When several units are chasing one around Benny Hill style.  Doubly so when it's Urist McHauler out-pacing a group of goblins.

I should just keep the music on hand to play while I watch.

DF Suggestions / Re: Down with ramp channeling
« on: October 17, 2010, 05:19:22 pm »
Actually, I like the new channels better. What we need is a way to destroy down ramps from the upper level (in addition to the current destroy up ramps tool).

Seems like the essence of the problem to me.

One way might be to allow for a trigger to be attached to a constructed ramp.  When triggered it could either collapse the ramp into nothingness like a support, or allow for it to move up and down like a flood gate.

By replacing one natural ramp along a trench with a constructed ramp and hooking it up to a trigger, you could safely remove all the remaining natural ramps, let the miner escape, then rid yourself of the final constructed ramp.

It would require more time and effort to set up, and probably would work poorly for 1x1 pits, but it would be a start.  There might be some other uses for ramps that can be made to appear and disappear by trigger.  Mechanically, it seems about as technologically advanced as a flood gate.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Iron vs Bronze vs Steel (and a history lesson)

Source: Nobody has ever said iron is better, and plenty have said it's worse.

Someone has.  The wiki page for armor currently suggests that iron and bronze have recently flip-flopped on the scale of desirability.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: year?

Have your dwarves do a lot of engravings.  Eventually, they'll do one that depicts the founding of your fortress.  That engraving will give you the year of the founding.

It's not the easiest way, but it's potentially something you'd do anyway.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Where do fish come from?
« on: September 09, 2010, 03:11:52 pm »
You can overfish and end up with empty water.

I always seem to do this.  Not sure what the remedy might be, though, other than to not fish or only let dabbling fishers near the water.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Movie recording problems

I don't have any solutions, but I too am having no luck recording movies.

Looks like a bug has been reported for it, though: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=2489

DF Suggestions / Re: Additional Mechanics/Traps Wishlist
« on: August 13, 2010, 05:20:40 pm »
I'd like to see some form of caltrops added.  Sorry if they've been mentioned before, but searching for the word caltrop hasn't turned up a suggestion for them in the forums or in the ESV list.

They might work best as speed modifiers.  Enemy and perhaps friendly units could choose to pass through them slowly and remain largely uninjured.  Non-flying units passing through them carelessly would be wounded appropriately.

I would like to see the caltrops impede both hostile and friendly troops, personally.  It would also be nice if they could be deployed on-the-fly as well as in advance.  One might, for example, deploy the caltrops by activating a trigger connected to hatches in the floor above the tunnel.  The caltrops would fall into the tunnel, scatter, become deployed, and then after their purpose is served collected and returned to where they're out of the way for normal traffic.  The invading force could also take the time to clear the area of the caltrops.

This would almost certainly require a whole host of new game mechanics, but it seems to me a suitably fun addition.

To the Order of the Masons:

Would the stone worker who undertook the job to carve fortifications into the warm stone wall please return to the job site to reclaim your lips.

In the future, all stone workers are to refrain from kissing fortifications, especially when magma is about to flow through them.
