themselves, they ran and ran. Even when they got cornered, they just ran past Urist McMilitia, allowing him to happily slash their legs and body.

After that laughably easy task, I got curious and sent him into a herd of nearby hippoes, bathing in the stream. Same story, they ran. Urist McElephantDundee managed to kill a hippo before the rest ran off over the stream to the other side and just sat there, afraid to go anywhere.

What is this. I don't even.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Is there a better tag I can use than [PRONE_TO_RAGE:1]? It has the unpleasant side-effect of making them run after my dwarves that just happen to pass them 15 tiles away.

DF Gameplay Questions / Farming on underground soil
« on: June 18, 2011, 05:43:20 am »
Look at the title and then back to me. I said soil, not stone.

According to the Magma wiki and pretty much everyone else, you can make functioning farm plots without muddying them by making the plots in soil.
This isn't working for me. I usually don't care, since I rarely stay in the soil layers for long, but I just want to clear the whole thing up. I tried placing farm plots on a soil layer, but my grower didn't do his job, despite being on a "No Job" status.

I enabled Grower for every one of my dwarves, but they didn't plant the seeds. They do "construct" the farm plots, but they did not plant anything I select. So then I made the whole floodgate-mechanism schabang (Also buckets, at some occasions) and muddied the place. I rebuilt the farm plot and there they go, planting plump helmets to their hearts content.

What.

The soil types I can remember trying this on were Loam and Clay.

The only thing I have changed in the raws are removing the Aquifers. Is this the cause?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Still no mayor?
« on: February 11, 2011, 09:25:22 am »
According to the wiki, when your population goes above 50, the Expedition Leader turns into a Mayor. My current population is 73 dwarves, yet he still an Expedition Leader.

I have yet to receive a baron or any noble at all, in fact. I have a created wealth of 677K, Exported 15K and Imported 75K.

Someone care enough to help?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Party hard!
« on: February 02, 2011, 12:51:19 pm »
I just had two ambushes SIMULTANIOUSLY from two directions. A fairly new fortress with only 41 population (And for some reason, an imported wealth of nearly 60K, can someone explain why? I haven't deconstructed any trade depot, and there were no traders on the site. Only artifact I have (Checked through the l) is a wooden mug encircled with more wood.)

None the less, after losing 4/5ths of my population, the invaders left and my miner decides to throw a party among the blood and the twenty corpses that laid scattered in the dining hall.

DF Gameplay Questions / Miner refuses to dig
« on: January 26, 2011, 12:11:08 pm »
My miner (who is also my expedition leader and broker) refuses to dig. I've tried searching and got about 5,000 irrelevant results.

Any way to fix this? He has no other labour enabled other than Mining. I've tried disabling-enabling and even stripping him of his broker profession.
It's like he's practising to become a noble in the future...

DF Gameplay Questions / Quick Question : Do Goblin prisoners need food?
« on: January 17, 2011, 04:32:10 pm »
Title says it all. Does caged Goblins need to eat?

Alternatively, do Humans and Elves also have to eat?

DF Modding / Disabling clothes rotting?
« on: January 04, 2011, 04:43:01 am »
As clothes can rot, I've read that Dwarves will not put on new clothes when their originals has worn out, permanently running around naked.

Is there a fix you can mod for this? Perhaps making clothes never wear out?

Edit : Did some more searching, seems a lot of people ask this question.
Disregard this, I suck socks.

DF General Discussion / FPS suffering
« on: December 27, 2010, 08:56:31 pm »
I guess I'm too used of playing at a about 100 FPS, but recently, after my second-year spring migrant wave, my FPS has dropped from 95-80 down to 60.

My total population stands at 85 (Including animals). Is this normal? Do please take note that I run a Quad Core with 3.4 GHz and two 4GB Kingston RAM. I've set Dwarf Fortress to run at Realtime. I have also set the Normal Pathing cost to 1 with no difference.
My current fortress has a stream and a few hills. The main fortress has a decent size with mostly 3-tile wide corridors. I have not broken into the first cavern.

Another thing to note is that the Graphics FPS refresh limit thingymabob is set to 20.

The game occasionally freezes for a few seconds when I'm playing, they come at complete random, which I find strange. Does anyone have a cause and solution?

halp me to answer these many questions.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Corpse fell into water. Forever there to rot
« on: December 20, 2010, 02:47:47 pm »
Well, disaster struck. Because I am STUPID to not realize how stupid my dwarves were. After channeling out in the wrong order, causing a collapse, one of my two miners died. It was a great tragedy, really, because now I only have one miner until I get my first caravan.

None the less, my surviving miner has been quite sad lately because of this, so I need to bury the dead miner so he won't come back to haunt me. Only problem is that when it collapsed, the shockwave sent the corpse into the nearby river and everyone is refusing to get him.
There's a ramp right next to the body, but no one wishes to path there to grab him.

So now he is forever rotting, bringing every dwarf a bad thought.

I guess I could make a Slab, but then the body would still be there to decay, causing ANOTHER bad thought.

I'm currently playing on a Warm embark, so the stream won't freeze, I believe.

What to do?!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Untamed Wilds my ass/donkey
« on: December 18, 2010, 08:33:10 pm »
I settled in a "Temperate Coniferous Forest". Lots of trees, lots of vegetation with the savagery set as Untamed Wilds, hoping that I would meet the mighty Grizzly Bears that I could trap and train as my own.

Instead I got Deer and Foxes.
That's Untamed Wilds? I was expecting predators in every corner!

There were no overlapping biomes at all, just the above. 4x4 Embark site.

Been playing for a full year. It's spring.
Nothing more than Deer. I feel the disappointment creeping up on me.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Attributes and stats?
« on: December 07, 2010, 09:30:03 pm »
I keep reading about dwarves that become "Ultra-Mighty, Inexhaustible and Super-dwarven strength" after many years of work. Was this the old 40d version?

The only actual attributes I've seen is with my two Legendary Miners, who both have the Near Inexhaustible. (or similar) I'd imagine a miner growing some toughness or strength, but nope. Just improving the blood and oxygen circulation, I guess.

Discuss?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / A thief has stolen a Steel Helm!
« on: December 06, 2010, 08:27:47 am »
Except it's Summer, first year. I haven't met my first caravan yet and I never packed anything Steel when I embarked.

So where the hell did the thief find that?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Legendary Marksdwarf already?
« on: December 02, 2010, 09:24:54 am »
I set one of my Embark dwarves to go hunting.

It's the end of the first year and he's gone all the way up to smokin' Legendary. (He started at Level 3 - Competent) Good grief. My butcher who's been taking care of all his kills hasn't even gone beyond Novice.

Another thing to note is that I embarked on a Sand Desert with scarce trees. I noticed that some Giant Desert Scoprions was on the edge of my map. I checked the Magmawiki and it stated that they are about as lethal as the Giant Cave Spider. That they are merciless predators that do not feel pain, that do not stop.

But...
.. They're running away from my Hunter. He can stand 2-3 tiles away, they'll just run away instead of snapping my dwarf in half.

wat.
