DF Gameplay Questions / What's most important in a shield?

I'd heard it's quality of material, but I'd also heard it was based on the weight of the shield. I checked the wiki and it doesn't really provide any information on that matter. Can anyone help me out?

DF Modding / How do you add words to last name generation?

I'm attempting to make a custom build adventurer, but he needs the name to go with it. His name shall be Max Fightmaster, but only if I can add in words to last name generation, which I do not know how to do. Any help would be appreciated.
