You can carve constructed walls.

I might use wooden grates and think of it like a nice lattice-work.

If that's reproducible, that would make for a solid bug report.  I don't imagine that's the intent.

I think you misunderstood.  The GDC talk was on the 14th.

I don't have any science to contribute, but I do have an anecdote from 40.24.  I'm playing a 40.24 fortress at the moment, and I decided that I'd train up macedwarves because I never had before.

My combat logs generally end in a pile of goblins with pulped hands, legs, heads, or torsos.  I can't speak to how they might compare to hammerdwarves against the same targets, but I'm pretty pleased with them so far.

Very nice.  I've wanted for something like this but haven't gotten around to doing it myself.  Thank you!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Regarding burrow
« on: February 05, 2016, 03:01:26 pm »
If a bolthole as previously described on the wiki was part of the civilian alert burrow but disconnected from, say, the "Inside" burrow which encompasses most of the fortress, would the dwarf go to the bolthole instead of running all the way back to the other burrow?

Or, more generally, do dwarves select the closest matching burrow for a civilian alert?  I can't test just now, but if I get a chance before someone answers, I will.

I have a sneaking suspicion that's what the author had meant but didn't quite capture it correctly.

You can actually form a band and go from town to town trying to get famous.

"We're on a mission from Armok."

In the old (and maybe current, I'm not sure) recordings there was one I couldn't understand.  Maybe it was also in the dwarven language.  It was used during tantrums, I think.  It was a male dwarf shouting: "I'm gonna turn you into - - !"

The "- -" are the two words I don't understand.  Any hints?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Mass burrow assigning
« on: September 02, 2014, 02:19:18 pm »
You don't need to assign them individually to burrows for that.

In the military screen are alerts.  You can associate zero or more burrows to an alert.

There's a "Civilian Alert" status, which will be indicated by [Civ] next to one of the alerts.  All civilians are restricted to the burrows associated with that alert status.  You don't have to assign them to particular burrows, unless you're trying to restrict motion when the current civilian alert has no burrows associated with it.  At a minimum, a single "Inside" burrow should work for what you're trying to accomplish.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Climbing and Fortifications
« on: July 21, 2014, 10:24:00 am »
There are two types of fortifications, constructed and carved.

When you say they can't climb fortifications, does that apply to just constructed fortifications, or can you carve fortifications into a wall to prevent climbing as well?  I haven't tried either yet, so I'm curious.

Perhaps STAY_ALIVE is the default, since it is the de facto motive of all living beings?

Maybe.  Though I'd think it might drive caution and cowardice instead, and be the opposite of some new deathwish-like tag such as DIE_IN_BATTLE.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: pros/cons of dead civs

The pro, though, is that you're forced to play with your dwarves as not being expendable.  Each death has serious consequences.  I've played this scenario before and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I'd love to find one with a hill smack in the middle, but can never seen to find one.

If anyone has a secret for finding or generating this sort of formation more frequently, I'd like to know about it.  Every embark I hope that this will be the one where I've got a natural setup for a good motte-and-bailey style castle.  I never land near a sizable hill in the center of the map.

One day, I hope to be able to move dirt from the ditch and build the hill myself.  Feels strange to do it in stone, but I'm not above it.

I like taigas near the foothills of mountains.  Preferably in a region with a river or stream that thaws for part of the year.
