DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Hiding miasma?
« on: August 13, 2010, 09:53:01 pm »
Or once you have a chance, you can use grates and vents to make the worst parts outdoors.
You can, but it's kind of a pain to do so.  Especially if you're trying to keep track of moving targets like goblin invaders.  It also stops the game while you're scanning around with the cursor.

DF Gameplay Questions / "complained about the draft"
« on: August 13, 2010, 01:39:07 am »
What does it mean when I look at a dwarf's thoughts and see that he's complained about the draft lately?  Is he talking about a draft like a cold breeze through the fort?  Or is he upset about being in the military?  In either case what can I do to make him happier?  He's just been steadily getting more and more unhappy.  I'm worried he's going to throw a tantrum or something.

In the middle of a siege? are you crazy?

Hehe, it's cool.  I have both a refuse stockpile and garbage dump inside my fortress.  I just seal my fortress shut and kill or cage everything hostile inside.  After a little cleanup I pull all the civilians back and let some more goblins into the meat grinder.  Technically flying invaders could get into my internal refuse stockpile from outside, but so far it hasn't been an issue.

That's disappointing.   :(  I don't suppose it can be made partially transparent or anything?  It makes it so hard to tell what's going on in there.

Somewhat unrelated, but is there a way to make dwarves prioritize throwing out miasma generating body parts above other types of trash or other tasks?

DF Gameplay Questions / Friendly fire with marksdwarves?
« on: August 11, 2010, 09:51:44 pm »
So I've only just started using marksdwarves and I was wondering if friendly fire is possible and likely.  So far I've had my melee dwarves run at goblins while my marksdwarves are firing at them without incident and I'm worried that maybe I've just been lucky so far.  Am I likely to have my marksdwarves miss and injure my hammerdwarves if I let them engage the same targets?

DF Gameplay Questions / Hiding miasma?

Is there a way to turn off the display of miasma temporarily?  I have a big ass siege going on and I'm letting the goblins come in maybe a dozen at a time by raising and lowering the bridge to my fortress.  I'm trying to determine when is the best time to send my soldiers into the trap hallway to mop up survivors, but I can't see anything but purple left over from the previous wave.  Is it possible to turn it off so I can easily tell how many goblins are left in the hallway?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Limited outside garbage collection?

Yeah the burrow/alert thing sounds like the way to do it.

Set a refuse stockpile and don't dump, but rather reclaim the garbage left in the fort.

They won't move any of it to the refuse stockpile(or garbage dump) until outside garbage collection is turned on.

I tried using Dump.  Doesn't work  :(  They won't actually go dump it unless outside garbage collection is on.  I'll have to do the burrow thing.  Should I just make an alert with that burrow assigned to it or is there a fast way to assign and unassign everybody to a burrow quickly?

DF Gameplay Questions / Limited outside garbage collection?
« on: August 10, 2010, 09:13:29 pm »
Is there a way to have limited outside garbage collection?  I don't want to enable outside garbage collection and have my dwarves go half way across the map to grab a butterfly corpse a cat killed and then be murdered by a goblin ambush.  In particular I'd like to clear out an area that's inside my fortress but has no ceiling.  Is there any way to do that without just sealing everybody in the fortress and enabling global outside garbage collection?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Display cases?

Still, it doesn't add to the fortress wealth the way buildable artifacts do. Display case mod, on the other hand does just that, which can boost a room's value appropriately. It does not generate positive thoughts from admiring, though.

Ah, bummer.  At this point I was more concerned with getting some extra happy thoughts than increasing my fortress wealth statistic.  I'll have to use that display case mod for my next fort.

DF Gameplay Questions / Display cases?

Is there some way to build a display case or display stand so I can put my random artifacts to good use?  I'd love to be able to put an artifact crown on display in my dining hall, or maybe put an artifact mitten on display in a noble's room.  Is there anyway to do this?  Or is it only possible with buildable artifacts like cabinets?

It was tasked by a hauler (not by your Moody Dwarf), and stockpiled.
Aha!  That makes sense.

Since it's presumably not a hostile creature, couldn't he skip the lever building step?  Couldn't he just 'q'uery the cage after it's been built and un-assign the dwarf?

Aha!  That was it.  I slaughtered a mule and he went right back to gathering materials.  He ended up making a pig iron piccolo; studded with pig iron; decorated with cow bone and giant cave spider silk; encircled with mule bone, pig tail fiber, and diorite; and menacing with spikes of topazolite.  The item has an image of a five pointed start on it.  It's called "Cogtomus Bootshoves".  I checked the forge after he finished and the steel helm is gone.  I don't know what happened to it.

So if the pig iron was actually the first item, he could have grabbed that, then a topazolite, then the bull bone, then another topazolite, then get stuck waiting for more bones.  Does that sound right?  It didn't occur to me that items he already had might still show up in the list.
