DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Non-artifact artifact
« on: August 28, 2010, 09:35:47 pm »
Have you ever had your dwarves somehow create something so amazing it made you think it was an artifact, only to realize they did it out of normal effort?

I was just trading my stuff to a caravan when I found one of my finished goods bins had an extremely high value. I checked inside, and found:

Quote
large green glass gem
Base Value: 9040
Total Value: 24668

This is a masterful large green glass gem created by Cilob Udarcilob. It is encrusted with superior quality milk opal, superior quality pipe opal and exceptionally worked black zircon and masterfully worked yellow grossular by Zas Tarondeler. This object is adorned with hanging rings of exceptionally worked turquoise and menaces with spikes of masterfully worked red grossular by Zas Tarondeler.
On the item is an exceptionally designed image of Zasit Hammerslapped the dwarf and dwarves in brown zircon by Zas Tarondeler. Zasit Hammerslapped is surrounded by the dwarves. The artwork relates to the appointment of the dwarf Zasit Hammerslapped to the position of broker of the Searing Lash in the late summer of 1051.

I shed a single tear, slapped myself for nearly trading this away, and I'm currently building a shrine to honor it.

Seriously. It's a piece of glass with the most noble moment of my fortress engraved for all eternity. It was made by my jewelery team for absolutely no reason other to do it. And it's worth a metric shitton.

(itt astounding items that weren't artifacts)

Stegthoram "The Organized World"
This is a cat bone earring. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.

Ingredients: cat bones, mule bones, cat leather, ash log, rough topazidines or something.

Valued at ☼1200.

Never before have I felt that I wasted a cat.

Set it loose on elven forums.

Make it a barrel troll.

Throw it in magma I don't know >:I

Off the top of my head:

-If you can be bothered to set up a hospital, you can use it to save dorfs with injuries. It doesn't always work, but it's better than retiring your legendary hammerdwarf due to a broken eyeball or something.

-Military is totally revamped, but once you relearn it it isn't too bad.

-Caverns: 3 cavern "layers". Each has progressively worse creatures. On occasion a Forgotten Beast arrives, which is just a randomly-created monster. You might get a giant fluffy iguana, or a crab made out of vomit or whatever. If you're really unlucky you get something made out of metal. Also, underground trees grow in caverns, and every cavern tile is automatically muddy.

-Farming requires irrigation on any underground tile, no matter the type.

-The magma sea. At the near-bottom of the map is an endless sea of magma, and below that, a layer or two of semi-molten rock. The only way to get through the sea is bluemetal pipes. Every map has magma seas, so magma isn't really a problem anymore. Semi-molten rock is harmless but invincible.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Questions about a pump stack
« on: August 24, 2010, 02:05:59 pm »
So hey, what could be worse than punching a hole in another cavern with the pump stack? Punching two holes in the cavern from the top and bottom simultaneously!

All right, I can deploy some building teams down there relatively quickly compared to the average time it takes for cavern creatures to start wrecking my shit, but is there anything from a cavern that can smash through constructed walls?
Nope.  Nothing at all can destroy a wall that is constructed.  It's treated the same as a wall that is natural rock that has been dug out.  Note that this even applies to things like wood walls, glass walls, gypsum walls, and other things that sound like they'd be fragile or flammable.  The only thing that can take out a construction is the "remove construction" designation.  Only dwarves have that power.

Actually, I'm not sure about constructions made of ice.  I've never tried that.

You can build ice fortresses inside volcanic calderas.

I think when dwarves build walls, they mix some of their beard hair into it, making it indestructible to all but the mightiest of dwarven beards.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Military training pays off, apparently.
« on: August 23, 2010, 07:39:00 pm »
So, a year and a half in, I get three gobbo ambushes, all hammers. No problem, I'll just send out Colonel Sanders' Super Kickass Axe Squad!

Everybody dies.

So my dorfs are running around getting slaughtered and laughing at the goblins falling into the cage traps, when I notice a single dwarf still fighting the goblins.

This, my friends, is why Armok invented military training.

As of this post: the three goblins are over-exerted, Udib is unconscious, and the rest of my fort is trying to get her axe.

It's been about 4 and a half minutes, unpaused.

I kinda feel bad for her.

Here, have a diagram:

This should explain the wall issues. Dwarf A claims Rock B, which is blocking Dwarf B who's rock is in the way of Dwarf C, who can't get his until Dwarf B gets his which he can't do because Dwarf A is a lazy ass.

It's the dwarven equivalent of a traffic jam.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Embarking near Magma
« on: August 23, 2010, 01:58:46 pm »
I'm pretty sure a volcano is just a big magma pipe that sticks out of the ground.

You'd have to embark on top of a volcano to actually tap into it, I think.

My other question is, if I dig a tunnel into a section of the magma sea that is beneath the surface, will it continue to fill that tunnel to 7/7 indefinitely?

From the side, it would look like this.

I've punched holes over the magma sea plenty of times. It shouldn't surge upwards, since I don't think a limitless sea can be pressurized...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Problems with Goblin Grinder
« on: August 22, 2010, 09:53:20 pm »
The first is that, ocassionally, a goblin can actually outrun the bridge and make it across.  Not a huge deal, you have to have a LITTLE fun, right?

The second, bigger issue is that my dwarves (and traders) are often killed when a goblin lingers on the plate, causing me/them casualties but not teh gooblinz.

Thirdly, it seems to go off for no discernable reason sometimes, usually when traders are in town.  Although this may be related to the next issue...

Fourthly, kobolds will get across, then get chased across the bridge and trigger it on the way out, dumping my milidwarves in the process.

As a side note, I discovered that if you use the bridge as a garbage dump, when it retracts, it launches rocks EVERYWHERE, causing significant damage to a squad of very unfortunate, misguided goblins.

Try building walls to make a small "funnel", forcing creatures to walk through a 3 tile wide space, and sticking dogs on chains on it. On one hand, they'll probably die to gobbo sieges, and you won't get to experience the fun of chasing around thieves, but on the bright side it should stop gobbo ambushers from setting it off, plus having dogs at an entrance is never really a bad idea.

Of course, it depends on your design too.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Hardcore Babies: Dwarven Edition
« on: August 21, 2010, 09:08:04 am »
I swear to god, babies are hardcore.

My woodworker randomly crapped out a baby while making cages. The baby, immediately after being born, took off. The mother followed it only for it to make a U-turn, throwing her off. It then ran down 30 flights of stairs to the metal workshops and climbed into the magma forge before the mother caught up and extracted it.

The baby attempted to jump in magma. Hardcore.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Stairs VS Ramps
« on: August 19, 2010, 08:54:05 pm »
Something that's seriously bugging me. Title says it all, really: stairs vs ramps in terms of entranceways, paths and other such things.

What I've got so far:

STAIRS:
+ No caveins.
+ No chance of miners trapping themselves.
+ Slightly more space-efficient.

RAMPS:
+ Allow passage of caravans (?)
+ Smoother travel.
+ Natural and dwarfy.
+ Easily removed in emergencies.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: So many goals.... SO MANY GOALS!!!
« on: August 19, 2010, 07:42:23 pm »
*sigh* game just crashed right as I was about to save because I had gotten a lot of stuff done, including starting on making private bedrooms (including for my new book-keeper), expanding my warehouse, and making a few basic weapons to go with my leather armor I crafted from killing about 30 kittens and hunting Hoary Marmots. . . don't judge me.  Oh and I had expanded my warehouse a great deal and left in supports to keep it from caving-in, basically, 2 seasons worth of work, down the shitter.  Oh well, such is life I suppose.

I do have another question though, in the meantime while I try to get everything all set up, what can I do with all this stone, I'm drowning in stone and I have nothing to do with it other than turn it into blocks and crafts, is there anything else I can do with it... it's getting ridiculous how overly crowded my base is with stone.

I'm OCD, so I know it's hard, but you just have to suck it up. Stone is going to be everywhere, on every floor, in every room, everywhere. That's just the dwarven way.

If you want to make use of it, your best bet is to create a custom stockpile that only takes valuable stones and put it near your craftsdwarf shop, and do the same for ores and your metalworkers. BUT. If you designate any sort of stockpile, expect the entire fortress to slow down as your dwarves spend their precious time hauling useless rock.

Once you have a metric crapton of idle dwarves, though, you can work on a mass cleanup project by either:

a) building floors everywhere. One floor tile needs one stone, meaning you're burning up all the useless stone.
b) designating a 1x1 activity zone, setting it to be a garbage dump, using the stocks menu to dump every useless stone you have on that single tile, building a drawbridge over it, and atom smashing it.
c) assign a hilarious amount of craftdwarves and set them all to mass production using whatever stone's lying around.

DF General Discussion / Re: PRINT_MODE poll
« on: August 19, 2010, 07:32:17 pm »
First thing I thought of from the title was a petition to include printer compatibility.

Dwarf Fortress IRL: Every frame printed off your printer* in real time! *multiple printers required

In all seriousness, though, I've never actually bothered with it. I mean, I don't even know what half of them do, although I'd be disappointed if there weren't at least two that involved magma floods.
